Nga mihi ki a koe. Thank you for refreshing my memory. We had a 5 weekend beginners weaving classes at our local marae 8yrs ago making place mats using that method and making kete. Thanks.
I found this while trying to learn to weave cattails in the States, and I'm so, so, so grateful to have found you! Some of the best and most detailed tutorials on the web. You've really opened up worlds and saved me hours of frustration. I can't thank you enough! Keep it up!
I am glad I could be of help to you! I do use cattail as well every so often and its very similar material indeed. I do have even more tutorials on my website (ad free but paying subscription) but they are mostly aimed at NZ-based weavers and cover all sorts of projects from hats to wall art.
If by catstail do you mean what we call Raupo here? It has a brown stalk flower. I've been able to weave it but it dries out and falls apart or do you cure it first? thanks
Hi there I came across your channel a coupoe of days ago as I have a plethora of flax growing in my yard and nearby and it seems silly not to learn how to use it and then teach my children hoe it can be used to make such beautiful everyday items and decor. Thank you so much for your content! I'm having a lot of fun making homewares and gaining such valuable knowledge. Love it!!!
Kia Ora Rosemarie, thank you. That depends a lot on the season and the weather. I prepare it and boil it usually and then just hang it in the sun with a bit of wind to dry them quicker and then they just dry... ready to store for years.. I have put up a video here on how to prepare harakeke so you may want to check that one out.
@@nataliaparrado1540 that is totally up to you whatever suits your usual preparation anything will go but the general rule is the bigger the mat the longer the whenu will have to be and the wider you make them the longer they will have to be. I just split them with my thumb so they are on average about 1-1.3cm in the normal range or half that for smaller width items and wider for other things.
Oh yes, thanks for reply. I'm wanting to make packs 1) 4 Cup placemat x 1 fruit bowl placemat 2) 1 small Vase and flower Is it possible to create 1 pack of each in couple of hours for experienced weavers?
@@jt9564 it really depends... like so many other things in life. One person is good at something and another is not. Experience comes in a lot of ways and even though I consider myself to be experienced in some areas I would struggle in others so I cant really answer that question I am sorry. I really do not know.
Thank you Mam it is very helpful, if someone wants to weave a bigger size means 12 feet square what if not by leaf but with plastic lace of some kind could you give me a hint of the length of a lace. ❤️ To hear if you reply if you still there please 🙏👍
I think this was my "normal" width in this instance (around 1.2cm), but it really does not matter as this was meant to demonstrate the technique of turning the sides rather than making a particular sized item:-)
try Ali Browns Book - Weaving a Large Container from NZ Flax (purchase on her website directly). I dont have that much space for any Waikawa here at home (or rather space to make one). I am not sure if Veranora Hetet has one of those classes on her Paying website so you may want to check those out too. Sorry about that.
Apologies, it is for experienced weavers only and the finish is quite special. However, have a look at this step by step video at the end it will show the finish as well. Same here! I’m just beginning to learn weaving and there’s not much out there on weaving with cattails. These videos are wonderful.

Thank you. This is the part i keep forgetting.
Thanks a lot . 😊
Thank you! How many mm are you using for your whenu on this mat?
I think I mention it in the video - I forgot but I think its 40
Oh sorry i was taking about the width of your whenu, about 1 cm, or 1,5 cm?

Thank you, and sorry for all the silly questions :)
This is really helpful thanks❤
Hi
Tautoko to you, how long roughly will it take to make 1 cup placemat?
Kia Ora, I dont know, that depends on your skill and the width of your whenu

oh, I don't know actually, I don't think I have ever woven anything that big before so I think you would have to try and find out. Apologies!
@@Flaxworx Thank you Mam❤️👍
@@pkshiing4415 It would be easier to weave smaller sections together and then tie or weave the pieces together. Kind of like quilting.
