Heavy Duty Bike Repair Stand / Lift Crane

  • Working on cargo bikes can be kind of a pain - normal bike work stands aren't designed for the size and weight, and the height adjustment is usually a pain to use and requires manually lifting the entire weight of the bike. The cheap ones are flimsy and wobbly. The holding clamps slip, and the feet are always in the way.
    So I decided to make a heavy-duty work stand that won't tip over, won't wobble, is strong enough to hold up 50kg+ Bikes, is still movable with the bike attached, doesn't use much floor space and most importantly, doesn't require you to lift the bike up. It also goes up to a height of over 2 Meters.
    The crane mechanism can be operated in two gears, quick for regular (light bikes) or with a low gear for heavy lifting. I can also motorize it with a powerdrill.

    Hey Everyone, guess this is the first time I actually adress my viewers ;)
    First of all, Thanks for 10.000 Subs. Didn't expect this to take off like that but that's awesome.
    Secondly, it would be cool to hear some opinions on whether I should add voiceovers/more explanation for more complex builds like this, or stick with just showing the work and keep it snappy.
    Either way, more videos are on the way. Stay tuned!

      Congrats on the 10K subs! I actually just subscribed to you within the last month. I would love to hear voice over for complex builds like this. I like your videos regardless but I think explanation would only add to it. Keep up the amazing work!

    Oh man what a piece of work ! , you have all the toys, your machine work, beautiful welds on real steel, and wheels, (more steel), gears?, oh wait, needed lower gears, probably for the optional clamp for Jacob's motorcycle !..You sure make that look easy, like one day when you were about 9 your dad said , " son, I wanna show you something out in my shop".....

    Hi Phil. Re' whether to voice over or not? I think 80% no - a video is more universal that way; so long as there is enough info text on screen (or maybe in the description) to cover the project. And 20% yes - because I think the viewer gets a better understanding of the video maker, PLUS, you can add spoken comments that might be forgotten in text.
    NOT saying that YOU did this, but I feel that once a given hole is drilled/a flat is milled/a fillet is welded/etc., the viewer doesn't need to see all the other 10, 12, 20 repeats, so speeded up footage is marvellous there.
    Time lapse can also work well for extended duration projects.
    Either way, I'll certainly keep watching having just come across your channel (looking for 'windscreen motor chain hoist drive'), and binge watching maybe 8 of your back catalogue, PLUS I just subscribed.
    I also think that a list of items and maybe sources would be great, and, you might want to consider the 'affiliate links' possibility.
    Regards Mark in the UK

      It's funny you mention that because I'm actually planning a new version of this lift that will do exactly that! It will also be much beefier and able to lift more weight. Probably not enough to lift a car ;) But enough to lift very heavy bikes, or myself, hopefully

      I'm actually 90% sure I will revisit this build in the foreseeable future and build a better version. It's not that I'm unhappy with it, but I can think of so many things to improve. One thing is what you said, I want to somehow make a stand that takes up less space in front of it. I might also motorize the lifting...

    I throughly enjoyed all parts of this video! From the design and execution of the stand to the video editing and sound effects. Very well done! Even without your voice I understood everything you were doing. Are you going to paint or clear coat it? It looks to me the only area of play is the main carriage on the vertical pole. Maybe a locking lever once you reach your desired height would take care of it. That is if there is any movement there. I'm sure you spent as much time on the editing then on the stand itself, if not more.

    • @PhilVandelay
      @PhilVandelay  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I probably won't paint or clear coat it because there's so many parts that slide over each other, it would induce friction and just scrape off after a while. It would look cool with some color on it though. I find a good coat of WD-40 every now and then is enough to keep stuff like this relatively rust free indoors and the round tubing is actually stainless. As for play, actually the most wobbly part is probably the wheels, even locked they move a little bit. But that's fine as long as everything stays in place and doesn't slide down by itself like the old one...

    • @RobertSeviour1
      @RobertSeviour1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A really solid lock for the base' castor wheels would also help towards stability.

    • @6980869
      @6980869 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those happen to look like the exact casters that i own, using a dual locking mechanism, that stops the rotation of the wheels, in addition to stopping them from swiveling as well. For his sake, I sure hope i'm right about that, am in total agreeance w/u on that sentiment.

      @PhilVandelay  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they are locking casters that lock in all directions. But every caster I've tried so far, even the large industrial ones always had some amount of play in them. It's not that they start rolling when you don't want them to, but the stiffness of the caster itself that usually results in some amount of wobble. If I had the option (and more shop space) I'd probably just bolt this thing to the ground somewhere ;)
