First, you totally got the song first time, HalfLifeSistah. Kudos for being open to what the song had to give, and I hope you never lose that ability to connect with a song so powerfully. Wolf, so big of you to add that edit, and mad respect for that. Truly, that's a rare and precious thing, being able to do that. Jinjer is a band that will continue to surprise you. They are incredible, studio or concerts.
As mentioned in a comment I replied to below, the Resurrection Fest 2018 full concert is up and includes a true live version of this, and other songs. But do listen to studio versions and other suggested lives first, although that concert--of what I've heard--has the best sound and footage for a live version of I Speak Astronomy. And yes, Teacher, Teacher should be right up your alley--and mine--Wolf, particularly lyrically, as least I think so from the sound of it. I also recommend Perennial, highly. It's one of their lighter, less full on aggressive songs, even with growls. Although certainly not as light, in terms of growls, as Bad Water (no growls whatsoever). There really isn't a bad song, it's been said before, but it's true. Even their older stuff, including songs she inherited from their former vocalist back in the day. As an aside, I know some harp on Pisces for shock factor, and dismiss it after, but it really is a good song on its own, and that video was recorded with their new and current drummer, Vlad.
Also appreciate the excellent commentary at the end. The brain is an amazing, terrible thing. As is the universe. If you want to believe something, confirmation bias can and will kick in. That's why falsifiable evidence, credible peer review, and studies are so important. And while I don't have night terrors, that's some wild stuff, as I understand it.
Cheers, and all the best to you both.

Bravo on adding the edit. We all miss the boat occasionally. It is a good person who owns up to it and learns. We can only learn in two situations. 1) When we are wrong, 2) or when we are ignorant about something. :) Being wrong thus is a good thing... it is an opportunity to learn as long as we own it. You certainly did that. Mad respect.

Yes! I'm really green when it comes to metal, especially metal with the kind of deep scream singing Tatjana does - Jinjer was actually the first metal song I ever heard, where the scream singing didn't feel like it ruined the song for me. So it blew my mind twice, first, because that voice out of that small woman - second, because I didn't hate it, and I actually kinda loved it. Pisces, and Teacher Teacher are my two favourite songs I've heard from them.

I love you guys. Wolf's confession of awkwardness is what makes your chanel stand out. Sistah has a great gift of feeling the song as a whole by intuition (Myers-Briggs type NF probably?). I personally missed the song as much as you did, wolf, when I first heard it. The second time, it blew me away, and I pretty much owe this to sistahs face and body expression throughout the song. She could work as a translator for the deaf.
I agree with everything she said immediately after the song and with your edited opinion, wolf. Great song, great and very mature reaction! Universal blessings to both of you! 😘

I had the same experience with Jinjer when I first heard them, on first listen i was like "yeah they're ok, it just feels kinda disjointed" but when everytime I would listen a little bit closer and pick up new little things that made my jaw drop. Eugene is one of my favourite bassists working today, he always delivers something to blow my mind. but in all honesty every member of this band are crazy good, I think they just got finished recording a new album or are in the process of recording and I just genuinely can't wait.

I agree. The first time I heard "I Speak Astronomy" it was the live version from the Summer Breeze festival and I loved it however when I listened to the album version I was - I wouldn't say disappointed - just not as satisfied. The clean vocals were a bit "poppy" sounding however after a few listens I started to really like it. I think the vocal recording was "designed" to sound that way as a counterpoint to the harsh vocals and the vocals in the outro.
If I was to "react" to the album version first I would certainly not have appreciated it as much until until I'd listened to it a few times.

When asked in an interview at this last weekend's Download Festival, about the success of the Pisces video and how it helped launching their international career, Eugene said that in their opinion Pisces wasn't even close to being one the best songs of the King Of Everything album and that when they decided to make the live session video with Vlad, the new drummer, they had virtually no hopes that it would even be noticed. Fortunately for us (and for them), they were proved wrong. People can say whatever they want about that song but there's something so unexplicably right about it that it was destined to be a success. : )
This song isn't literally about astronomy. As in most Tatiana's lyrics, it's full of metaphors. It's basically her cry for help for not being able to find true love at her age (hence the 28 "light years" reference). It's sort of a sequel of Pisces, which talks about the same struggles.

On their website, they have some bass and drum tracks for songs and it is amazing. With some of the bass tracks, they have the tabs so you can see the notes he's playing and it blows my mind especially when he does the tapping. This band does blow me away. I think the more you listen to them you'll learn to love them more Wolf.
Jinjer reminds me of Faith No More (not musically really) in the way in one album their songs sound like different genres.
I really should listen to a whole video before I comment, but when I do later I think of things so I edit anyway. For one thing, I teeter between Agnostic and Athiest. I had two times that I could think maybe a ghost was around. One was when my cousin died, I was in his room looking at pictures on his wall and I felt something tap me on the shoulder when I turned around no one was there. Second, when my Grandfather passed away I was in my bed and I felt someone stroke my head. Now both of these could have been just mind play, I was thinking about them and I felt something similar to when some people watch a scary movie and after when the house is quiet they hear things. Another thought is the body has energy inside it and when you die that energy can only do one thing and that leaves your body and it sticks around for a short time before it dissipates. The thing that's wrong with that theory is the energy would stay in the place where the person died and not move to their house or a loved one's house. So I think it was just my mind playing tricks on me because it was within days of their passing and they were fresh in my mind and I was mourning because I missed them. When my cousin and grandfather passed away I was also young, since then other loved ones passed and I haven't had that feeling.

This is a very interesting reaction. Being myself a completely rational, atheist physicist I really appreciate the open mindness of Wolf. Really, keep on talking and commenting as much as you want, always a pleasure. And it's completely ok to change your mind on a song, either way... That's this authenticity and honnesty (both of you) that I love on this channel. Now, that reaction is really setting the stage for a brilliant session on TGSOE. I'd certainly find it interesting if that song in itself were to disappoint you... but your brains are obviously so prepared for the concept that I can't see this happening 😋. Keep it metal \m/

As I think that I stated previously, I always question anything paranormal. My counter argument for the other side of the ghost issue is that we do not understand the universe well enough to come any certain conclusions about the absolute nature of reality. That being said, science, and the tools that are made from it, are our only chance to achieve greater understanding.

I only discovered Jinjer this January, but, they quickly became my favorite band. In a metal scene that has grown incredibly stale & boring, shunning innovation, Jinjer's inventiveness, and, progressiveness is a much needed breath of fresh air. Of course, it's only helped by their incredible talent as players, and, by Tatiana's vocal, talent, and, her skill as a lyricist. She can write such beautiful, poetic, meaningful words, dealing with very serious subjects, all in a second language!

    • @ExUSSailor
      @ExUSSailor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I also have never been a huge fan of growls, and, distorted vocals, but, Tatiana has such an incredible range while growling, and, she seems to be able to enunciate more clearly than other vocalists who sing in that style.

Also, please check out their song, "Bad Water". Much more groove to it, an almost stoner rock vibe, a heavy Tool influence, and, only clean vocals from Tati.

Great, honest reactions from both of you! Jinjer has quickly become one of my favorite bands over the past few months. They just put it all together in such a unique way. From Tatiana's vocals and lyrics to the crazy riffs, bass lines, awesome drumming and wild time signature changes. Most of their newer songs take a few listens, because they way they structure the song is just so different. Their older stuff is more straightforward (but still awesome in it's own right). I agree with many of the comments below that Teacher, Teacher or Perennial would be great next videos to watch. Then try some of their live stuff next. This really is a special band, if you ask me. Nothing else out there like them.

I felt in love with Sistah's reaction since Nightwish' Ghost Love Score. Such an expresion and those emotions... I just can't help myself but falling in love with Sistah :D and Wolfkain is a suitable counterpart, always calm and rational. You two are just a great team, please keep up with the good work!!!
I have a small personal reaction request to you. There is an another Ukrainian band called Motanka, that resently signed a recording contract with Napalm Records (by now they released their debut album) and they sing in their mother language Ukrainian and English. Since they're new and they're singing some of their songs in Ukrainian there aren't many people who know them - even though it's very high quality music. Would you please react to Motanka - Verba, so more people would learn about this band?
Some explanations: "Verba" ("willow tree" in English) is a song about Holodomor and repressions from USSR towards Ukrainians (it's considered that something between 4 and 10 million people were killed by the Soviet regime, but true numbers are unknown since there is no statistics - or the true numbers are being kept in secret in Kremlin). For me this song is extremly emotional since I understand the language and know the true story behind the song so I almost cry every time when I listen to it - especially when I watch the official video.
Like I already mentioned, it is a selfish and personal request, but it would mean a lot to me if you would react to Motanka - Verba. If you won't make a reaction to this video, that would be fine with me too. It just seams to suit your range perfectly since you reacted to Jinger too.
Thanks in advance :) Wish you two all the best ;))))
P.S. Sorry if there are any mistakes - English isn't my first language

To be cliche, I'm a long time listener, first time caller. Wolf, you made the edit where you had to go back on your initial apathetic reaction to almost apologize, and I admire that and I paused to video to tell you my two cents:
I play bass, drums, and I have a background of rock and metal since I was born, and I got in to rap and hip-hop only a few years after that; I've been exposed to a huge array of music. And your wife is right about the drums and the bass. Their drummer is exceptional because of his feeling for the emotional aspect of the song and being able to apply an technique that cannot be easily replicated. The bassist, from what little I've heard, writes a lot of the music and clearly has an advanced understanding of music theory, and plays the FUNK out of that bass. He makes it look easy, I'm so jealous.
But to surmise, your wife was indeed right and she has a very deep feeling for music; you know this, that's what this channel seems to be about, right? Anyways, I love your channel, I love the both of you, and I love that both of you have open minds and are accepting of new ideas.

Your wife really does have an ear for music. I have sort of had this thought in some other videos, but thought maybe she was more so obliging the folks who requested the songs.
I find it funny that she is very in to progressive and power metal specifically because those are the same two subgenres that I started my metal journey with almost 2 decades ago (and still both in my top 3 subgenres).
