What was your "lightbulb" moment for this genre? This is a lesson a lot of folks have found helpful; it's about how not playing all the strings gives us better tone: th-cam.com/video/3p56mLNrR0s/w-d-xo.html
Inversions made a huge difference for me as well. It really helped unlock the fret board for me and made sense of the note that fit into the key without literally having to memorize every single note up and down the fret board by wrote memorization. Also, it really helps you to improvise when you have an understanding of inversions and how they help you fit into a mix.
I remember learning “Only King Forever” by Elevation towards the beginning of my worship guitar career, and almost all the parts on that song are inversions. After learning it, something clicked and I started using those inversions all the time. I just kept slowly adding more to my arsenal.
If this helps anyone. Number one and number two are just your E and A string power chords with an added fifth below the root Number one is like if you took a power chord from the E string root (let's say G) GDG And then moved it UP an octave And added a new D BELOW your new power chord shape Inversion two is this same idea but it's an octave up from your A String power chords But fun fact, your A string power chords can also be played in normal position with an extra fifth below them, and it sounds killer Also shape 5 is amazing for swells Root fifth Third Just remember your third changes from major to minor between chords and you can move it all over the neck for swells
On the piano, inversions are simple but for a good year, I couldn’t figure them out on the guitar until today with your great lesson. Thanks a 1,000,000.
Hi Troy, I have tried unsuccessfully to pick up on these shapes while watching other worship music tutorials. This very concise instruction video has been the breakthrough for me! I also just purchased and downloaded your Movable Chord Inversions eBook which further clarifies this very important playing structure. Many thanks, Brother in Christ for taking the time to put these tutorials together for us!
Very glad to hear that! There's a Worship Boot Camp available on the website you can go through as part of the membership. It will be a lot of help as well!
I’m making the shift from rhythm to lead and this was the first video that make sense to my brain to begin learning to invert chords. Thanks man! Soli deo Gloria
been playing on worship teams for over 20 years, and can tell you that your video nails the common inversions i've encountered in modern worship arrangements...love this vid- clear demonstration for anyone looking to understand what is going in with the chord voicings in these tunes...
Your explanation are easy to understand for me because for someone like me who has difficulty to memorize the notes but you teaching it in easiest way which is just remembering the shape and it goes on like in the other chords, thanks!
Same for me, the aha was triads. I think about it from a CAGED vantage. The most helpful strings to work were the D, G and B strings, because until then I only knew my E and A strings. I would basically play a 1, 5, 6, 4 progression using the group of inversions right next to each other in a zone. This is mentally like a capo - so this zone is like chords in G but just on those 3 strings. Then when I end on the 4 chord, slide that inversion shape to wherever it's the 1 chord (mentally move the capo) and play 1, 5, 6, 4 using those new zone shapes. Again at the end, slide whatever that 4 is to wherever the new 1 is. I did this for hours. I played in all the common keys for weeks, sliding between zones and it gave me so much freedom. In worship, i'll often play a verse in one "zone", then elevate to another for a chorus or whatever. Getting used to muting is the hardest part of this whole thing.
Thank you for your video. This is exactly what I needed. I have started to develop pain in my fretting hand from my current playing style, and poor form. I needed an alternative way of playing that doesn't stretch my hand out like barre chords. This allows me to learn something new and continue to play with less stress to my hand.
We have 2 electric guitars at my worship service...me playing edge rhythm stuff with lead lines and then there's inversion guy...it sounds awesome and big when played together. I really had no idea what the other guitar was actually doing. Thanks for 'splaining! God bless.
huh, never knew what these were called. i was calling them chord extensions since it was extending the chord intro the upper registry. thanks for taking the time!
Thanks Brother now I understand clearly and i will start practicing this. So I can use my electric guitar in church. Any chords move 2 frets play root and the third. Wow. God bless bro
Blessings Troy Thank you for showing these inversions they are very helpful in understanding the tones and moments videos you do and was very easy to follow
Dude thanks so much. I’ve had to watch this a few times and every time it clicks more and more. This is incredibly useful. Thanks for all the hard work.
You and I have almost the exact same approach to chord worship chord rhythm! My method is if I am strumming up and down continuously playing 16th notes I use diads, if I am playing some type of quick rhythmic pattern involving a ghost strum I use triads or 3-string chords, and if I strumming only down strokes or just one big ringing strum I use 4 or 5 string chord phrases.
Bro, thank you for showing how you keep your kids a priority. That was really inspiring as being a father is one of the highest callings we have. Keep up the great work!
Exactly what I was looking for! I've been playing lead worship for over a years, old blues / hard rock guy, and learning more each month on how it's different. The past few months I've spent a lot of time working to come up with these myself and your video just laid it out, thank you!
Bought the book !! It's only been six months or so since I stumbled on a set of dyads that allow you to cover all chords typically used in worship with just 3 dyads per key. These were D, F and A shapes. I'm hoping from your material I'll learn, among other things, how to actually mute properly and strum since with those dyads I'm just playing two strings, not muting and limited to downstrokes or arpeggio style.
thanks a lot may God almighty bless you abundantly i found this very useful i had been struglling figuring this out in most of the songs i watch guy fret
Good stuff. This stuff is confusing. Thanks for breaking it down in a relatable way. Looking forward to actually knowing what I'm playing instead of everything by ear.
Much easier to understand them if you base them around the chord shape they are based on...for example, your "#1" is based on the D position major chord, just the bottom of it... the "counting up two frets" is counter intuitive and doesn't help one understand why you are playing in a certain position
Wow. Super helpful video! Nice to get a simple to understand breakdown without having to first listen to the person making he video shred for 4 minutes :)
Guitar for HIS Glory yes I just want an example on how to use them together or what are the most common inversions you use on a song and how you mix between inversions
I don't see how someone who really understands Blues would be oblivious to Chord Inversions? Ever learn the High Guitar part to The Killing Floor? Second Inversion I Triad, First Inversion ii Minor Triad, First Inversion I Minor Triad-all easily playable on the Top Three Strings. Many Black Blues Performers also double as Gospel Performers. I should know, having often played gigs in Blues clubs and occasionally Black churches.
That’s just my experience. Not sure why I never learned them, to be honest. But apparently a lot of people feel the same way. You must be special. :) Haha. Thanks for your thoughts, Craig.
I find myself using all of these inversions without knowing much theory and figuring out what notes to play, based on listening to what I've played for years. Regular chords are for acoustic guitar players.
That's awesome. Knowing the theory behind the chord structure really increases confidence. You should work on that as well. Nothing wrong with improving, you know?!
Salvation through Jesus, amen to that! For me He’s the only reason I find purpose playing guitar and I Love how you constantly testify to His name! Oh and great video :)

Early 2000’s Crowder tunings got me into inversions and made music theory super applicable to guitar for me.
Light bub moment was 20 years ago. I bought the Guitar Grimoire.

If this helps anyone.

Big respect for playing with your kids over doing the video first
Amen, bro. It doesn't always work out like that, but sometimes I make the right choice.
Yeah man, in the very likely event that this TH-cam thing crashes you still got them. Be encouraged brother and keep doing what you're doing
LOL. This is a way for me to serve my brothers and sisters. I have a day job. LOL. But yes, Lord willing, my kids will be there. :)
Yes yes yes.. Triad a d 4 note inversions were the light bulb 4 me
I accidentally discovered this "inversion" when im trying not to sound muddy or noise( like my sound is scattering around the room)..😅
Dude...Thanks!
You're welcome!
