Why are Blundstones SO popular?

  • A few weeks ago I stumbled on a video by Levi Hildebrand about why Birkenstocks are so popular. The best part was that his thoughts about those were my same thoughts about Blundstone! And as a hardcore boot fan, I wanted to look into what the hype was all about, so I got myself a pair! Thanks to Levi for the inspiration, I hope I did him justice - go check out his channel!

      Yeah! Just got blessed with the a sale on the 558s. [Black Leather] Had them for maybe a month now.
      It's common to see Blunnies out here, I could see 3 or 4 pairs on any given subway ride.
      They're the perfect mix of versatility, resilience and comfort especially when transitioning from indoor to outdoor in the winter. Great for downtown Toronto or anywhere in Canada.
      And Toronto would love to host you man! It's a great city!! Love to NY and Australia.

      Yeah the versatility and simplicity of the blundstones in my opinion is what makes them so appealing! And Toronto isn’t too far, only a five hour drive or so! Maybe Ill come up when my rangers are playing the maple leafs!

      @@Rolz Massive in London, 60% fashion and 40% are worn by construction workers in there safety form ( loads of tradies on the metro transport in them)
      but these are a fashion must for middle class Italian families, and I mean the entire family.
      In the north big fashion for both men and women but go to any city or town and you will find men/young lads in blundies, even in the hottest of months.

    I had an older pair of 500s that I got from the Australia Fair shop in San Francisco. After several years the soles fell apart just as you described. I contacted Blundstone and they replaced my boots, I just had to pay for shipping. Great company with great customer service. I’m wearing them right now!

      See I love that they actually stood behind their product and gave you a new pair. To me several years is enough out of boots that I think they have done a great service to the wearer. Seems too many people want their boots lasting for eternity!

    My daughter and I bought pairs on the weekend. I got Stout Brown 500 and she got Rustic Brown 550. I just ordered a second pair - Antique Brown 550. It's important to give your boots a day between wears to dry out from all the moisture they absorb from your feet, so I always have two pairs of whatever I'm wearing. I grew up in Australia and my Dad would always wear Blundstones. Wore each pair until they were falling apart, which was a long time. I didn't grow to appreciate boots until I was older.

      That’s awesome! My favorite part of your comment is that the same product has been used by three generations in your family now! I think it really attests to the greatness of a brand when they can be worn by generation after generation and hopefully they’ll still be around for many many more! And damn I gotta get another pair now haha

      I'm going back and forth between the walnut, rustic, and antique brown. Any advice?

    • @dangermandave67
      @dangermandave67 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Andrew_Dominik It's really a matter of personal preference. I have the Stout Brown (#500), which is almost black. That is the traditional color of Blundstones and looks better as it gets scratched up. I wear those when I don't care about wear and tear. They look just like work boots and that isn't going to appeal to people who buy Blunnies for fashion, unless you are John Butler and don't give a shit. When you see those pictures of Blunnies that are really scratched up and worn and cool-looking, those are old #500 boots that have seen some life. I also have a pair of Antique Brown boots (#1609) and these are leather lined and have a tighter fit than the #500 boots. These accumulate stains, etc and I don't like wearing them if things are going to get messy. They are my dressing up boots, to the extent I do that... The walnut boots would be the most dressy option and I'd probably fret about scratching those. My daughter's rustic brown boots look like #500 boots that are really old and totally have the finish scratched off them. I guess that's cool but I prefer to age my boots myself.

    Rossi boots are probably, Australia's most underrated boot. I owned three pairs of Blundstone boots in the past, one pair made in Australia, the two pairs were made in Vietnam. The pair made in Australia lasted me for five years, the two pairs that were made in Vietnam lasted me 6 months and 8 months respectively. The pair that lasted for 6 months, the inside lining just worn through, and the elastic sides became frayed. The pair that lasted for 8 months, a split occurred across the sole of one boot. Both of these pairs were quickly trashed. However, I purchased a pair of Rossi 303 soft toe boots in 2008. Early this year, the soles disintegrated, and the boots got trashed. At first, I worn them as casual boots, (very comfortable for long periods of walking). A few years later, I used them as gardening boots, and were treated roughly. After a few years of gardening abused, I decided to wear them to work. I filled in all the divots in the leather with polish. Gave the boots a good polish, and were good-as to wear to work. After a couple of years wearing the boots to work, I bought a pair of Rossi 301 to wear to work. The 303's were again relegated back to the garden for more abuse. Finally, the soles gave way. The leather was still good. So I cut away the leather from the sole to be used for a leather hobby project. Not bad for a pair of boots that lasted for 11 years. The other issue that I have with Blundstone is the cost. I went to tradesman shop to look for another pair of Rossi boots. Whilst there, I compared the prices between the Blundstone boots (made in Vietnam) and the Rossi boots. The Rossi boots were only an extra 7 dollars. For an Australian made quality footwear, that's excellent value. The reason why Blundstone boots are so popular, is because of the marketing hype as a casual boot for street wear. Put the Blundstone boots into really hard yakka, and they will not last a year. Give Rossi Boots a go! Compare them with Blundstone thoroughly and you make the choice. A thicker leather, and slightly heavier sole will be the only con. A boot for both work...and...play.

    • @TheMensch
      @TheMensch  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Thanks so much for this insightful comment- I really appreciate it! Yes, I totally agree with you the cost of the Blundstone is insane when you look at the product you’re getting. It’s a shame I never got to pick up a pair of the made in Australia ones - im too young to have gotten that opportunity - but it seems like that’s what made them so popular in the first place. The ones I got In this video I actually bought as factory seconds for $70 USD which i think is what these boots should probably be priced at. As a business, it’s hard to fault them because I’m sure they realized most people that wear them are people more into the lifestyle than the actual performance of the boot so they cut costs by manufacturing overseas. I’ve been meaning to get my hands on a pair of Rossi especially becuase they’re actually $50 less than blundstones retail price! They look nearly identical too in a good way. Seems especially based on your experience that they are the hands down better value. Let’s see if they catch on as well as the blundstones did!

    • @JuvoII
      @JuvoII 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know all these moving production to the far east. It's not just the labour becoming unskilled, the fabricants also take a deep dive in quality of the materials used. So even a good vietnamese worker, can't do anything, cause they are using shitty threads, and poor sole rubber, and it's the fabricant who is to blame for the short lifespan. If the shoe arrives with faults, it's the unskilled worker. If the sole goes of it's the glue that's shitty, if the thread breaks it's a bad quality thread. These things are the western CEO. He did not just hire cheaper labour, he also went with cheaper materials. He thinks life is a game of monopoly.
      The ones who are getting praise, like Meermin, are the ones who did move the production to the far east, but did not reduce quality of materials used. In other words, there were issues in the beginning, but as the workers got better, those issues disappeared. Not so with others, like Dr Martens, who also lowered quality of materials while they were at it.

    I like the slip on factor but I have this weird thing about rugged boots and the lack of laces. My feet are slightly narrow and most slip ons allow too much dead space which then lead to friction if there’s no lock down support. How do these fit as far as dead space in the boot? Do you feel your foot traveling around or is it pretty snug?

    • @TheMensch
      @TheMensch  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Absolutely my favourite boots. Spend the extra few dollars and get the leather lining. Really, no break in. Tough as nails and very comfortable. I understand people’s disappointment when a manufacturer moves to a second or third world country but that does not always equate to poorer quality. Very high end mountain bikes have been built in the Far East for decades. The quality is in the brand. You benefit from a better price point. It’s a misconception that jobs are being taken away. These are jobs that most first world kids do not aspire to. If you want to be an artisan cobbler and you’re driven and talented you will succeed... but you won’t be happy selling your boots for this price.

    The thing about blunt stones is you cannot let them sit in your closet for a long period of time because that will cause them to decompose they were made to be worn. I had a pair which I had packed away when we moved and unfortunately we didn’t find them for almost 2 years when I finally did find the shoes I’ve made mistake of wearing them to the CES convention which I was working at the time three hours later I had to call my wife and say bring me some shoes now because my Blundstone ones had actually completely decomposed on me while I was wearing them at work. Of course for some reason all my coworkers found it extremely funny at the time this year I have purchased myself another pair because I know that when you’re working on a hard cement floor Blundstone’s are the only shoes to wear. I am in the process right now of breaking them in and hopefully I won’t have the same problem as I did a couple years ago LOL

    The generic term for these is riding boots, they save you when you are riding a horse and there is a fall and your boot gets caught in the stirrup. Rather than getting caught up and maybe dragged along the boot will slip off.

      Sparkes-Halls patented elastic ankle boots in 1837 in England. Originally called Congress boots they became more popular when vulcanized rubber was developed. A general wear and dress boot not specifically for horse riding. The designs from the turn of the century are pretty close to what we see now in the leather sole versions.

    • @TheMensch
      @TheMensch  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah they should def improve over time as the back leather by the Achilles’ tendon gets looser - I always recommend sizing down and letting the boots stretch and shape to your foot so I’d say as long as your foot is snug inside the boot stick with it

    Also, what is the proper way to clean blunnies? I have a nick wax but it causes it to become darker than usual. I have the brown as well. I was told that the winter versions in Canada are pre treated so most have that matte look that I adore.

    • @TheMensch
      @TheMensch  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm depends on what you have - I’d recommend walrus oil leather wax or otter wax boot wax. The wax content gives them that Matte finish you’re looking for and they still condition more than nikwax does!

      damn I just can't imagine they are saving that much money by lowering the quality of outsole but I guess they feel like their boots are more of a fashion statement than a functional tool.

      The Mensch on Menswear I meant they’ve actually improved the outsole - they’re using a more durable material that doesn’t deteriorate so quickly - particularly in the snow. They aren’t realty designed for super cold weather - it doesn’t snow in most parts of Australia.

      thats really disappointing to hear! half a year is not enough time even with frequent wear to have that happen. Another person commented here and said he commented on Blundstones FB post and they responded saying they wanted to make it right (prob send him a free pair) so maybe you can try getting in touch with them about replacing them. Of course now you know they simply aren't the most durable shoes but at least you can get something out of the experience.

      Good questions! I got the same size as my red wings (size 9US) but be careful how they size! They run according to AU sizing so I bought an 8AU and they say US9 inside so just be aware. They are actually decently insulated but becuase the collar is a Chelsea elastic there is more space for air to leak through that with an air tight seal from laces. I find them totally fine in cold weather but I wouldn’t go for them below 30 Fahrenheit! Lmk your thoughts

    Thinking about buying them, but the sole gives me some pause. It doesn’t seem like it’s a quality sole. And the boot as a whole doesn’t seem like it’s a quality shoe. It seems cheap to me. Even the weight, to me, suggests they’re cheap, but overpriced. It’s especially the sole I have concerns with, and the clip you showed where somebody had a bust out sole doesn’t seem surprising to me from my examination and opinion of the sole just from visual examination. I may be wrong about these concerns, and I hope I am. But I get the suspicion that they’re not as good as they seem to be said to be. I suspect, and you mention, they used to be good, and as with many products these days, the company was sold to another outfit or something and they got greedy and started cutting corners, so they’re not really good anymore, kind of surviving on their previous reputation which they probably don’t have anymore. I hope I am wrong, and I may be, but my impression of them is they’re kind of crappy but overpriced. And as often happen, when people pay a lot for something they’re reluctant to admit it’s a waste! They try to justify it and hype it and convince themselves it really worth the value they attach to it. Maybe that’s what’s going on with these boots at about $200 today. Again, I hope I am wrong. What would be helpful is if somebody was able to cut them lengthwise and see what the sole is really like! My impression is it’s one of those cheaper Chinese hollow soles. I hope I am wrong. Perhaps the person with the bust soles really abused them too much! But then again as outback boots they need to be able to take the beating!

    • @TheMensch
      @TheMensch  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha thanks for your comment and I appreciate you saying that u hope you’re wrong - a lot of people are looking for things they can hate on. I think the points you brought up are all valid. I think it depends on what you’re using them for but for sure the soles aren’t anything to brag about. Mine have still held up really well but like you’re saying for close to $200 they’re really relying on reputation more than superior quality. But like I said, I got mine for $80 on Sierra.com as factory seconds and for that price they’re more than a good value. But I ave to agree that if you plan on using these for heavy work, they aren’t a great choice. Cheers ✌️

    The leather is good but the souls don't last, mine the rubber has literally fallen apart and although I have had them for about 4 years, I haven't really worn them much at all, pretty disappointed, they used to be good when they were made in Australia, now they're shit 👎🏽 (from australia)

      Haha yeah I’ve heard that the soles are a big issue with blundstones. It’s really sad to see them downgrade their materials to such a low standard. I’ve heard that hot temperatures are a cause of the rubber sole wearing out so I try not to wear them in the summer!

  • @deezy9622

    They have only become popular in the US. Recently as they are now “trendy” the hipsters have picked them up now it’s cool. Here in OZ they have always been here, nothing special, not “trendy” just a blue collar standard boot.

    • @TheMensch
      @TheMensch  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed - I think what starts with hipsters generally moves to the public and so getting more guys in boots instead of trendy sneakers is a good thing imo!

      Right, feels more comfy but at the same time more heavier. I made a full review of Blundstone vs Redback here th-cam.com/video/UgQVjdFXO_U/w-d-xo.html don’t forget to turn the English CC on

      You wouldn’t be wrong - I think in terms of quality it is overrated. I really think it’s more of a trend these days and a fashion thing. But honestly I do enjoy wearing these when I’m feeling lazy or need something quick for a light hike that can take me from the office to the trailhead

  • @windbagfusspot6155

    Advertisement video. The quality is shite now and I say this as a once proud Australian who has been wearing blunnies on and off since the 80's. Went to buy the 600 recently and it was depressing to see how low they have gone on quality. Redbacks are great but not if you don't need the chunky industrial look.

    Everyone thinks they won't have the 'problem' with the sole, till they do...
    Don't believe the hype people these are just a spongey soled chelsea boots that is now manufactured by the lowest bidder. Much better and cheaper alternatives out there.

    • @TheMensch
      @TheMensch  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn’t disagree with you - def not the best boot you can buy with $170! I think it’s such a shame they don’t offer a AU made version for a bit more money. It would make a big difference in their image and reward loyal fans for sticking with them
