    Britain this is an outrage. How could anyone with a conscience defend someone who not only gleefully murdered innocent civilians but gloated and lied that they had killed gunmen. How can you live with the thought that criminals like that walk among you. This is an outrage. If they try to stop these prosecutions there will be serious repercussions.

      This event is in living memory, not history.
      The British State and Army said they were terrorists and they weren't.
      So, not only killed them but sullied their memory also.
      Seems the British Army weren't the 'goodies' in Northern Ireland, many British people make them out to be.
      British soldiers represented the State when they shot those innocent people.
      If you think there should be a general amnesty re legacy killings in Northern Ireland, then you are putting the British Army in the same category as terrorists.

      @@Drifty40 The main suspect in the Kingsmill massacre was an ex-soldier linked to 30 murders and he was also a paid informant (allegedly). The authorities already know who committed this atrocity and even awarded two of the (alleged) perpetrators with comfort letters. You will have to ask the UK Government as to why they have never followed through with prosecutions in this case and as to why they still refuse to release all documents relating to this atrocity.

    This is an Extremely Sad day for Genuine British People living in England, that were fed Lies upon Lies about the Troubles in the North of Ireland over this Period.
    We have all watched BBC Spotlight Programmes etc. over the years, and Public Tribunal's of cover ups by the Whole British System during these Periods.
    So we can see for ourselves, something was very wrong in Ireland.
    The biggest mistake was made, when British troops were sent into a situation that they knew nothing about, to be Peace keepers. The Majority of the Population in this part of Ireland going back to 1921 at the foundation of this State seen themselves as British and it's fair to say, took full advantage of this, with Jobs, Gerrymandering Voting, Housing etc.
    The British army could only take one side, (The British Majority.)
    There was plenty of Atrocities over the years from 1921 leading up to 1969 .
    The Catholics started a Peaceful Civil Rights movement to claim for Equal Rights , and this is where all the Violence started.
    The then Orange State didn't see anything wrong with treating Catholics as second class citizens???
    The History is out there for anyone who wishes to Educate themselves on these facts.
    No Population living in England would tolerate the same circumstances that the Native Catholics had to endure in their own Land.
    I hope lessons have been learned, and both People's can come together as one.
    I am so sorry for all the Families involved!

    The tragedy of this is that two men, who would be instrumental in the IRA. Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness witnessed two massacre's within six months of each other. Initiated by the leader of the parachute regiment. The now leader of the British armed forces Peter Jackson. Up until that point, the IRA had very little support. The question that begs to be asked, is would the conflict take a different rout if the British hadn't taken such strong armed approach?.
    While it has to be acknowledged, history is never that simple and to reduce chain of events to one point in history. Often overshadows the motives and behaviors of other marginalized forces that were beginning to gain a foothold in Northern Ireland. However, one has to ask the question, what was the role of the British security forces in the North Ireland at that time. We know that along, with British Security Forces the RUC and UDA ran a clandestine unit called Glenanne Gang that were responsible for Dublin and Monaghan bombings, the Miami show band killing and Hill crest bar bombing. The worst of these members was Robin Jackson a security operative that has been know to have been involved in at least 20 murders of civilians. Jackson is the key to unlock this relationship, between MI5, RUC and loyalist paramilitaries, because Jackson was also a member Special Patrol Group..
    It's here that we begin to uncover, the true extent of British collision who ran operatives in shoot to kill policy that would latter take Pat Finucane life, the Mobile Reaction Group and the Forced Research Group would target Trade Unionist, Human rights lawyers and Journalist. The reason why this is significant is because the leadership of these groups, such as Sir Gordon Wier the head of the forced research Unit would play a massive role in clandestine operation in Iraq. It is my suspicion that Pat Finucane case will not be heard, is precisely to protect Sir Gordon Wier. The true extent of his influence in Iraq will not be known for at least another 50 years, long before he is dead. But if anything is to go by, his finger prints on the Northern Ireland conflict will follow same trajectory in Iraq

      The UK Government continue to refuse to release documents on a number of atrocities on the grounds of "National Security", even though some of these occurred in the 1970's. Some of these documents are sealed until 2054 and I would guess even at that stage they will be heavily redacted.

      @arthurgoodness7865 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Yourda 473i of course the Irish Government strongly denies assisting the IRA because it did not happen. The evidence simply would not back up your claim. That does not mean that some Irish politicians were not sympathetic to the cause and supported the armed conflict. A couple of Ministers even tried to send money to the republican movement in the early 70's so that they could purchase weapons to defend their communities from loyalist attacks. And members of the Gardai, especially in the border counties, did support the IRA and gave them information and warned them about impending arrests.
      But it would be ridiculous to put Ireland's level of involvement on a par with that of the UK Government. The Special Branch, MI5, British Army, these were all running and controlling agents/informants in the republican and loyalist paramilitaries. Many of these informants have since been implicated in a number of murders and atrocities - Kingsmill, Enniskillen, Loughlinisland, Miami Showband.

    • @arthurgoodness7865
      @arthurgoodness7865 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @terry phidaheights throughout the conflict prisons in Northern Ireland, England and Ireland were full of republican prisoners so I don't see how your point is relevant.
      But why did you just mention the IRA and omit the loyalists who actually murdered the most innocent men, women and children during the troubles?
      There have also been republican paramilitaries prosecuted and convicted for historic crimes and there is a significant case at the moment which is set to resume shortly. Although it is looking more likely that he will walk away from this prosecution if the UK Government proceed with their "amnesty" for crimes committed prior to the signing of the GFA in 1998. So by bringing in this amnesty the UK Government are protecting everyone from prosecutions for historic crimes - republicans, loyalists and british security personnel.

      Sinn Fein was the most voted party in the Republic last year, you say nonsense. In the next elections Stormont will also win and there will be a nationalist prime minister, the occupation will end very soon. Ireland's gross domestic product is $ 448 billion, you keep saying nonsense.

      Why are you directing your comments on people that have no links to the IRA? Keep fighting for justice for those people just like the families of the ballymurphy massacre and hopefully you receive justice one day.
      Not all "catholics" are IRA sympathisers and the families and friends of those killed in ballymurphy have no links to the IRA nor did anyone who was murdered that day that is the exact point of the whole inquiry, it was to clear the victims and families who were labeled as IRA members when infact they were innocent civilians, so I don't see how anyone involved in the ballymurphy massacre should be held accountable for the deaths of other innocent people from unionist backrounds??
      I think you should take up the matter of an inquiry for justice for unionist civilians with local MLAs and the PSNI as looking for answers from people with no links to the IRA isn't going to lead to results.

      Same problem in loads of places. A lot of oversimplification below, FYI. British empire governed their empire via divide & rule. They encouraged divisions via race or religion or anything. If the natives fought amongst themselves, they wouldn’t rise up against their oppressors. Same in India and Syria/Lebanon, South Africa, etc. Then when they left, they partitioned countries via those lines. Catholics in NofI fought for equal rights since partition with little success. Catholics couldn’t get good jobs or property, etc. The ruling Protestant community ran an apartheid land to preserve their power. In the 1960s, encouraged by MLK Jr, Catholics started peaceful protests for equal rights. British govt responded with troops & bullets. Where US passed laws for civil rights & integration & sent military to ensure African Americans were protected, British govt sent in troops to maintain the status quo. So some Republicans/Catholics turned to violent means to achieve their goals, because peaceful ones weren’t working. The IRA had a counter-force in the Protestant community (UDA/UVF). The protestant paramilitary community was actually older, set up in 1913 by the Belfast Agreement. Protestant communities raised armies bc they were afraid that Ireland would get independence & were willing to fight to stay in the U.K. It was this force that spurred the Republican/Catholic communities to create the IRA. The British govt couldn’t handle fighting a guerrilla war on their own land & acted very inappropriately with their military. The families of those indiscriminately shot by the military have spent the last 50+years seeking justice. BTW the apartheid situation only ended in 1999 with the good Friday agreement. The analogy to S Africa by the journalist is appalling. The indigenous Catholic community did not become the powerful community that the indigenous black community did in S Africa. Plus the issues in S Africa were internal between the 2 communities living there, not a third community (the British army) raining bullets. HTH.

      @Yourda 473i They were being burnt out of their homes. Its hard to grasp it given Irelands lived experience but they were not Marxists and didn't have an analysis of the role of the armed forces as part of an Imperialist State. Do you think they should have asked the Irish Army to go in? I somehow don't think that would have bern straightforward.
