Maybe make another fan video .hint hint?? I'm watching this again tonight and just thought that you could have scraped a pile of magnesium off of the side covers of the engine.. to take with you as fire extender. Just a thought
Never apologise for stopping to tell stories. I love that you tell a lot of stories about how the episodes came together. I have wanted these for so many years, even before they started on SMTV, just glad we have more now. Thank you Les

I was working a dead-end job when I discovered Survivorman one evening.
I was hooked after ten minutes. It was educational, entertaining and really great escapism when I needed it. I bought my multitool because of your show.
Do not apologize for saying how you were the first at something. If that's bragging, you earned the right. The others walk in your footsteps. :)

This is so great. The Arizona episode was the first episode I ever saw, and it's what got me into Survivorman! My dad showed it to me one night when I was staying over at his place. Lots of cool memories surrounding this episode!

@@AR-zf7wu Les had more confidence in his presentation as the years went on, and the camera technology obviously improved. But like you, I miss the simpler D. I. Y. look and feel of the early episodes.
I know it’s a lot to ask but please keep making these directors commentary videos cause they are incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining.

I live in Tucson AZ. And yes it is beautiful here. People who aren't from here have no idea how diverse the climate and terrain is according to elevations. I spend a lot of time camping, backpacking, and surviving the Sonoran Desert. I especially enjoyed this episode. Les Stroud is a God to some. Thank you Les!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Survivor Man was the first survival show I watched and I was addicted immediately. I have been watching nature survival shows ever since. I'm so glad these Director Commentary's are available. I always knew deep down that Les had a distaste for Bear, and I love that.
Thumbs UP to all the GREAT comments, Your work is great, but the best is being open about things like "It's not me on the Bike" " I got training from" and breaking the 4-WALL. That is what hooked me on the shows, seeing you hike back and get the camera. I showed my kids, and pointed out that's twice the distance traveled. I have been riding for over 15 years. Always loved this episode because it is reminiscent of where I grew up riding in New Mexico. My dad and I used to reference this episode on our rides, in case we were ever to get stranded. Thanks Les.

I really loved this one because I'm always out bush on my bikes.
I'm actually surprised Les never really got into motorbikes because they are so handy for bush bashing.
Now I'm getting older I prefer the quads coz I can carry a bit more gear (beer) and be a bit more comfortable (drunk) when I camp.
I'm usually solo so I always tell the missus roughly where I'm going and when I'll be back just in case something goes wrong.
You know Les, I've often gone back to this grass roots Survivorman Desert video because it was kinda psychedelic and SO REAL.
Just driving up the395 out of Barstow to Mammoth I've spent a lot of time in the desert foothills, fishing wild trout. It's truly Magic.

The first ever survival show I watched had to have been season 1, and I think I as no older than 6. Not to make you feel old, Les, but you should know that despite being little more than a toddler I have extremely CLEAR memories of watching this show, like photographic memories of sitting on the living room floor watching Les play harmonica against a wrecked plane in what I could only imagine was a winter wonderland since I had yet to see snow in my native California. Anyway, it makes me smile to hear you finally call out the "copycats" by name. You are the OG.

Survivorman was one of my favorite shows when I had cable TV back in 2007. I had no idea you were on TH-cam! This is awesome. I'm indulging in quite the marathon which has been a welcome entertainment I rarely indulge in these days for reasons that so much is propaganda. It's nice to see honest entertainment with true educational value. You have every right to boast and take credit for your innovations. An Olympian isn't sheepish about the gold they worked hard to score, & you shouldn't be shy about owning your scorpion.

I grew up as a Surfer. Mother nature at her best.
I learned from Hawaiian elders how to fish throw net ,and surrounding schools of fish. It made me a complete waterman.
In surfing, people ride waves a certain way for years.and then some kid comes along and shows how to fly in the air and land back on the wave.
Breaking down those barriers in our minds.
This is what you did with surviving. And camera angles and so much more.

Bear Grylls was a member of the SAS. That's the British equivalent of the Navy SEALS. And you talk about requiring discipline and knowledge? WTF? This poetic hate of him is ridiculous.
@@keithbecker3142 Well, first my joking commentary on the situation was aimed at the Producers of Man vs. Wild that copied the things Survivorman was already doing. Second, it was a joke. Third, while I have no doubt about Bear Grylls ability to operate in a combat scenario, that's a little different than what Les was teaching and preaching. And I'm sorry, but it's also just funny to me that with the dozens of water sources Les can show to be present in an area, Man vs. Wild went with being sensational and had Mr. Grylls do things like squeeze water into his mouth out of cow dung. If you don't see the humor in that, then i think we're on two different wave lengths.

If it was marketed as an adventure show instead of survival, then Les wouldn't have had any problems with it, imo.
I love watching the Commentary Episodes for the stories behind the filming.
I always liked that original theme, Im so impressed that Survivorman actually wrote and produced it, thats why it went so well with the show.

I've lived in AZ my entire life and I remember as a 12 year old boy falling in love with Survivorman because of this episode. Since then, I've enjoyed all your content and got the 20th anniversary for my brother's 30th b-day. Thank you for the educational and yet entertaining material. Quick question, have you ever considered revisiting the southwest of the US for more content? You mentioned how AZ would be a great Wild Harvest episode, that would be fantastic to see.
Harvest in Tucsons desert and going up Mount Lemmon pine forests also the mixed-conifer forest in between them . Just an idea
i like revisiting these. Really like the "Les on Les" perspective.
Watching these episodes as a teenager taught me self reliance and so many skills that I use often. It’s been wonderful rewatching them over and over. Pure Nostalgia for me. Thank you for all the joy you have given me and so many others Les. I hope to shake your hand one day and thank you in person.

The first survival show I saw was man vs. wild. basically entertaining, but you see things that you don't do in a situation where it's about survival. e.g. enter a cave or mine. I also like to look on the map where people are and I quickly noticed that to get from point A to point B, Bear Grills had to cross a freeway. So actually would have been saved.
Then I saw Survivorman and I love it. It's just real, just because you're traveling alone, filming yourself and you can see that in certain film scenes.
I like your comments on this series.

I live in Tucson and I loved this episode. The commentary was excellent and I’m glad you appreciate our desert. Many people don’t or can’t see the beauty.
Les your passion shines brightly throughout all your work, especially Survivorman. I was born in 1989 with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bones disease). I was born with 7 broken bones and was destined to use a wheelchair for the rest of my life.
When I first found Survivorman circa 2003, I immediately fell in love with it. Nature has always interested and fascinated me, but being a power wheelchair user anytime I’m outside my home, I never got to go outside and explore like I wanted.
Watching each new episode and each new season of Survivorman, your work completely captivated me and brought me deep into nature like I’d always dreamed of being able to do.
Les, you are an inspiration to me and have brought me so much joy with all your shows throughout the years and I want to wish you all the best! Take care!

We all know now that there are hundreds of thousands of fake trolls out here doing horrible things. Why cant we all get rid of this drama and times we are living and respect all of the great things and times that are so tremendous and exiting. I can tell so many stories hanging out with roomates and family watching Survivor man back in Season 1 and 2. Then later on a decade later with my Wife and absolutely making sure we recorded and DVR's these shows. Amazing times Les Stroud. Thank you for coming up with these Docu Series Commentary internet shows. I am loving a new perspective and cannot wait till I show Kate these newer takes on what people really need to digest and invest in these days. That and this is called REALITY. Facebook wants to Seduce people into a "META VERSE". No Thank You! I think responsible people want to live in the Real World and take care of real world families and make decisions based on reality and not Fictional world. Thank you Les. I like these commentaries for any extra info that you don't get from just watching it; I think it's really fun/neat. My friend that I'm getting started on your content enjoys this from a filmmakers perspective. He's a photographer/filmmaker that wants to learn why I enjoy your style compared to network tv vs films etc.
I'm really enjoying the directors commentary. A lot of this stuff I knew because most of my extended family are native Americans and I would always be in the woods when I was a kid. Being an Oregon kid, that ain't hard.
Btw, when my kids wanted to eat grasshoppers I had two conditions, that we fry them with rice grass and pinon nuts like our Shoshone ancestors and we had to leave about five For fish bait. Then we'd cut a willow rod scrounge up some line on the creek bank and not use any weight. Its all about presentation and fish love a grasshopper or cricket just floating down the stream. Thanx for the videos. Twenty years on and the kids and I still love them.
Hi Les! Firstly let me say, I'm a huge fan and love SurvivorMan! Thank you for doing this Directors Commentary! I appreciate how authentic you try to make all your shows. I do have a few thoughts about the Sonoran dessert. Certainly some of this is detail/minutia you wouldn't need to or have time to get to in the show.
1.) Javelina (Collared Peccaries), in my experience and based on what I have read in the news, generally only attack if you have a dog with you. I have hunted them, and in general they want to get away from you. Usually when you bump them, the lead "pig" will "woof", and they will run away. I do know of once instance where a hunter had to defensively shoot one, because they were heading down a trail somewhat aggressively and the lead pig took it as a charge and charged him back.
2.) I think you mentioned this above, and I agree this was probably one of the most optimistic times of year to survive. In the Sonoran desert, in most months it would be pretty hard to go for 4 days with only a gallon. As you mentioned, many variables come into play. Also, most water sources are pretty hard to find if you're out randomly exploring the desert, and the water you do come across has seen heavy usage by animals. So in that case, you'd need a way to purify the water as well. I agree with your point about Giardia, but I have friends who have done "survival" camps, and have gotten really bad diarrhea in a matter of a day or two from bad water. Given your experience, maybe you know what they got (some bad bacteria?) out here? I have also heard that dissolved minerals might have the same effect?
3.) Most of the plant edibles you came across are only available for a limited time in the Spring. There are some varieties of prickly pear that have fruit into Summer. Also, some of the prickly pear & such will upset your stomach or give you the runs if you're not used to it (I know from experience. ;-) ). The mesquite pods will fall to the ground, and usually after a few weeks, various bugs, etc. will eat them. Sometimes you get lucky and some will lodge in the crotch of the tree. Mesquite pods are delicious!
4.) Scorpions - you're absolutely right. They love shoes, and hiding under things. Black widows - these ladies are very, very shy and will run and hide at the first sign of trouble. Never have had any problems with them camping, etc. I have about 10-20 of them in my yard at anytime.
Just remind the parents, kids were eating worms and bugs long before Survivorman. ;-) I tried cooking and eating an earth worm when I kid. 😀

I grew up in Arizona and did walk out of the dessert about 10 miles in a similar circumstance on a very hot day a few years before you was there. It was blind luck and youthful endurance that I survived to tell the tale. Finding water would have been nice! and of course I didn't tell anyone where I was going! No cell phones then either. To be old and wise, you must first be young and dumb, right! That motorbike was a Kawasaki KX250. A very powerful motocross bike for very experienced riders. Not the motorbike for learning on! Probably a very good thing you didn't push yourself to ride that one!
