  • Neoliberalism, warns Professor Wendy Brown, has created a form of reasoning in which human beings are reduced to their economic value and activity, and in which all fields of human activity are treated as markets and institutions, including the state, are increasingly run as if they were corporations. This logic is even applied to activities with no connection to wealth creation, such as education, dating, or physical exercise, which are increasingly governed according to market rules. People are treated in this schema, as units of human capital who must constantly tend to their own present and future value.

This professor is extremely articulate and her analysis is insightful, important and ahead of the curve on many issues. This represents the best of academia and what we're rapidly losing by turning universities into businesses.

Quite insightful & almost painfully thought-provoking. I cringed reflecting on how often, when speaking to my children, I've stressed the importance of a college degree *for* financial security. I'd certainly rather they be well rounded & fulfilled than fixated on earnings & miserable. Thank you for giving this parent a much-needed gut check.

Free and fair education is an essential pillar of democracy, and the commodification of the education system directly correlates with the decline of social mobility in this country. If access to quality education is limited to the elite few, and our economy has shifted from a labor economy to an ideas economy, guess who will hold all the power?

Democracy was not created at the University. And I might agree with your idea that higher education is a benefit to humanity if not for the university officers collecting $400,000 salaries. Spare me.

That $400,000 salary is literally what she's critiquing.
