  • The brilliant actor-comic-writer plays a Jewish cab driver in director Sidney Lumet's adaptation of Wallace Markfield's 1964 novel, "To An Early Grave." Filmed on Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn.

They should play these movie clips in school so these kids can realize what life is really like!

Great performance by all of them. Godfrey Cambridge died too young. This scene, on Eastern Parkway & Bedford Avenue, was filmed three blocks from where I grew up. To tell you the truth ... there were a lot of better places to grow up than that neighborhood!

Alas, George Segal and Jessica Walter (both featured in this movie) just died this week, only one day apart... 😢

Thanks to The Forward for resurrecting "Braverman." It was always an under-appreciated gem to me. Alan King as the rabbi at the "wrong" funeral was also brilliant. Cambridge steals this scene, but all are fabulous. OK, not all of it holds up 50+ years later, but what a hoot.

Classic stuff....I've searched all over TH-cam for more on this classic film, and all I found was three lousy links.

one of many, many Jewish plays turned comedy films made in the late 60's early 70's; Who is Harry Kellerman., The Angel Levine, Where's Papa, The Phil Silvers Show, I Love You Alice B. Toklas, Goodbye, Columbus, Play it Again, Sam, The Night They Raided Minsky's, The Odd Couple, Little Murders, and to a lesser extent Cactus Flower, The Graduate and The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravits. . Lots of city scenes, long monologues, overbearing parents, Yiddish terms, thick accents, coats and hats, and some religious ceremony...usually a wedding. And there's always a short fat goofy looking individual along side the tall sort of good looking sourpuss hero. And anyone under 30 is shown as a cliche pancho wearing Mothers of Invention imitator...or a hot chick if female.

diddy I love Jewish comedy. They understand irony. How else could you be married and still not have a date for New Years. lol I've seen all but two of the movies you listed. I'll have to look up Angel Levine and Little Murders. Thanks so much.:o)

I love late '60s Jewish New York films. You're right, there were quite a few of them for a time.

Eastern Parkway & Bedford Avenue. George Segal also was in a film two blocks away from there ...Eastern Parkway and Washington Avenue. That film was The Hot Rock, about a burglary at the Brooklyn Museum.

Was the entire movie THIS tedious? It's hard to tell who is giving the worst performance in this scene.
