    So…if you have several channels in a scan list, but haven’t keyed up any of the channels, will you even hear anything? Is scanning more for RF vs. a hotspot?

    Question for you -- my workplace uses 461.050 with three separate channels/talkgroups - 1, 2 and 3. (Listed this way on RadioReference.) Do (or can) DMR ham radios talk on our frequency then with separate talkgroups like that? Or, if someone was using a DMR radio and set it to 461.050, what would they hear, nothing? Everything? Can they listen to us or would they have to have some privacy/talkgroup entered somehow? I do security out there so was curious who can listen to us. Our radio system on RadioReference is listed as DMR Motorola Capacity Plus Single Site (TRBO). Thanks!

    I know this is an older video, but thanks. You touched on a lot of stuff that was missing in other peoples videos.. I do still have one question though. If I want to monitor a brandmeister talkgroup that has hardly any traffic, is there a way to do this without having to set a static talkgroup every time I want to monitor this talkgroup? ex; I'd like to be able to set my hotspot to TG 3023 or 3029 to monitor for calls for say an hour or 2, but would still like to be able to change talkgroups right from my radio or without messing with my dashboard. (Sometimes I bring my hotspot with me to family members houses and don't
    have access to my dashboard to change Static TGs)

    • @K0LWC
      @K0LWC  ปีที่แล้ว

      You could use a “4000 disconnect” command to drop the static TGs, but from there you’d be dependent on keying dynamics until you can reapply your statics.

    • @whenpigsfly3271

      One way to handle this is to set-up a timed static talkgroup in brandmeister before you leave on your trip. Combine this with a judicious use of an Rx group list.

  • @jdawgaz
    @jdawgaz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ok. To be crystal clear.
    If I add a static talkgroup to my hotspot, lets say 3104. I will ALWAYS hear traffic on that talkgroup even if I am dynamically linked to another talkgroup, lets say 91? Then, if I key up to talk which talkgroup will I actually be talking to? Both? Static? or Dynamic?

    • @K0LWC
      @K0LWC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re first question is correct. You’ll hear it no matter what is coming through dynamically. It won’t override and active transmission, but you’ll hear traffic when the dynamic TG unkeys.
      Your keyed talkgroup will be determined by your radio, not your hotspot.

  • @Munky332
    @Munky332 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What happens if someone on a repeater keys up a dynamic TG, isn't using it, and you want to swap it? do you have to wait for the repeater to drop it? or is there a way to "override" it so you can swap to another TG? Still trying to wrap my head around it, but its making more and more sense to me each day. Really can't wait to save up for a DMR radio.

  • @hankperritt5987

    Great video! Keep up the good work. Just to confirm, whether a hotspot has static or dynamic talkgroups assigned makes no difference in the operator's ability to transmit to a particular talk group, right? Hank Perritt K9KDF

    • @K0LWC
      @K0LWC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. Even if a hotspot has static talkgroups, you can dial in any talkgroup and bring it up dynamically. Static talkgroups just impacts what you’re hotspot and radio will hear when your radio is sitting idle/monitoring.

    Question: I am at a local repeater which is using TS 2 for dynamic talkgroup connection. TS 1 is used for normal repeater traffic, so I programmed another channel using TS2. Now, I have a Radioddity GD-77, how do I connect dynamically to a talkgroup using the rpt? 73 de WP3BM

  • @MrMarshalbeej

    Hi quick question I hope you can answer ? If you have multiple static Talkgroups on one Timeslot, what happens if you have QSO's happening on both talk groups? In this scenario I would have my radio set to one talk group, would that radio loose traffic if someone tx'd on one of the other statics on another hotspot/repeater? So an expample I would have TG 2350 and 23580 set as statics on one talk group, my radio is set on TG23580 and somebody else TX's on 2350 on a different repeater. I am using a PI-Star based duplex hotspot. And also same question applies to dynamic groups, if I had my radio on a dynamic group and some tx'd on one of my statics what would happen ?

    This is great information so far. What if I key up a dynamic talk group, then someone comes after me and keys up a different one. Does that time slot then move to only the last talk group keyed?

    My confusion right now is what decides the talk groups available on a zumspot. Is it the contacts programmed into the radio or some setting in pi-star that determines the available talk groups and which will be static? I am currently hearing Tac 310 on my zumspot and it never drops. Does that mean I have it set as static in pi-star somehow? Thanks for the video.

    • @K0LWC
      @K0LWC  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your static talkgroups are set via your Brandmeister self-care page. Is your hotspot listed on your Brandmeister profile? That’s where you’ll do it.

    • @alexanderlowe4236
      @alexanderlowe4236 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much. I didn't even realize the two were connected. Apparently the default setting makes whatever the last talk group you keyed up the current static talk group until you key up a different one.

  • @SirBeauJangles
    @SirBeauJangles 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    you didn't explain how an operator can tell if a talkgroup is one or the other type.... So you could assume it's static and on a repeater with little traffic, you'll go grey waiting on hearing anything - if it was actually dynamic...
    Conversely, you might key up on a static group and interrupt a qso if you're between overs... it'd be good to know how to tell the two types, and I can't see how to do that. I'm dead-new to all this, find the complexity quite - intimidating, almost?

    • @K0LWC
      @K0LWC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Repeater operators will usually publish what is static on time slots when you look up the machine, so you should be aware before every monitoring the machine.
      “Interrupting” is pretty commonplace on DMR. What I mean by that is seeing an op key up for a split second to hear what’s going on in the talk group. They won’t ID (this is controversial), but open it up and listen before putting out a call. You get used to it.

    Can you tell me why I would have Dynamic TGs on my Hotspot. As you have to key them up anyway how is that different from having talkgroups that I have added via codeplug - you have to key those up too. How does my hotspot present dynamic TGs to my radio?

    • @K0LWC
      @K0LWC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What hotspot are you using?
      You usually have to set up static talkgroups on the Brandmeister dashboard under your hotspot.
      You need to program talkgroups into your radio so the radio knows where to send your transmission. Without a talkgroup the radio would just route it locally and not across the Brandmeister network. The hotspot will read what Talkgroup the radio is sending and route it appropriately.
      Remember, dynamic talkgroups stay open to your radio for 15 minutes after the last transmission. After the 15 minutes the connection drops and you’d need to re-key. Setting a STATIC talk group on your hotspot allows you to hear anything that comes across without keying every 15 minutes. Static talkgroups allow you to monitor talkgroups you want, much like you listen to traffic across an analog repeater.
      Sorry, this is hard to explain via text. 😊
