Ravel's Sonatine is pure perfection, from the intricate first theme, through the deep and thick harmonies in the development section in the first movement and the masterful return to the first melody in the second mvt. all the way to the beautiful and epic chromatic descents in the final movement, from the first to last bar, it is flawless, and this perfomance does it absolute justice!
I really like the tempo of the first moment modéré. So many pianists just seem to rush through it without giving enough breathing space to bring out all the subtle details Ravel took pains to include
What a beautiful and endearing performance! I've heard this by many pianists, and I have to say this is one of my favorites. I can understand some of the comments about the tempo of the Modéré, but I think your tempo really brings out a tinge of melancholy not present in other performers' recordings. The whole performance is absolutely lovely!
Nothing wrong with the tempo to me.. it's so great to hear things slowed down a bit.. Eric Satie's works are many times played like it was a race. Reinbert de Leeuw is my favorite interpreter, doesn't speed everything up. Judith's arm and hand movements are so graceful, I could watch for a long time. Lovely tone too.
@@sitarnut I agree! I really dislike when performers put virtuosity ahead of the beauty of the music. Or just play too briskly for other reasons. I feel this is often the case with Beethoven's symphonies. I prefer the slower tempos of many of the recordings from the 60s and 70s. In this particular performance of Ravel's Sonatine, I can understand why some would prefer a quicker tempo. I, however, do not, and love the whole performance.
JUDITH PLAYS THIS MUSIC SO NATURALLY WITH FLOWING LINES AND SUPURB LARGESSE. IT IS AS IF THIS PERFORMANCE IS THE IDYLIC MESSAGE FOR THIS WORK OF MUSLCAL ART.
Beautiful. I am not technical with music. However, i do notice when the music is relaxing and beautiful and it becomes a pleasure to listen too :). Just wonderful Judith!
The performance is calm and poetic. Thank you, young lady. Your fingers are even more beautiful than you. For they are telling me the beauty of Ravel's music that I haven't learned before.
Wonderful performance! You do the 3rd movement so perfectly in my mind - the way I have always wanted to hear it. I have 10 recording of this piece (my favorite next to 'Tombeau de Couperin') and yours for the movement is easily the best :-)
As somebody currently struggling with the third movement, I must say I was very impressed by your left hand technique. Really enjoyed your interpretation of the Mouvement de Menuet as well. Honestly not a fan of the Modéré, it's lacking in fire and dynamic range a little, in my opinion. Great overall performance, though! Thank you! Really an extremely difficult piece to master, especially musically.
ugghh this is sooo GOOD. im learning the first movement and its definitely the hardest thing my teacher has ever given me. I love listening to this before i practice as kinda "artistry inspo" ;D
never heard this piece before. subscribed because she is a vegan pianist and I a vegan composer. so glad I found this video. she has an amazing touch. so light and fluent. she nails every note without sounding mechanical.
1. Modéré 0:00
2. Mouvement de menuet 4:37
3. Anime 7:38

That’s because most pianists are crazy showoffs
magnifiquement joué. Un jeu clair et sensible. Limpide comme la musique de Ravel.
Absolutely beautiful Judith...With my limited knowledge of music this stole my heart...❤️
Spectacular performance - extremely sensitive and thoughtful in every way!
As beautiful a rendition as is the pianist. Thank you for giving me this moment.
And life is worth living.

The crescendo in the first movement was perfect. I also love the tempo choices. A magic playing.

I’ve never been a fan of the Sonatine, until now that is. You bring out details which give life to this composition. Also, I love your wardrobe.

Thank you, Patrick. That's all that matters, really :)

Wonderful sound! Amazing performance!
wonderful masterpiece
Wonderful interpretation, and colors, great job !!!!!
Bravo Mme Engel !
Ravel partage parfois la clarté avec Mozart.
Outstanding performance!

MeToo really enjoy your style and interpretation
Haha but the “lacking in fire” quality is indeed what attracts lives who want to stay coooool during performance!

Love Ravel. Have always loved the part of this piece where the melody becomes "off-beat" like at 1:24.
Wonderful and beautiful!!
Wonderful 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Gut gespielt!
Fantàstica
BRAVO!!!!!!

Couldn't improve on ur interpretation any better!! The more we listen to others, we just might pick up their bad habits. Jouir!!
Sound off if Kaede Akamatsu sent you here.
I prefer it like this
