Squier Tele Mods: Don't Pay $41 For Plastic

  • I decided to start modding my Tele and the first thing to go is the pickgaurd. It's just not my personal taste. The brand I found on Amazon is cheap to buy, fits perfectly and is available in a bazillion colours. I'm NOT SELLING, OR AFFILIATED WITH THEM IN ANY WAY. Pay attention to the video for the brand name, and share it in the comments if you wish;-)

    What were you thinking when you decided a mint green pickguard went with a burgundy guitar? It was black all the way man.

      That's the thing.. when you buy your one, you can order the same cheap pickgaurd and put on the colour you personally like;-) Some people think I'm crazy for taking away the tortoise. No win;-)

      Your guitar, your choice, your style, your OCD, Your wallet, your labor and you can change it out anytime you wish. If it is past on, the next owner can decide if it stays or goes. It is all good and the way you want it. It's yours, I like it by the way. I shuttered when your buddy refinished the Clapper Shabby Chic Black but I felt inspired for him too. To each he own! It didn't cost me anything.

    I wonder if Fender used a veneer on the back of that guitar to hide the joint.? It might be a single piece, but on a squire I wonder if they'd do that.

      @jodybriggs1075 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fender use veneers on tons of their models. I had MIM sunburst that had a front and back veneer. There's even a bunch of forums of folks talking about stripping U.S fenders and it being 4/5/6 different pieces of wood. While it's nicer to give the illusion through clear finishes of one piece, some say composites makes stronger bodies as it's less likely to split or warp, but then there's the cork sniffers who claim they can 'hear the wood'. Who knows. Even 60's fenders were 2 and 3 piece.

    That's good info to know. There's no pickguard that's harder to fit than a Tele, due to the fact that it has to match the horn, neck pocket, pickup, bridge plate and control plate.
    You should ground that PG to the control plate with shielding tape (just place a strip of tape where it will make contact with both the shielding on the PG and the underside of the control plate). Tele pickguards are notorious for static electricity build-up, and it can get crackly when your fingers drag across the plastic while strumming. Drives me nucking futs!

      @boingwater 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jshortca1 maybe it makes it easier to mod? In case you want a humbucker cause the single coil is mounted to the scratchplate anyways (if I'm not mistaken). Better just getting the appropriate plate than routing out the body

    • @jayrx12
      @jayrx12 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Still, it's an affordable and convenient source for cheap parts for us Canadians who don't have ready access to GFS, Stewmac, Warmth etc. :) (I do find a lot of cheap fender parts for sale on Kijiji from time to time though, bought a few fender pickguards for $15 a piece)

    Fender are scam artists. You would think that the quality build of the squire would be as well made as all there Fender products, to the same QC as the usa and mexican. Its as if the the squire branding gives them licence to not give a fuck and that the poor quality means they sell more of there expensive ones. I mean i get charging more for quality components but general build should all be identical. It just justifies them chargin 2 grand for fnder USA as opposed to 800.00 or 900.00

    I dare not say that the appearance of the instrument somehow won from such a mod. Bad taste is not included in the list of 7 deadly sins.
    The end result is quite close to those absurd copies that the socialist countries made in the 70s.
    For that price you can get a PG that fits right down to the placement of the screw holes. You just have to ask for exactly what you need! I am completely satisfied with my 3-layer scratchplate.

  • @MarkWilliams-cs9qk
    @MarkWilliams-cs9qk 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You drilled the pickup holes out so the screw threads pass through the holes without catching... then you didn't put a spring on either pickup screw between the pick guard and the matching screw hole on the pickup. So what is keeping that pickup from sliding such that it's distance from the strings changes constantly? How can you adjust the pickup height and have it stay in place without a spring given that you reamed out the holes in the pick guard?

      The pickups of a made in USA Fender Tele are measurably better: more copper wire windings, thus a higher resistance (I'm talking about ±7.5 KOhms for the neck pickup for instance !), thus a higher output.
      So there are quality and sound (output) differences that can be compensated with a few aftermarket Fender USA pickups. They cost definitely much less than 400 bucks.
      Without these mods Squiers still sound pretty OK, just not as loud as the Fenders. You can also put your amp on a higher volume and/or use a compressor or a booster.

    does anyone have experience with kmise necks? how are they?

  • @joesatchton212

    Nelson: OT, but...were those strings old and in need of changing anyway? If not, wondering why you simply wouldn't re-use them after the pickguard install? On Floyds, OK, maybe some issues with re-using old strings in a similar situation. But for a bone simple machine like a Tele? It seems quite wasteful to ditch strings unless they really need it.
    I only ask because I have done exactly that kind of thing quite often historically, rightly or wrongly, for a very long time - originally starting when I was a kid because I was poor. lol
    But seriously, I'd like to know some honest views on that kind of thing from pros and other players...I'm curious.
    cheers and Happy 2017

      +Dean: Yep, that sure can happen sometimes. :)
      But back in my poor teen years, again, rightly or wrongly, I learned to leave a bit more slack for each string, which left some more winds around the tuning peg. Yes, I know...too many winds can lead to slippage, but as a poor kid, what the hell did I know? lol
      Actually, I still kind of string my guitars the same way, especially with my Floyd axes. Overkill on double-locking guitars, sure, but I still do leave a bit more winding around the pegs for each string. Since most breakages, especially on Floyds, occur at the bridge, for my non-professional needs, when I am feeling cheap, I can often re-use a snapped string because I have that additional slack. And also because I string the ball ends on the tuner side [yeah, I know some folks think that may be bad for the posts as well, but I have never had a problem across tons of Floyd guitars I have owned].
      I was just curious about Nelson's specific case here :)
      cheers and thanks!

    How about a FAT neck? I'm sick of this skinny neck, I have big hands and long fingers
    so the standard SUCKS. I need 1-3/4 or 1-13/16 @ the nut. Who does that?

    • @jamesoconnor1368
      @jamesoconnor1368 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      do you mean fat as width or more of a c shape? I think theres quite a few teles with real thick c shape necks. I know i played one, but it may have been custom, but it can defo be done

    Damn nice one Nelson. The only Squier I have is a 2011 vintage modified telecaster custom in black on black. If I could only get a mint green guard for one of them I'd love it. Unfortunately the Squier guard is different to the MIM which is different again to the MIA on these. :(

    • @WoodesosGuitarMods

      2011, might be okay on that Squier. I think the Tele's are all the same size and shape.

      Woodeso's Guitar Mods id be fine if it was the standard Tele pickguard but this one is the full face guard that has the same control layout as a les Paul, selector switch up top with 2 volumes and 2 tones down bottom. These types seem to be all different

    To buy a the same fender pickguard in New Zealand is $87. I know our dollar value is not the best but you can get the same one for as low as $15. Totally understand where your coming from on this one.👍

    when i saw the humbucker carving, it was clear for me, i'll totally put a humbucker in it. i don't use neck pickups on a tele, so it would be a interesting add for some versatility between the clear metallic sound and a more deep sound; probably a alnico2 would fit perfectly imho. what do you think ?

    Quick non related question, what are your views on the neck pickup being mounted to the pickguard vs to the body? If the former anywhere that ships worldwide and has the right screws for pickguard mounting.
