- We are on Rockaway Avenue between Chauncey Street and Bainbridge Street off of Broadway in the Brownsville Section of Brooklyn, where we see the back up Field Communications Unit of the FDNY as it responds to a run of a confined space. When there is a call of a confined space incident (someone trapped in an elevator, tunnel, etc...), there is a call for 3 engines, 2 ladders, a rescue or squad, and a Battalion Chief. Field Communications goes for radio purposes. Anyway, the regular FCU was away for drills, so this one was sent in its place. FCU is housed with Engine 233 and Ladder 176, as well as the older, back up to the back up of the FCU, which is a big 1985 Mack. This version of the FCU is a 2002 American LaFrance. Not really a train horn. It's a really awful airhorn that sounds like a dying elephant. A train horn would be much louder

A Sprinter was a Dodge,( when it was owned by Diamler) but it's a Mercedes and a Freightliner product.

It is a Mercedes Sprinter here. The one you see in the vid is the Freightliner, which is a Mercedes subdivision. These things are actually pretty good and will drive circles around any Dodge RAM van or Ford F-Series. I drove all of them, and although the Sprinter comes with a Diesel engine, it's much much better. Sorry Fanboys.
American fire engines rock, no doubt about that. Here, the engines are different, because the requirements differ a lot. But sometimes we could use some synergy effects :) Here in Germany emergency services start to use the American style sirens now, which really is cool and getting attention. The Sprinter is small and nimble and fast, and I guess there are places such as NYC where they are not that bad.
They should have mounted Martin horns on it! After all, it's a rebadged Merc...

As far as I can tell, their biggest disadvantage is that they're expensive. My uncle has one as an RV, and it gets about the same gas mileage as my car... utterly amazing IMO.

Probably because they don't use that truck often. Happens where I work too, especially when we have membership meeting and only 10-15 parking spots based on the time.

but to be hinest even as it doesn't look that cool, the old Sprinters are some high quality vehicles and are still strong even as they are in service for years. Our FD runs a 20 year old Spinter, and it runs perfectly

It's a American built Sprinter with Dodge badges. The American vans is about to be canceled and going to be replaced by European vans; for example Ford E-series is replaed by Ford Transit in 2014. But I'm not sure about the other vans.
Is the Sprinter the actual Field Comm unit or is that the personnel carrier that meets the big unit at the scene?

Howcome FDNY apparatus have such random numbers for their rigs? I would guess they would correspond with the station. But the ladder/truck and engine don't even correspond, housed in the same station...
Freightliner, but the Dodge, Mercedes, and Freightliner sprinter chassis are all the same. Freightliner is commercial grade, Dodge is more consumer level, and Mercedes is more luxurious, but it's the same truck.

I actually didn't experienced missing power at hills, and we do have some quite steep ones in our city, up to 18%. But for the case one of our ambulances seems to have not enough power we simply do some professional chip tuning. Most of our ambulances are built by Fahrtec, Ambulanz mobile and Wietmarscher; and yeah here also most ambulance, I'd say 70%, are box ambulances as well

Sprinter ambulance usually have further advantages, e.g. they aren't as wide, which makes it easier to squeeze through traffic, and they are also lighter, they can reach a certain speed faster than a heavy ambulance. Across the country (Germany in my case) I'd say more than 95% of all ambulance are Sprinters, in my city every single ambulance is a Sprinter

Bubu der Böse nein es ist wirklich ein Freightliner. Achte mal auf die Frontschürze ;) ist zwar sonst mit Benz identisch aber hat glaub ich auch einen Freightliner-Motor ;)
