    I am new to this and would have liked a bit of tutorial on how to make the hide glue.

    • @SwiftwoodBows
      @SwiftwoodBows  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lately I have been using titebond 2 wood glue. It is not as "primitive" but it is easier to use and gives very good results. I haven't done a hide glue turorial yet. There are some other good videos showing the process that you could search for in the meantime. Good luck

      Swiftwood Bows is there a reason to use titebond 2 as opposed to 3?

    where did you get the metal shave horse, or is that something you make as well?
    Looks like a nice one and a guy wouldn't have to worry about weathering as much so as one made with 2X6 lumber. Thanks in advance and have a blessed weekend sir.

    If you do not have access to Hide glue, can you use Tite bond III ??

    • @SwiftwoodBows
      @SwiftwoodBows  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, absolutely. I actually use titebond II and III more than I use hideglue. I wanted to show hideglue because it's a bit more complicated of a process. I should have been more clear in the video about other glue options.

    Can you put snake skin over rawhide? Thx!

    • @SwiftwoodBows
      @SwiftwoodBows  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yessir. I do it all the time. I scuff the back of the rawhide a bit with some 80 grit and I make sure the edges of the rawhide are trimmed higher up on the back so the snake skin totally covers it on the edges

    • @robertsteffan6835

      @@SwiftwoodBowsDo I need to die or color the rawhide so snakeskin color and pattern looks even? The rawhide goes from Brown to a cream color in places. I'm going to put diamondback skins on. Thx again!

    • @SwiftwoodBows
      @SwiftwoodBows  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertsteffan6835 my advice is to dye the rawhide blackwith leather dye after you scuff it with the sandpaper. Black really makes the rattler Skins pop. Keep the dye away from the very edges so there isn't a dye line at the edges of your snakeskin.

    Would regular epoxy or resin glue work? I'm planning on making a Bingham kit longbow, and I'm wondering if i really need hide glue.

    • @SwiftwoodBows
      @SwiftwoodBows  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't use epoxy but wood glue works great. I wish I had mentioned this in the video. I often use titebond3 or titebond2.

      @SwiftwoodBows  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would do a little extra research about putting skins on carbon limbs. I'm sure it can be done but there might be some extra considerations. I don't think hide glue would be the best choice for that. Good luck. Let me know how it turns out.

    what tanning process did you use on the snake skins ive tried glycerinon some but they would never completely dry.

    • @SwiftwoodBows
      @SwiftwoodBows  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The skins should not be tanned. They are simply air dried. Skin the snake, tack out the skins and let them dry. Tanned skins do not glue down well.

    did you tiller the bow before applying the skin

    • @SwiftwoodBows
      @SwiftwoodBows  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did. The snake skins go on after I've done just about everything else. I don't want to risk damaging the skins while I'm doing work on the bow. Plus I don't want to waste the skins if the bow doesn't turn out during tillering. You can see the whole process of making that bow on this video. :) th-cam.com/video/yTfxEnaGOqw/w-d-xo.html

    Does the snake skin work like rawhide or is it just decorative.

    • @SwiftwoodBows
      @SwiftwoodBows  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't add any substance or protection. It's jist for decoration and camouflage. Maybe a thick pyrhon skin could add some protection. Snake skin is also good for keeping water off of a sinew backing.

  • @theguywitheyebrows
    @theguywitheyebrows 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    thsi is exactly the video i needed to watch to snakeskin a bow. how about snakeskin on top of sinew backing? would that work, or would that cause the snakeskin to shred apart?

    • @SwiftwoodBows
      @SwiftwoodBows  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you found it helpful. Snakeskin works great over a sinew backing. Helps to protect it from water as well. If it's super rough you can sand the sinew down a bit before you add the snake skins.

    Thank you for this video. Iwould like to ask you if the skins you were using still had the scales on.
    Here, were i live in Costa Rica, i find a lot of rattle snakes and i have to kill them arround my house to prevent an accident. And their scales are very thick. I don´t know if letting this scles there or pick them out for backing a bow.
    And another: Do you have to retiler after backing with the skin?.
    Thank you.

    • @SwiftwoodBows
      @SwiftwoodBows  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good questions. Here is how I prepare the skin. I cut the skin up the middle of the belly and peel it off the snake. I tack it out on a board to dry. don't treat it or tan it with anything, just let it air dry. Once it's dry it can be rolled up and stored in a plastic bag or frozen. When you're ready to use it follow the steps in the video. I remove the scales once it's glued onto the bow and dried again. The skin under the scales can have little flaps but those are different than the actual scales which flake off.
      You don't usually have to retiller after you back with snake skin. It doesn't add any strength to the bow. Be careful to let the bow dry out completely after you apply the skins. If you start bending the bow to soon the moisture you introduced to the bow could possibly cause some set.

    To those that are new to backing skins. This video is great, but you will, after doing it , will become much faster than this,once you learn. It's much easier than you think. I am not a phenom , and I'm much faster than this. This video can fool you, cause it may be made by someone with o.c.d.. I do believe that making video to show how to do things is great, but don't scare people away with excessive and nonessential shit.
