For all the internet experts, fabric works, and it’s far easier to pull weeds from mulch and on top of the fabric than deep rooted weeds in dirt. We have used cardboard or newspaper under the fabric and it works great. Still needs once a month maintenance but far better than before. It just not the greatest for soil health long term. We recently switch to pine bark and use 4-6 inches deep and very few weeds. So far it’s been the same or better than fabric.
It absolutely does not work. You can tell the "experts" who've maintained a bed or two for a year and promote fabric because they never witness the mess it makes, from the actual landscapers who take pride in their work and maintain beds long term.
Yup. I pull weeds for a living and it doesn't work, or at least not well. I just started a job laying that garbage down too, in nothing but rocks, so I have to clear put 6x70 rocks, lay and nail it down, then get the rocks back onto the garbage. At least I'm making more than when I pull weeds 🤷♀️

I love my landscape fabric. Yes i get occasional weeds, usually after a year, but they're not growing through the fabric. Yes, you’ll have to cut an “X” where you want to place the new plants. Then dig the hole (put that soil in a bucket so it doesn’t mix in with the mulch on the ground). Cut that little extra fabric from the “X” after you’ve completely planted. Then spread the mulch around that. It’s a little awkward but worth it.
