A beautiful rendition of this classic song! Frisell is a marvelous guitarist, and this Steve Andersen guitar sounds amazing in his hands. This arrangement is not that difficult to play, but it is the timing and accents that create the magic.
You know he knows theory, harmony, and the guitar inside and out but every time I hear or see him play it's as if he just discovered some hidden secret for the first time.
I also wonder just how good Bill Frisell really is but I nearly always find myself listening to his pieces to the end. He does have something that captures my attention and he has that Bill Frisell sound.
He is a genius! He is right up there with the all the other past geniuses of the jazz guitar. But he actually has more going for him and that is his composing, he is just as much a great guitarist as any of the "old masters" and to that we add his "artistry". What he does transcends the usual "qualifications" of a jazz guitarist which till not very long ago meant almost just being a good instrumentalist. Think about it, almost none of the "old masters" were as much composers as Bill is. And beside he is a huge influences on all the other younger guitarists. I can't think of any other guitarist who came up with a more interesting and "viable "way of modernizing jazz guitar.
I love the clean fretboard sans markings, wonder if there any on the neck? I studied classical guitar and really appreciated the lack of fret markings, it helped me learn the neck when I was a 'teen.
+matty p And they look like round wounds. I got nothing against people buying expensive strings like Thomastiks. I personally hate the sound they give ME. I put that money into picks instead. Gemstone, and everyone says I have a bell like tone... I use ProSteel D'addario 13s on the E B G and 12s on the rest... Sound is in the inner ear and in the fingers. No guitar, pick, amp, or string set can change that. Invest in your ears instead :)
Bill's playing is much like his manner of speech to my ears; somewhat halting and tentative. His phrasing is more like little bubbles of melody rather than a steady flow. Once I was used to it, it became quite charming and beautiful. But I can see how someone hearing this might think he wasn't quite familiar with the tune and was figuring it out as he went along. I prefer this more improvisational approach as opposed to a traditional recital of these old tunes, so it works for me and in that sense I would qualify it as jazz.
Jeff Stanley When I hear Frisell play a standard like this, it sounds like he's inventing music, the song and the instrument for the first time. He always makes me hear a tune as if it were brand new. There aren't many musicians like him. He's an extraordinary artist and a spectacular guitarist without boundaries. He never plays to expectations.
Success is normally and always should be what you have created as an artist and not just how technical you are. Bill has created such a huge body of unique work in his 30 year career, I wonder why he isn't far more successful!

A master at filling the maximum amount of space with the mimimum amount of notes
Well said
I can't stop listening to this elegance. Six string valium.
Adult, thoughtful, and a sense of gentle whimsy never far away.
Tremendous -- always a fresh perspective from Bill.
Beautiful playing and what a gorgeous guitar as well!
i LOVE these videos... possibly my favourite things on all of youtube. Please do more!!!
How one can even come to the idea of disliking this ?!!...
This is the part of Bill's playing I love the most! Incredible musician!
Very relaxed and soulful rendition of this beautiful song! well done!
Sounds so fresh and genuine, like an impromptu, I could listen to this hunderds of times and find it new each time.
I just love his music and his unique way of playing Guitar. Genius!! Thanks só much, Mr. Bill Frisell
Beatiful arrangement and playing!
Kind of a Monk feel to it. Superb.
my favorite guitar player
Keith Stack definitely one of my favorite guitar players too. I met him two days ago and his such a nice person.

Absolutely Beautiful!
Lovely !. Would That More Young Guitarists Were “Put In The Way”, Of Terrific Music Such As This.
Great Respect And Greetings From Scotland.
Bill's timing is actually quite extraordinary.
Felt the notes like you were breathing them out. And the chord walks you do to weave the melody... You're just the man :-D
Un Genio Gershwin Abrazandote que Hermoso y tierno
Bill is genius as always... that guitar is amazingly gorgeous, wow!
Bill is a mellow but simply complex monster. He is just so...conscious. And Steve Andersen makes great sounding and looking guitars.
i can never tell if bill frisell is hugely overrated or a genius. i mean, i say that as a fan. his style is so enigmatic.
Def would not call him a genius by any stretch, but he is really good.
Ratings mean nothing. Neither does genius status. It's just what you make with your instrument and even that does not need to be quantified.
I also wonder just how good Bill Frisell really is but I nearly always find myself listening to his pieces to the end. He does have something that captures my attention and he has that Bill Frisell sound.
He plays with the blood

Magic !
Brilliance.
Just about as better than great as it gets.
beautiful
Superb Bill here!
Amazing!!!
I'm struggling to play the Durante arrangement of this great tune.....but this is equally challenging....lovely.

just gorgeous.
Fitna steal some of this
Bill ❤
Good things get simpler with time.
Hey does anyone know which Andersen model this is, I believe its a double top but is anyone certain?
It is an Andersen Model 17. It's not a double-top.
Wow ..... I'll say it in Juvenile Slang "You are the Bomb". Great job!!
Amazing! What guitar is it ? 😮
Think it's an Andersen Model 17
Kind of a sad sounding melody, a long ago memory
any idea what strings he uses on his archtops?
He uses D'addario strings across the board generally. malt is bein a twat
+matty p And they look like round wounds.

This is not naked city! :p
For some reason when I think of Bill Frisell, I don't think of jazz guitar. Not sure why he's so successful. And this performance doesn't help.
What the hell are you talking about????
Do you understand English???

Are they nylon strings he’s playing with !!

what the hell happened to your hair bro ..??? love always
SERIOUSLY...'''AVERAGE'.....dont know what the fuss is about....my opinion
Bill Frisell is a true creative and supreme genius (This guitar does not give justice to his playing. it sounds too thin)
557 like :D :D
no se oye
sorta monkish
Pretentious and oh so "precious". Looks like 14 Joe Pass fans stopped by.
