My grandma gave me this recording on a cassette tape when I was a little (weird) kid and I listened to them very often. I later picked up the flute. 20 years later, I just started taking lessons again and I study these fantasies again that are engraved in my mind. Thanks grandma :)

Absolutely amazing. People say he always plays too fast. I disagree. With the mastery of his technique and tone and musicianship Maestro Rampal brings everything to this piece that is needed. I've performed it also and he was my inspiration. R.I.P.

I owned this LP in the '60's
Lent it to my buddy David Werner who taught at Pacific High School and lived in a tree house at the bottom of Portola State Park-- which tree house blew down in a storm, with my LP on the record player within... it's been half a century since I last heard these THANKS EVERSO!!
Sometime around 1970 (when I was in college) I found these 12 works in a music store and purchased them. I only had one more semester that I had to continue flute lessons with the flute instructor who was an oboist with perfect pitch. Essentially I bought these for my own enjoyment as 1) I was majoring in piano, 2) I was tired of the oboist with perfect pitch annoying the crap out of me, and 3) I did not want to just throw away the roughly 7 + years of flute lessons I had before college.
Ok
I wonder how many annoying teachers ruined or nearly ruined whatever enjoyment students had in their music... I had one. It took me forty years to realize how he changed the course of my life. I don't regret the direction I took as a result, but I do regret giving up the violin.

Absolutely BRILLIANT!! Rampal's playing of these were the recordings I listened to most when I wss working on them. What joy. Hearing these recordings takes me back to my teenage years.

There is only THE best flutist I have ever heard and it is Jean-Pierre Rampal! Thank for posting this recording, I have played these Fantasias on alto recorder since 1969 and grew up on them, wish I had this beautiful Rampal recording then.
My neighbor growing up studied with him back in the 1980s. Amazing.
What do you mean by "studied with him"? In person or just listening to his CDs and trying to mimick the Rampal's sound?

Before Pahud, was Galway and before Galway was Jean-Pierre Rampal who peaked in popularity at the same time as the 33 1/3 long-playing record. You can also find his name as editor on many of the publications of flute music by International Mus. Co.
Same situation here. It´s just great to have stumbled upon this. Just here of him for the first time today (Rampal).

rimane sempre il sospetto che i formidabili tecnici del suono abbiano messo il turbo alla registrazione,non sarebbe certo la prima volta.Senza togliere nulla al magico Rampal vorrei sentire queste fantasie dal vivo.Il disco dovrebbe essere un Denon giapponese.

I'm not a violinist, so no. (I'm a pianist.) But I have a great recording of all the flute fantasies and violin fantasies played on violin by Peter Sheppard Skaerved--and on a violin built in 1570 by Andrea Amati!

Why 40 dislikes?
Could be to do with tempo. A bit faster then others play.
I dislike because nobody plays baroque like that anymore. He plays it like romantic music. It doesn’t breeze. Even articulations are wrong.
On modern flute, Pahud is much more authentic.

👎🏻Technique éblouissante mais quel ennui, qui confine bien souvent même avec le "hors sujet" ! Toujours cet orgueil sonore comme pour dire "regardez, écoutez, c'est moi, c'est moi "je" et encore moi, moi, moi Rampal... à en perdre la magie sonore pour tomber dans le culte vulgaire de la personnalité. Pour vous en convaincre, écoutez Yasmine Choi ou mieux encore Dorothee Oberlinger...
