Ayuk was doubled _a lot_. I agree he didn't play extremely well either, but he moved LBs and safeties in zone defense by his gravity. I think that's Shanahan way of "punishing" him, making him the bait in most plays, or the obvious first option (That Purdy is clever enough to not take).
Ron Wolf brought this mindset to GB. 1994 QB camp was Favre, Brunell, Detmer, & Warner. QB coach was Mariucci. Reid was offensive line & tight ends. Gruden was receivers coach. This list goes on!

IMHO Shanhan is good at schemes. He is an average to above average play caller. He should be an Offensive Coordinator as he is not a great head coach. He just doesn't look at all phases of the game equally like the great ones do. HE thinks you don't need a good offensive line to win which is crazy, especially in the playoffs. He overplays all his great players so they get injuries that could potentially be avoided and they wouldn't be gased by the playoffs when they clearly have skilled backups. Management has no managed the cap well. I disagree that Purdy can't play better. He is only into his 3rd year, has only had one true offseason and he will get better with more experience. I don't think he is near his ceiling yet and I don't why people are still so negative about him.

In my opinion, we are seeing a 49er offense that is shifting away from Purdy conforming into it the offense to the offense having to conform to Purdy. When the key players return, the offense will be very different. They will have to adjust to Purdy’s style of play.
