I've had mine for over 30 years. You have a beautiful radio. You didn't show off the SSB, another very well done feature both upper and lower sidebar, which will also sync.
The companion active antenna greatly increases the sensitivity, is smaller than the radio, with a long tiny cable that allows the antenna to be place in a window. The active antenna is powered by the radio's batteries or the radio's plug in power supply.
Replacement ribbon cabel and brighter led lights are available, for a pittance.
The sharp corners of the ribbon cable pass through can be rounded to prevent stress on the cable.
You have a great radio. Enjoy!

Had mine new since 2000, with known issues like a broken battery lid and the rubbery paint getting sticky and wearing off. There is also some contact problem with the power switch, causing the display light to go on and off when on AC-power. I Recently bought a similar size Sony XDR-P1DBP which is capable of receiving DAB+. To my surprise, that little thing also performs much better on FM than the ICF-SW100. Probably because of its digital signal processing. It has much, much better selectivity and sensitivity. Besides that, it sounds way better and the display backlight is much improved. The '100' just sounds thin. Still I'm going to keep the SW100 for old times sake and the occasional short wave listening.

Nice review. Just replaced the ribbons on my pre-notched version. Then cut a notch making it look as neat as possible to replicate the notched version. Also nipped off the top 1/4 of the battery spring to ease the strain on the battery hatch surround. The radio automatically switches from 9kHz to 10kHz depending on your time zone selection !!!!! How’s that for thinking by Sony. Got two more incoming as spares.

Hi. Thank you for this video.I agree about the SW100. As an update to the above, unfortunately, my SW100 is now starting to show its age. When I changed its batteries, recently,, a small piece of the casing above the battery clasp cracked and fell off. However, its still working reinforced by a high tech rubber band (non-dsp) 73s and GDX

Sadly Sony has fallen so far since those days. It's like they have just given up.
I think they totally lost the plot back in the early 2000s. It's too bad Sony And Panasonic don't reintroduce these classics they would sell a TON of them at very profitable prices.

THE SECRET with this radio and others from the 90s, is to use an exact external antenna for the desired frequency. You can use the SSB feature to cancel noise with success sometimes, on the AM frecuencies. The lack of precise bandwidth control is a problem if you want to receive CW. This was a really handy radio if you needed to receive messages from home when you was in "The Field" as an intelligence operator (number stations).

Did you sell it yet? I just picked up one from Europe and it has the “notched” area which supposedly is the newer corrected ribbon version, however, if you push the lid back too far, it cuts out and resets itself. Plus the light in the display is way too dim to read. Do you know anyone that can fix this reasonably?

    sony: ICF-SW100 (ICFSW100); typical failure
Early production samples of this radio tend to fail, a copper ribbon cable connecting the lower and the upper part of the radio will be bent repetitively over a very sharp edge of the lid. After a while, the copper ribbon cable connections are likely to break, some of the keys will become inoperational, sometimes this will happen even to the on/off - button. Rarely the signal ribbon cable will brake.
You might recognize the early ICF-SW100 sets by the copper connector, that can bee seen in the gap, in later models produced after autumn 1997, You see a black plastic cover over the connector and the lid mould has been changed.
You might try to repair Your set using a file to dull the sharp plastic edges where the connector will have to get past. There has been a Sony repair kit for these early models with a different lid mould.

Hi from Scotland. Thank you for this. I recently bought a SW100 in reasonable condition. It was the later version with the notch to avoid the breaking ribbon cable problem. You also have to be very careful of the battery holder lid. It is known to break off with the batteries springing out! Nevertheless, it is an amazing little radio. In my opinion, a shrunken 2001D. I have posted a few videos of it on my channel. One little oddity I have noticed is that, contrary to what is printed in the instructions, if you extend the telescopic aerial, it certainly improves AM/MW reception! Did you notice this? Thank you and 73s

Be careful with the battery compartment door. It and particularly the housing in the case above it is fragile. I recommend that you do not store the batteries in it when it is not in use.. It's a bad design made worse by plastic becoming brittle with age. Despite this it's a great SW receiver. MW/LW not so good because of the small ferrite aerial. 73s

What is the best arrangement for 40-80 meter reception using a standard HF dipole on this radio? Do you use the plugin the auxiliary site active antenna site? Clip on to the antenna? etc. I have the extended antenna that clips on. Too bad I erased some of the print on the buttons when I used with mosquito repellent on my hand. Otherwise, mine is practically new and has been sitting in the closet for @ 20 years. I bought it in London Heathrow airport on impulse. I couldn't resist.

I’ve got the Sony ICF 2010, the Sony 100 or you see in this video which I don’t think I could ever sell, GE super radio, a Grundig 800 and a Grundig G5. It’s difficult to sell things that you really love but I was blessed to get a really good radio and for the first time I actually bought one brand new LOL! I could certainly give a good review of my experience with it though that’s for sure!

It’s able to do a lot of things Very well. This wasn’t a long term review. It wasn’t meant to be. Overall, in the Sony line, the SW 100 in my opinion is better than the 55, better than I believe even the 77. Just a little below the IC 2010... and that’s saying an awful lot. Your point?? Because I didn’t do a one hour review on everything this does?
I have this radio as well as the 2010. Many others. Also many ham radio Transceivers. I don’t do long video reviews on ANY transceiver because there’s already plenty of content out there on those.
But I do give a short overlook of the receiver/transceiver and answer questions live on the shows for people that might have questions about them.
This channel is FAR different than it was when this video was made.

The ribbon cable or both cables between the 2 parts of the clamshell of the radio. They may have either a short or a break in them.
This is a common problem to this radio unfortunately.
The parts can be available I believe on eBay. Search for the ribbon connecting cable for the ICF SW 100. A link is here for the kit. www.ebay.com/itm/Repair-Kit-Parts-for-Sony-ICF-SW100-Professional-/123418999177?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0
There are instructional videos how to replace them on TH-cam.
Of course, it could be something else, but that’s where I would start because this is a common problem with this radio.
Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

That could be the problem. Radios it sit for a long time like any electronic device can have capacitor failure especially. Charged up energy finally leaks out and the capacitor is destroyed.
The ribbon cables are a known and real issue with this radio however. It’s something to look into for sure before sending it out to a repair person.

There are many Sony ICF SW 100’s available right now on EBay.
Just be sure to ask questions about the radio, such as “have the ribbon cables been replaced?“ As well as “does the battery door close properly, and has the battery spring been trimmed down?“
Those are two really important questions to ask about this radio as they are two areas that are known problems as the radio has aged. Good luck on your search!

    • @HamRadioLiveShow
      @HamRadioLiveShow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Does it work?? Verify it’s in working order because that’s really really cheap for one of these. These have two issues that you have to be careful of, One is the ribbon cable that connects the two parts, the second is the battery door. Sony put a spring that was a little too highly tensioned for the battery. Most owners cut back on the first part of the coil so it doesn’t put so much pressure on the battery cover.
Make sure the battery door is not broken and get a video of the radio actually working. That would be my advice. An SW 100 is an excellent Radio but it’s worth a lot more than $50 so there’s something wrong there maybe. If not you’re getting a heckuva by!!!
