Manufacturers promote all the tech but never state IP ratings, nor do they consider this in the design. I would say that bike has been designed for a desert, very poor.
Good morning Dave,, on all the electrical connections I have use Dielectric grease to help keep water out and eliminate green connections.
Hi, that’s a good idea but only use a small about as it’s attracts dust and rubbish
Considering the price of most e-bikes ,manufacturers should be taken to task regarding the selling of them in the uk with such p##s poor water ingress protection.
The connectors they use are not even fit for purpose 😡
My husqvarna had these random shut downs, particularly on bumpy descends. I found out it there was some play on battery (and some rattle on descends). Just moved the upper battery mount a couple milimiters down and battery was more tight. Never had the issue again for the last 2 years.
great video thanks . i got so fed up with riding my orbea wild in winter in the mud i bought a e gravel bike to ride on the road . last winter all the roads were flooded
Gotta say mate I have no interest in bikes at all, but absolutely love watching your videos and seeing you get to the bottom of things! Keep up the good work!!
Nice video Dave and may I say, nice to see you have good taste in tools. I have the same Wera torque wrench. Cheers
Good video, the Toughbook is blast from the past
Surely that's not correct? It's like replacing the wiring harness on a car when a connector is the only fault? Or replacing 4 tyres on a car when only 1 has a puncture.
Always seems a really bad design or decision to put poorly sealed connectors and motors right where most of the water hits a bike, and then be surprised when it plays up .
This puts me off throwing a large amount of money at an Ebike for the time being.
Hi thanks for watching and your comments, I can understand that
Love watching your videos buddy. Ebikes are the coolest invention of our time it makes travelling way more fun much more than our cars,
Great video Dave !
i got 4k miles last 2 year on a bosch motor, 3k of those last 8 months, and I live on the Oregon coast. Makes me wonder what people are doing to get water past the seals. The diamondback union 2 has a nice case built for the motor though, I check the bearings last week and they look and feel like new. I think some people are either using pressure washers, or not coving their motor when its on the back of their car in a heavy rain. I don't own a car so that never is a problem for me.
Love your videos, propper job! - will pop into your shop at some point just to say heyup if nowt else
On that model (I have one), it’s easy to keep the moisture out by putting electrical tape along the 4 edges of the battery cover where it touches the frame (on the outside 😅) and continuing a few cm more along the wee gap between the motor and the frame. Now, it’s really quick and easy to do once you’ve done it a couple of times. It looks terrible. It shouldn’t need to be done. But after 3000 km of 4 season riding in Yorkshire’s best slop (Wharny and all the rest), the inside of the frame still looks brand new and I never have any visible moisture (or issues with moisture). The wee holes by the steerer tube for the cables (x3) somehow don’t let water in even in Yorkshire tornadoes 🤔 Anyway, my point? Well, moving beyond the question of ‘why should this be necessary?’, I have zero electrical issues with this awesome do it all e-bike (just back from Revs today 🎉).
no doubt an expensive replacement part that should have been more rugged....
First thing I notice is the very poor sealing of the battery/connector assy, bad design in my eyes
Not really. Ever checked how your car engine is shielded against rain? It isn’t. There will always be some water intrusion and this design allows the water to get out again.
The car battery is in the engine compartment, which is sealed by the hood and the bottom covers. Rain does not get in.
Nice video. I have the same bike. It's awesome, I am thinking maybe removing my harness and adding some weather proofing after watching this. The motor could use a good clean out also. Maybe next deep clean day 🤔
Hi thanks for watching and your comments, it’s tricky because you need water and moisture to escape you don’t want to be trapping it in
Another brilliant video Dave, does that the little tool that you used to take the connections off suitable for all motors especially Bosch and can you provide a link for it please
hi, Shimano TL-EW300 E-tube Di2 plug tool, its only for shimano plugs
That seatpost is dying inside
I have a Samebike lo26 11 750w
The screen when sunny day is impossible to see. Is there anything I can do. Or you can do
I. E change screen or filter
you would think a bike that expensive would have at least an IPX6 water resistance rating
I has this issue with my Trek Rail, after replacing Bosch system and frame twice we concluded it was the connectors getting damaged as the connectors are fixed with no strain relief so getting damaged when frame flexes
Gday mate great video 👍👍 , genuine questions here - is a bicycle mechanic is it s registered trade and you have to do a 4-5 year apprenticeship?
Since e-bikes are relatively new largely, what training/schooling have you or majority of bike mechanics done on electric motors / auto electronics?
Do the motor manufacturers give all bike mechanics schooling on these motors & tech involved?
I myself am a qualified motorcycle mechanic and we used to do all electrical diagnostic in house and only sent components that need re wiring to a specialist motorcycle auto electrician!
I personally don’t ride e-bikes but I have a lot of mates that do and from what problems I’ve seen the shops are just replacing components, not repairing or correctly diagnosing !
You’ve probably guest what I’m getting at , is that the massive influx of e-bikes and tech involved are the bike mechanics qualified/ had schooling and are they the best option to repair / diagnose e-bike problems or should my mates just find a quality auto electrician/ tech as surely there’s a massive call for this ?? Cheers 🍻 from Oz
Hi, thanks for your questions. I will answer them in order.
There a 3 levels of certification, they are a recognised body called Cytech. A fully trained mechanic would hold Cytech 3. Its normally done over 2 years.
Companies like Bosch Brose and Shimano who are the main motor providers hold training sessions either on line or at one of their premises. You have to be a registered dealer to be able to use their diagnostic software, work under their warranty schemes and receive support. Shimano you can get their software by download, you dont need to be a dealer to use but get get warranty work and parts you do. again getting new components either to sell to the public at a trade price you need to be trade.
Motor repair is a speciality job and not many do it as they are very tricky to repair and easy to damage when working on them..
Dave
@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic thanks for your honest response mate 👍, much appreciated 😎. It just really annoys me this throw away society & these motor companies not making electrical components , gears & all other parts readily available is just ludicrous ! No wonder the price is rediculously high on e-bikes as clearly the motor manufacturers are /have worked all the warranty claim costs into the reatail price ! God help people once there out of warranty 🤬👎 Cheers 🍻 Mick
Over the last few week I've had lights fail /lcds playing up 😅 ,the usual 🇬🇧 British weather troubles 😅
My issue is a little different my wife and I were out cycling on our Mustache Samedi electric tandem which is fitted with a Bosch cx motor and two 500watt HR batteries we love to bits ,we have own it 4.5 years covered over 5000 miles for some reason one 1 of our 2 batteries seems to have failed the display shows battery icon no % tried pressing the button on the battery nothing lights up also tried charging without success.
Hi, the battery needs to be tested, you need to find a bosch dealer with the battery test equipment
Dave, it's been 30c for a week now here on the Rock of the west of Canazeula. Can't stop for trail touch ups ffs
@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanicI freeze the better part of a bottle then wrap it in bubble wrap. Usually 2+ hours. Going to pack another one though. Cheers!
This is exactly the issue that I’ve had for 6 months now. Did the new wiring harness fix the issue or is it too soon to tell?
Hi thanks for watching and your comments, too soon to tell
In your opinion, would it be a good idea to put a small amount of dialectric grease to each connector to minimize corrosion? I realize putting too much can compromise the weather seal I'm just talking a small coat
I say to everyone even though it says waterproof put a bag /crisp packet over the lcd screen unit if its bar mounted/kit, I've lost at least 4 over a decade due to heavy downpours. 😅 🇬🇧
I got a bosch 501010 error twice in the last couple of months. I asked bosch what the error was but they have not responded. Anyone know what this error is?
Hi, this is the description of the error 501010, "Motor control error. Possible effects: No motor support. System remains switched on."
dealer visit im afraid.
My shimano e8000 gave E010 error when the battery connector negative terminal was corroded causing poor connection. Intermittent failure. Took quite a while for me to find the cause.
Glad you found the problem, they have their own little brains
Mine has an audible knock on every rotation under load. Bosch CX gen 4 never been wet only 740 miles from new.
Hi Simon, double check your crank arm bolts for tightness and the chainring/ chain guard for free running and side to side play on the crank arms, the motor spins at least 20 full revolutions for your 1 rotation of the crank arm. If nothing seems out of place book it in to your dealer
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic Thanks. Found the problem. Bad pedal thread in left crank arm. Tricky to find as the pedal looks fine on inspection but knock is apparent under load.
Was this a warranty repair or did the customer have to pay for the new harness?
Is it not just going to do the same again?
Hi, thanks for watching, yes it could if he rides in such extreme conditions
diy kit is better, waterproof controller, and connectors :D i am glad i did a diy e-bike :) and not buy a expensive e--bike from a bike shop :) can make 3 bikes for that price.
My e bike cracks without warning. Thank god for lifetime warrenty. Not 2 years in and im onto my 4th frame
Thats not good and not very helpful or confidence inspiring.
The more I learn about ebikes and their never ending issues the more sure I become that I will never waste my money on one. If I ever get too old or fat to ride my Orange I will just give up and go to the pub instead.
After being on a training course with Bosch, it really put me off having any E-MTB.
Well, how often will someone post that everything is working fine? Or about a service of a totally fine bike? E-bikes have more ways to break down than bio-bikes but this doesn’t mean that they aren’t reliable.
My main problem with eBikes is that most, except for some road or gravel eBikes, are designed for permanent motor use but I want a light bike which can give me some support when I want it and not all the time. This means less support and a small battery but that’s okay for me.
So, these bikes are crap, with no weather sealing at all. Got it!
Probably trying to tell you something
Rule 1 sell your EMTB before the warranty runs out, they will empty your wallet quicker than a Barcelona pick pocket. True EMTB ownership cost is about £500 to £600 per year depending on mileage, taking into account servicing, depreciation and faults / breakages. Can’t believe the world got sucked in to this fad.
Imagine if we had the same problems with motorbikes and cars! And some ebikes cost more than many motorbikes! ☹️
great comment
Never had a Tesla or Duke then I take it....
Thought I was the mutts nuts on my DRZ400…right until my son got a Transition £ Repeater 😳
