Just the hopelessness of this cinematic fight scene in which price is getting his ass handed to by shepherd and you pulling the knife out while you still hear those two fighting in the background really made this game stand out in my opinion.
@ThatOneGuy In reality? I don’t think so. Shepherd was a General who commanded 4 separate Armies, only a tough bastard could have that stuff given to them

Nope. Ghost IS dead. Ghost was shot in the chest, not the shoulder, and petrol was also poured on Ghost. Also, at no point in the ENTIRE GAME, let alone that one mission, does Ghost ever say "why do we gotta wear these fireproof vests", as was previously stated. Even if Ghost was only hit in the shoulder, at point-blanc range, that wouldn't have mattered. If the bulled didn't kill him initially, he would have bled out either way. The two snipers, Archer and Toad, were also confirmed KIA. Even if they weren't, members of Shepherd's Shadow Company was told to "Watch for snipers on thermal, over." Even if Ghost wasn't covered in petrol, and Archer and Toad survived, Ghost would be dead anyway, as nobody could pick them up in time, before Ghost bled out. Ghost is dead, whether you like it or not. That was confirmed by the writers of the story themselves. Also, Roach > Ghost. callofduty.wikia.com/wiki/Simon_%22Ghost%22_Riley
Whoever came up with this original tune (it also appears in a different form during the later part of "No Russian") - either Zimmer or Balfe - really had a genius moment. To a lesser extent, so did IW, for matching it with a suitable gameplay segment. It has this sort of cold/stark beauty that takes over the game's whole "end fight" scene, which simply wouldn't have made much of an impact on me without it. Instead, having been paired in this manner, it has became one of my favourite moments in gaming - right alongside the "betrayal" scene, the point where Shepherd marvelously shifts from supporting character to antagonist. The fact that two of my favourite gaming moments come from this one game... then you see the current state of the series, and think that CoD really "died" there alongside the old IW before Activision "rebuilt" it for MW3, a typical case of rise followed by decline. Even competing games like BF4 had campaigns that seemed so forgettable in comparison despite being grander in other respects (e.g. larger scale, more content, better balance). This is why I think an "MW2 Remastered" is Activision's best hope - stop seeking refuge in stealing ideas like Battle Royale or Prop Hunt from competing games, start seeking refuge - introspectively - in what this series once was. Or, to adapt a slogan from a certain somebody, simply "Make CoD great again." Edit: Retrospectively, with MW 2019's OST released, this is one of the tracks that makes MW 2019's OST look like pure garbage. Balfe's work really was the apex for Call of Duty's soundtracks.
They'll never give the fans what they want. Just pure remastered MW2, no changes, no "better graphics", just supported servers so people can play the old game on an official server.

7 years prior to this moment, 50,000 U.S marines are killed by Makarov under Zakheav's orders. Shepard was helpless to stop them, but was the first to know who pushed the button. He became obsessed in killing the new ultranationalist leader, doing whatever it took to win. He went too far, and was killed for it. But, just like Imhran Zakheav, the man he hated, he became a hero for his country.
It was getting hard to see already with the sand everywhere, but the knife in his chest certainly didn't help. He faded in and out of consciousness, his vision blurry and nearsighted. He could hear Price losing the struggle in between his bouts of darkness. Worse still, Soap was starting to feel cold inside. Seeing Shepherd beating his brother in arms to near death drained him even further. He gazed at the knife in his chest. ... _The Knife._ Shaking, Soap drags his heavy arm across his chest and grasps the hilt. Fiery tendrils of agony spike through his being immediately. Gritting his teeth, he begins to pull. It was like a searing hot nail was slowly debriding him inside out. _He pulled._ His vision swam and his brain quaked in shock. Crimson flooded his vision as the pain somehow worsened. _He pulled._ Using both his hands now, the last vestiges of his strength was rapidly fading. even with the searing heat inside his wound, he felt his body grow ever colder from blood loss. He couldn't hear Price struggling anymore. _But he still pulled..._ ... Until, finally, it was free. Drenched in his own blood, Soap flips the blade. Eyes seeing red, he acquires his target. Instinct takes over as Shepherd looks up from his victory. He releases.

To the people who have their differences about how the fight between shepherd should have gone. If price wasn’t winded then ofc he would have won, probably either by pulling a last minute move to either break shepherds arm or bust his knee cap. I honestly don’t think it wouldn’t just be a quick fight either, shepherd knows hand to hand combat too and would probably smack price around a little. Then again price was most likely running to shepherd as fast as he could while in his dazed state knowing that if he’s a second late then soap would get shot. Meanwhile shepherd was loading his gun and catching his breath standing over soap about to shoot him. Then when price finally pushes him to the side he wasn’t even thinking about anything else but saving soap and you can clearly see he lost his balance and shepherd took that advantage while he was still a little fresher than price. Just my opinion of course. 😁 (the soundtrack was just beautiful too)
What i love about confronting and killing shepard is how "unmodern" it all is. No guns no helos just three men in the dirt fighting the same hand to hand fighting the same way the first humans did. Modern warfare turned ancient.
I think it has something to do with being unique on the final battles of the og COD modern warfare trilogy, since we used a ranged weapon in COD4, then a weapon that's for melee and range being used in MW2 (2009), and lastly no weapons at all and only what's left in your area that you're at to fight back, that being the ropes that are probably attached to the chopper Makarov was at to hang him in MW3 (2011).
