Final Fantasy XVI is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix. The sixteenth main installment in the Final Fantasy series, it is scheduled for release on June 22, 2023 for the PlayStation 5 as a timed exclusive. The game will feature segmented open environments and an action-based combat system involving both melee and magic-based attacks. There are also recurring series features including Chocobos, and summoned monsters called Eikons, which are both fought as bosses and used through channelling their power in combat.
Final Fantasy XVI is set in the fictional world of Valisthea, a world divided between six nations who hold power through access to magical Crystals and Dominants, humans who act as hosts for each nation's Eikon. Tensions between the nations escalate as a malady dubbed the Blight begins consuming the land. Clive Rosfield, guardian to his younger brother Joshua, witnesses his kingdom destroyed and goes on a revenge quest in pursuit of the dark Eikon Ifrit.
Beginning concept development in 2015, the staff included Naoki Yoshida as producer, Hiroshi Takai as main director, artists Hiroshi Minagawa and Kazuya Takahashi, Kazutoyo Maehiro as creative director and lead writer, Masayoshi Soken as composer, and Capcom veteran Ryota Suzuki as battle designer. Yoshida's aim was for a dark fantasy storyline that would have broad appeal and reinvigorate the series. The game has been well received by journalists. Praise was given to its story, characters, music ad combat system. Criticism focused on its lack of deeper RPG elements, framerate issues, and by some for a lack of ethnic and gender representation despite its Medieval European setting and the largely anticipated decision of the creators to make the game as more historically accurate as possible to the demographic and the standards and customs of the time.
Well, I can’t say I’m shocked that after a blockbuster demo everyone loved, it turns out that Final Fantasy XVI itself is good as well. The embargo has lifted, and reviews are coming in for the game which releases tomorrow, June 22. No, the late embargo was not in any way indicative of anything being hidden. I don’t know why they did it, but whatever, reviews are great.
As it stands, Final Fantasy XVI has a 90 on Opencritic in an age when anything over a 90 is at the very least a GOTY contender, and right now its an 88 on Metacritic, but that keeps jumping around.

This is a weird take, but I really want a Drakengard game now in this combat engine and maybe graphics. They'd have to turn the details a bit down, but it could work. Maybe tie it into the wars between the waring factions in this game or something.

Open world sucks for anything but an mmo imo. Even elden ring was not that much of a masterpiece imho due to open world.
The thing about open world vs linear games is the pacing, open world can start to feel like a chore while linear games can give you a proper up and down in the action and story beats. Just think about uncharted.

It's your own fault for playing these games on performance mode instead of quality mode.
1080p is the lowest resolution I was told for performance mode. I of course don't know for sure but the game looks amazing to me. If a tree is 720p in the heat of battle then I'm not going to notice anyway. :)

I'm 18 hours in and it's a solid 8/10 game. It remains fun but has some serious quality control issues. The side quests and NPC's are absolutely terrible. The combat is also pretty shallow. Fun, but shallow. The story itself is good but doesn't come anywhere close to the heights of the great FF games from the past.

Good point. This game is a little more focused and has way better acting. But Clive is a lot like Alphen.

Im 20 hours into FF16 and i always compared somehow with Arise in my mind xD Honestly so far....i find Arise a lot better gameplay wise.
He reminds me more of Velvet from Tales of Berseria than Alphen, but the story definitely reminds me of Arise but more fleshed out

On a 4K TV, that's gonna look horrendous lol. Even 1080P on 4K TV looks noticeably bad, I can't even anything lower that...
This game has been a good break from 100 hours of TOTK. I’m enjoying the flashy combat and story. I have been having fun with the early side quest as well. Hopefully it stays going strong.

I personally don't like Open World RPG, it feels boring to me. I want a GOOD STORY that executed well so I won't get stuck in an open space 1000 hours not knowing what the heck is going on.
Too many games coming out this year. I have no idea when I'll get around to this one. Still need to finish TotK and then attack street fighter 6 and Jedi survivor and octopath 2 😢

I found the 30 fps mode pretty much rock solid. Dips for sure in 60 fps but I play on that mode because of the combat. Pretty much Rock solid in combat.

now I know why Starfield is 30 fps with no choice at 60. If you have a 60 option and it isn't perfect you can get points deducted. If you just skip the 60 option you don't get anything deducted.
Kinda, majority of people just won't play the game if it's locked to 30 fps. I refuse to play any game that is locked at 30 and requires precision movements & actions. The only exception would be bloodborne.
@@RedFox-ye1gy You're wrong actually, stats show that most people play on graphics mode which is 30 fps. This is most likely because that is the default setting for most games and people just don't change it, but it is by far the most used setting.

@mbern4530 I wasn't referring to the casual gamers, but I definitely could've worded it better. If people are complaining about frames, they are more likely to have an understanding of the frame differences and just skip a game if its locked to 30. So, the majority of people who care about framerates will skip the game.

That is exactly why Starfield is locked at 30fps. These massive open world games have potential to go over 30fps on next gen consoles, but if you have the fps unlocked but it can't run at a steady 60fps (like in FF XVI), it can make the fps feel sporadic.

@CharmanderandLucario 15 started the gameplay mechanics using kingdom hearts control, eventually 7 became a advance version of kingdom hearts controls and 16 turned into devil may cry controls as the evolution to the action genre. Interesting how differently you speak on certain things compared to skill up (only other review I’ve heard). He says there’s no elemental weaknesses. Side quests are shallow and unrewarding. Combat is flashy but ultimately simple due to lack of equipment and ability variety.

Also you get a chocobo from side quests upgrades to heals and able to carry more as well. Side quest are pretty rewarding I'd say

linear and corridor-like ff13 tier level design, way WAY too many cutscenes, exploration when it finally opens up 20 hours in is unrewarding and empty, loot is terrible, lacking rpg elements and the ones present feel tacked on, very little customization, no hidden things to discover, boring mmo-like side quests, pacing issues, combat is far too easy + mid boss checkpoints, poor enemy variety, takes too long to be able to freely customize your eikon loadout, gratuitous QTEs, countless squeeze-throughs, particle effects make it hard to see what the enemy is even doing, weak villain, neglected side characters, story and pacing near the end is a mess, early themes forgotten about, performance issues, people getting crashes/overheating, ungodly motion blur, etc.

Final fantasy 16 really excellent game for me. More unique, graphically impression and fresh new idea better than most game like current gen games like Star Wars, Legend of Zelda tears of kingdom and remake like dead space and Metroid remastered because those game are great upgrading a bit of new concept but not make entire new concept, just upgrade graphic and feel short and lazy feel.

It’s good that final fantasy is great again, 2010 to 2016 it was disappointing and 2006s ff12 was kinda disappointing. This here guys is the best final fantasy since ff10 and even better than ff7 remake because of the better gameplay that this has than the remake. 9.5/10

Worst FF to date. The combat is an absolute joke. It always had deep mechanics and systems and it's been reduced to a mindless single button masher. Mid story, uninteresting characters, poor animations, rubbish quests, empty world and pointless equipment.

People in the comments section need to stop , clearly this is yet again another divisive FF game and Yoshi p admitted as much , on a personel level i think its a decent game but not really my cup of tea i might even add , i actually enjoyed XV a little more than this one and not having a party with characters with different playstyles is a serious deal breaker for me when it comes to Final fantasy games but i guess to each their own. Also i was expecting the game to run at 1440p 60 in performance mode , now according to digital foundry the game dips to 720p and less than 40 fps , very disappointing.

@@I_Am_The_Social_RejectI mentioned FFXV as in FFXv the royal edition , at least that game had a party with varied combat styles , mini games , vehicles and the game is in a much better state than when it initially launched ,although it's definitely not my favorite in the series.

All complaints about star field and how 30 fps at 4k on Xbox is outrageous and yet this is usually at 45fps if play frame rate at 720p looking all blurry. They made game for 30fps with high resolution as well that’s way some devs design their games
I grew up with FF games... JRPGs is what got me into gaming. I like FF16 it's a good game, but it's not a rpg. I have every dmc game, lol I love dmc. DMC is not a rpg tho... I don't have a problem with final fantasy going full blown action, but they shouldn't call it a rpg when it's not. Larping has more rpg elements than this game and it's in real life. Almost every game nowadays has rpg elements in them. DMC and games like it are not called rpgs tho for obvious reasons. If it's not similar to DnD or table top rpg board games in my opinion lol it's not a rpg. Originally final fantasy was based on DnD and games like dragon age are still heavily based off of DnD, but ff16 removed almost every thing the series had in common with DnD. Honestly I can't stand how the media can't help mixing different genres together... just to attract a larger crowd of people. It's like how every movie nowadays has to have romance. Video games are simply mixing genres to attract a larger audience, but in the end the game or series loses what makes it unique to begin with. There is a reason why almost everything that becomes mainstream eventually starts to suck. Hiroshi M confessed to copying WoW to better improve FF14 and he openly talks about using DMC as a basis for ff16 to attract modern-day gamers. He's simply copying other game formulas that have been proven to work. I hate copycats and I really hate when a copy gets more popular than what it was copied from. It's extremely cheap and lazy. When a person copies others they eventually forget what makes them themselves lol like I said it's a good game, but they shouldn't call it a rpg. Final Fantasy 16 is a game that doesn't break new ground, but instead they are digging in the same spot as others. Even the story of the bearers is similar to Naruto lol they are simply copying what's successful. A demon host for a war deterrent.

This game was not worth the 70 i spent. Its content is worth 20-40$ at most.
I cannot believe they didn't flesh out any content outside the main story quest.
The value in the side quest is next to none. Some elite monsters (a high point) to tear up but since the itemization in this game is so half baked it ends up feeling hollow.
Why couldn't they just add some elemental or statues effects on some unique weapons you can earn/find...
New game plus randomizes the location of enemies and adds some challenging mechanics but that's about it.
This was mid tier action game through and through with next to no RPG or exploration elements.
Spectacle over Substance.

Honestly this game looks boring. Its flashy and cool but the core mechanics and gameplay startegies are not there.
It is boring, yeah. Super easy combat, flashy but lacking any depth or challenge. Exploration is non-existent. The RPG elements are absurdly shallow. The side quests and level design are both absolutely awful. A lot of the game also plays itself, quite literally. Several boss fights barely require your input. One boss fight literally happens entirely in a cutscene. So much of the game is just a movie. The story is intriguing but poorly paced. It's a really weak game.
Just tell me one thing, we will ever return to the young clive's story again or is that basically just for the demo. I do feel like the time skip after the demo came to soon and left me on so many questions about what happen after we left Rosaria.
Ohhhh you don’t like time skips then maybe skip this game lol they skip a lot of time like 2 time skips in the beginning when they were kids and then alter on after disc 1 you could say
@@thegamewin100 I realize that, but its how the time skips are effectively managed is what really matters. You can write a story and still jump ahead years but you have to make the past events relevent and tie-into the present time line. You have to reveal how these characters change over the course of those years and what the world was like during 15 summers early compared to now. For example what happen to Torgal and Jill after the Dominant awakened and destroyed everything, what about Clive, where did his journey take him after being forced into the royal army and branded. If these are just left forgotten and we just move ahead into adult clive with out ever returning to this story, then that is a serous plot hole.
It's like the time skip in the bible. Was Jesus a fuccboy in his late twenties? Did he start parties by turning everyone's water into wine? I have so many questions..

Decent looking... most of the time. Mostly great story. Balls combat. It should have been a movie. The big quicktime kaiju fights are, oddly, the most boring part of the "game" .

@@dpc4548 there is definitely progression but there isn’t much in terms of builds. I think it was okay at the beginning and as good as the last few dmc games a little over 10 hours in. @@nathanhargenrader645 the dmc games are fine, but that's an action game. This is too, now. It's just not an rpg, which is why there's no progression or player agency. It's more linear than 13 in that respect. That had great combat and made the player feel as though they were in control. Again, it makes sense in an action game like this, just not in an rpg, which is what it's being advertised as.
After the abysmal 15, I can't complain too much. The story is legitimately good. I want to see what happens. I care about the characters. Ralph ineson is in it! Much more than can be said about the last two predecessors.
I would have liked a final fantasy game in my final fantasy movie, that's all. I wish the marketing had been more up front about it not being an rpg.

It's absolutely amazing. Coming from a big turn based final fantasy fan, the combat is extremely addictive. Give it a chance if you haven't yet.
We've all played DMC before. It's just we didn't want FF turning into an action game. Because it's a RPG, not an action game.

I absolutely hated the combat in final fantasy 7 remake. I got to a point where i was literally just pressing a button and not even looking at the screen. 16 is so much more refined than that game. I would put the combat closer to God of war 2018. Check out the demo. That's what convinced me

@@Bluestar1079 That's because that isn't how you're supposed to play 7. That game isn't just an action game, it's also a turn based game. That's why you can't just dodge and parry literally everything while striking back. You need to use all 3 members with skills that work and synergize with your team properly, heal and buff during the right moments, wait for stagger to unleash your biggest attacks, and target specific weaknesses. If you play it like an action game then yeah it's not gonna work out. This game is a full action game with barely any RPG elements at all and that's why it feels better to you when you play it like one. 7R is refined, just not as an action game, because it wasn't meant to be one.

Turn based games are a thing of the past and don't appeal to this generation, yet qte's and 10% actual gameplay is fine.... blows my mind that they didn't incorporate a turn based system and merge it with cynamatic instead they just insert children hack and slash mechanics that are all too common and call it innovative.

I went into the demo hoping that I'd enjoy things but I just can't. If the plot is going to be taking so many cues from Game of Thrones I'm gonna give it a pass, and the combat system didn't feel very good to me either based on the demo (and challenge mode you unlock after). I'm hoping FF17 will be more in line with what I'll enjoy whenever that eventually comes out.
At least there is Dragon Quest 12 coming for turn base fan
