Isn’t it crazy how she still moves her hand in sync to her talking, even though she was on break? Now that just shows how long she’s done puppetry-it’s become instinct to her! I really want to try that!
I love so much that those who follow in Jim Henson's footsteps, carrying on his legacy, work so hard to both continue the tried and true craftsmanship he developed, but also dive headlong into the future with new and exciting technology, and work to bring the past and future together like this. Just awesome in every way!
From my experience with the digital side of things, the primary benefit of digital puppets is the ability to use different art styles or complicated designs that would be difficult to build or control with traditional puppets, as well as the ease of full body control with VTubers, VR avatars, and such. This is a very different application than what I'm used to and if I had to guess the reasoning here is to help facilitate the minimalist set design?
Grogu kinda proves the point that a practical puppet just hits different. Honestly I think a digitally enhanced practical puppet would be the best of both worlds
I wonder why they chose to control the digital puppet's head with hands instead of using something like what VTubers use. Maybe to avoid any possibile uncanny valley vibes? Then again, they could make the animations match lip flaps without making them look human... I'll throw a guess at it just being a standard system to control animatronic puppets that they adapted to be used for a digital one.
If I had to guess the reasoning here is probably to help facilitate the minimalist set design. This is a puppet that could theoretically be made practically with animatronics, but it then requires a physical set built around it.
vtuber models (both 2d and 3d) are great at tracking eye movement and head position but in my experience are very limited with lip syncing, which i would think is the biggest benefit to this henson technology. of course for some reason the example scene here doesn't have great lipsync but the potential is there.
Because Henson’s core competency is puppetry. Using face tracking could be useful, but wouldn’t be what Henson does. They’re not trying to create a digital person, they’re creating a digital puppet and puppet driven by the hands it would act differently otherwise.
Practical effects are better for the audience. I as well as everyone ive ever spoken to about it says the same. We all prefer practical effects, stop motoon puppers etc to digital.
Why can’t the use cameras and sensors pointed at the pupeteer’s face to control face and mouth movements? That would free up their other hand for other movements and end this poor woman’s nightmare.
Well the technology of the rigs has been in development for over 30 years at this point... before even recent facial trackings become commercially or even entry level available to consumers. The digital puppet rig is what is institutionally been used, a digital puppet to be as similar to the analogue and also allow supplemental controls, its a muscle memory at this point. It would be interesting to know if they have been working with facial tracking models and if they had any successes with it. Like live motion capture does has its own pros and cons. Like would a puppeteer have to learn new skills to emote like a puppet with their face, after all mapping a human one to one to a muppet, may not match... like how far does an actor have to unhinge their jaw to laugh like a muppet?
Yeah, it's an interesting idea too, but I'm gathering from the rig that they set up, they're genuinely trying to create a digital puppet. In all of the other puppets, facial expressions are controlled by hands. I'd guess that's just a fundamental principle for them that they're trying to stick to.
Exactly my thoughts! That tech is pretty well established and it is surprising that the Henson Company, who has pioneered so many things in that realm would not continue with face tracking/lip sync.
@@mf-- their hands are free to do other traditional puppeteering things. The Henson company actually has developed and invested in full body motion capture for like a decade now and has used it extensively in many of their projects. Tell them it's not puppeteering.

I saw this Henson tech demoed live in 2001 at the first & only Muppetfest. I also saw this live at CES/Comdex with Nvidia almost two decades ago. I also saw this again live last year at Puppet Up at Knott's Scary Farm. This is a substantial downgrade, the motion, movement, and mouth matching is terrible. What happened?
What is sad is that technology VTubers use right now, for a few hundred dollars, could replace most of what this rig does for a hundred thousand (according to Adam). In other words you have random people in their living rooms casually creating content that is several times more convincing and smoother than this. I get that the whole idea is supposed to be merging the analog with the digital, but I personally fail to see the value it adds. Either use real puppets, or go full digital with face and motion tracking.

It's all fun and games till Elmo is 3D animated and begin to walk on two legs
The Muppets have already done that

Practical effects just hit different ♥️
This is so true. I'm sure there will be a day when you can't even tell the CGI apart from reality but for now it's just CGI and that's all there is.
Indeed
Thank you, it's always nice to see creative and positive people. Thank you very much for the show.
Test 👍😉

I do love some digital effects and some look really cool, but practical has always been my favorite
Personally, I think both are cool, but we can agree to disagree.
So cool seeing augmented reality and virtual scenes being brought into the world of puppetry!
Wonderful! Thank you.
It's funny she claimed to be the most focused on the lip sync, but that seemed to have the most issues, at least in the performance they shared here.
Thank you.
I love the muppets
It’s the fish from Sesame Street!
Wow !!!! Fantástico ♥️

So this is the tech they use for Crush at Disneyland.
I wish Shari Lewis was still with us. I bet she could definitely handle all this and still be as hilarious and adorable.
Nice video sir 😊
I feel like "the whole gag" is for this to eventually all culiminate into some horrific weapons system that will be used to opress the masses 😨
If you think about it, its only a few bits and pieces away from being a pilots rig for a Pacific Rim Jaeger, two people in sync controlling one.
@@boxhead6177
Exactly.
@@boxhead6177great point and it's all started with digital puppetry
Yahoo?

I would want a toy that I could move like the jurassic park rig, then facial recognition for controlling its face.
Looks cool but a bit stiff, definitely in it's earlier stages, still lots of improvements to be made, exciting to see how it develops though!
TBH I was prepared for things to go way off the rails when she said she felt like Alec Baldwin. Good save.
go to phrase "100%"
100% !
I had no idea John Fetterman was also a muppeteer.

I'll take her job if it's too hard on her.
New technology in everything. Adam, you follow me))) I see it))) For a show you always need fresh ideas and innovations)))
Digital, to analog, there is no comparison. Analog puppeteers are the GOAT. Digital and AI is garbage compared to it.
