Penn State is not facing a typical Pac-12 team in the Rose Bowl, semifinal keys, Heisman thoughts

  • PennLive's David Jones and Bob Flounders give their initial thoughts on the college semifinal playoff games (Ohio State-Georgia, Michigan TCU). Jones discusses worthy candidates in this year's Heisman Trophy race. And the Utah team that Penn State will face in Pasadena is not your typical Pac-12 squad, which is a good thing.

Coz the Big 10's got Maryland, Indiana, Rutgers, a 3 and 6 Michigan State...(shall I keep going?), a lucky Purdue team, an average Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota...(should I keep going?), a 4 and 5 Wisconsin, a fragile Northwestern, and Nebraska. Oh, and I almost forgot a Penn State that only beat one team with a winning record during the season. Ya, that's a major flex right there. C'mon guys, flag football? Oregon did beat Ohio State last season, and Utah would have in the Rose Bowl if they were not depleted in the secondary. ( Utah was using a running back as a DB) Oregon also played Auburn tough and bearly loosing a few years back to start off a season, they ended up winning the PAC12 that year. Now, I'm not going to argue this PAC12 is a slightly lower level league than the BIG 10 overall simply because of population especially back in the day when all these SEC and big 10, big 12 teams were cheating and paying players before it was legal. We all know this was happening back then and these further east coast and mid U.S. teams got a jump on the west coast just for that reason. population, money, TV dollars. But now at this point, just because Lincoln Riley is coaching USC and they are all offense and no defense doesn't make the whole league soft. That's a stretch. Of course Utah is the least soft. This goes without saying. But even tho that being the case, Utah has struggled to get to were they are because of teams like Oregon, Washington and USC playing good football in certain years. Washington State and Oregon State play tough but as you say they don't have the players. But the reason the PAC12 doesn't stack up all the time is simply money. Lets be real. It just is what it is that way. Don't dog on the poor now.

As far as I know and see (after 17 yrs as a player and 10 as a coach so far) no coach ever recruits players because of the conference they play in. Every coach recruits the best players they can get. Caleb Williams was the best player playing in that PAC 12 championship game before he got injured, if he was 100% healthy, they might not win, but they don’t get blown out.
