If you're a nerd, learn to fix things. Crazy how useful it can be. You can buy broken stuff online often for almost free and a few bucks worth of components and save like 80%, It's always a bit of a gamble, but if you have experience and know what to look for and what to avoid the odds are often really good. I've been cheaply fixing electronics for friends and family for a while now, saving them so much money. And if you have broken stuff that used to be valuable, don't throw it away, nerds like me will haply buy the "trash" from you for the right price ;)

make a spreadsheet. Track your fixed and variable expenses (for a month). Then look where you're spending too much and find out where is room for improving. Also these day a lot of people do have unnecessary subscriptions. Do cancel them, if you feel like you haven't used that service for a while.

+1 highly recommend doing this, that also takes away the uncertainty of how much money is left for each month and if you additionally assume some wiggle room for unexpected expenses there's going to be more money left over than planned a lot of times.
Plus you can plan saving expenses in there as well if the budget allows for it. So while the sheet says you might have $100 left for a certain month, you didn't actually spend the money you put away for saving (let's say $50 a month). It's still there, but you are less tempted to spend it willy-nilly.

    @MyrkDomolith 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

    Adding to the cooking bit:
If you prep food or ingredients for the week, your total time making food in that week can be as low as 3 hours. Most of the time spend "cooking" is usually prepping ingredients anyways.
Also, add a soup to that list of things to learn how to cook, if you like soup. It's a lot like a crock pot meal, just toss ingredients in and let it do its thing for an hour or two.
Probably the best first thing to learn how to make, since it's largely in the background, lets you experiment with flavors, lets you jar up plenty of leftovers and soup stock for other things, and can be incredibly cheap even for cooking at home. Plus you can save a bad batch easily with either more soup stuff or a potato.
Then you can work backwards from there to learn how to do gravies, marinated meats for stuff like tacos, baked foods...
And an added one for the final tip- learn to do things yourself:
Ask to use your friends' expertise. It's more expensive than learning how to do it yourself, but you can still learn how to do the thing, you can hang with your friend(s), and it can be cheaper.
Don't expect or push for free; you're still trading time for money, but it's not just your time. Usually some food and time hanging out is enough.

    Another thing: subscriptions.
You shouldn’t have any ideally but that’s not how the world works. If you’re living in a place that has 4 walls and a roof with lighting and running water, you’re paying a subscription every single month. It’s not called a subscription but it works the exact same way. The only thing other than that you should be paying monthly is your phone bill and (maybe) internet.
Anything else is a luxury, wait until you start making more money, you’re not going to be missing out on anything.
I know it sucks but these days even playing video games is expensive. You wanna play almost any PS4 or PS5 game? You gotta pay $70 a month just to play multiplayer games and even a bunch of games with no multiplayer at all. Thats why I cancelled my subscription. It’s not like I’m getting anything out of 90% of the video games being made today anyway, so why pay for it?
I remember just a few years ago everything was at least affordable but that’s not the case anymore. Every subscription has increased in price, there are 10 times the amount of subscriptions there used to be and even when you pay, you’ll probably still have to watch ads.
I miss the days when playing my favorite game didn’t overdraft my bank account. That said, I’m going to enjoy the last month or so of free games from PS Plus then I’m done. Most people may not be literally broke but I am. I’ve accepted that most “normal things” are now privileges. The economy is shit and won’t be getting better anytime soon it ever does at all.
I now sympathize with the people who choose to cut everyone and everything off and go live in the wilderness. I’ve never hated this world more than I do now. Imma go outside and eat some dirt or something, fuck this world!

i wish i saw this video sooner. ever since june i was crying sm because i barely had money. i frequently have flights for work and i barely had money to make capital for item production for my business. if you think about it, i didn’t have much to worry about. i’m still a teen. i live with my guardians, like why would a teenager worry about money? i told myself at the start of the year that i would eat out lesser, that i shouldn’t order food. my family barely cooks food that i can physically eat (i have asd)so i have to resort to buying canned food or ordering to eat, but i’ve been also spending wayyy too much money on things i don’t need. i would order sweet ahh drinks everyday (matcha, boba etc), i would frequently buy anime merch even though i have nowhere to put it in. i feel guilty but tried telling myself that it’s a way for me to heal my inner child.
it finally kicked in last week where i had an emergency where my laptop broke and made me unable to work, i also have a flight coming up and didn’t knew what to do. i barely had money left in my bank. i guess i learned my lesson now, i just wished that i learned it sooner. but it’s not that late i suppose…? :)

The cooking part is definetly the biggest part way to save money. I've been guilty of this during college and then I started cooking and saving more money. You'll get better and better with the more you cook. Please don't eat out everyday:

I'm so glad that I've never had the compulsion to spend. I just save and invest everything I make and spend the bare minimum. Maybe a couple grand a year of discretionary spending and the rest is just bills which I keep to a minimum. In a few more years I expect to have enough money to where if I had to stop working for whatever reason, i could subsist indefinitely.

Can you make a video about societal norms in the future, like their expectations Vs. your own personal goals? I feel like more people should understand that not everyone wants to go the same route as them and the topic is somewhat controversial.

I have a routine where 5 days of the week I make home cooked meals, and then friday night and saturday afternoon I go out to eat, and that's been a really nice thing for me, because I reward myself some personal time on those days, where I can hang with friends. and I had to move back in with my parents due to a safety situation, but now I save like 75-100 dollars a month, and that's been really nice because now i'm gonna put that money into investments.

1 thing about sales, certain stores like Amazon will artificially raise the price of items before a big sale and then the "sale" will just be the normal price for that item. Make sure to look at historical pricing of items before you buy or else you might not really be getting the value you think you are

This is an excellent video. I’m 33. Anyone younger reading this comment please learn the skill of retaining your money as young as possible. It’s so great to have it, however if people know you have saved and saved you will be hit up for money over and over again. It might be hard especially with family, but “No” is a complete sentence.

Just the other week found basically new adidas track pants that show up on their online store for $80 and I paid 15 for them.

my pov: spend less than what you make, place a good chunk of biweekly income into your savings or investing account, and try to save money in your chequeing account (this gives me the illusion that i'm saving money twice). this system allowed me to stay balanced where I'm super aware of my spending power and I can enjoy spending money stress free because I know I'm saving something. Should something financially stressful come up, i can fall back on the money i saved in my chequeing account before it bleeds into my savings.
    dont forget to treat yourself.

Tip #1: Haircuts cost ppl hella money. Consider saving 25 bucks a month (or however often you get your hair cut) and buying a pair of clippers online for 20 bucks and either giving urself a haircut (buzz cuts are easy) or get a family member of friend to do it. My gf cuts my hair and we use the saved money for dates.
Tip #2: don’t go out for coffee and invest in a solid coffee maker instead. In the rest of the world ppl make espressos with a $15 coffee percolator. It’s just as good as Starbucks. Or invest in an espresso machine. The thousands it would save you in the long run for the small few hundred dollar investment is very much worth it.
Tip #3: invest most of ur paycheck as soon as you get it. Calculate exactly how much money you need to live and invest the rest so your checking account always looks like you are broke, and you will live accordingly. While ur savings and investments build. Invest in high dividend ETFs like SCHD. If you have a million dollars in it you will make 35k passively. And the gain is exponential as time goes on.
Tip #4: buy things second hand. eBay is king, especially refurbished. It’s the same as new and you save hundreds in some cases.

I’ve personally never understood spending exorbitant amounts of money on food. Just the other day I was looking at how much it would cost to take a trip to New York.
Most of the figures were waaay more than it would actually cost. People said that the average person would be spending $100 USD PER DAY just for food. Thats the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard and even New York isn’t THAT expensive. Everyone was also worried about finding a “good” hotel instead of an AirBNB or something.
$200 for a single day in Manhattan is crazy. I only eat one meal per day and live off of Ramen noodles and I’m perfectly content with that. It’s not the healthiest thing to eat but I like it, it’s cheap, easy and quick to make, and quick to eat.
Meanwhile, there are people spending hundreds of dollars on Wagyu steak!

I work at fast food currently. The usual order is around $12-20. We get a few orders that are 1-2 items and even that's $1-10 and then we occasionally get $30-40 orders. I'm surprised when someone spends $100+ which at that point buy groceries because it takes us a long time for us to make the food so you're waiting either ways. Of course come around so I can get my dough 🤑 but don't spend $40+ at a time unless its a special occasion that doesn't happen often

10 lbs of rice is $10 where I live. that's WEEKS of food right there even if you pig out. combine it with some beans, taco seasoning, maybe a few chunks of chicken, you have a VERY cheap meal that's filling and tastes alright. rice cookers are like $20 but you don't need one unless you're useless at cooking.

I agree with everything in this video, except the buy an HP computer. DO NOT, by any circumstance, buy an hp and acer just cause they're cheaper. Buy a thinkpad or asus or if you want gaming buy a lenovo legion or an asus. These other brands have better specs at a lower money point because they cheap out on stuff like connectors, power supplies and invisible components to the consumer, which will be worse in the long run.

So basically its probably best to only turn off your ac if you know youre not gonna be home for a while, like a vacation for the weekend or for a week or something. 0:39 No one tells people not to put money in a savings account. Anyone with minimal financial knowledge can understand the concept/power of investing a part of your earnings into a safe security, to create manageable growth over several years. Put a little into the market after you've gone through your budget, it'll be beneficial and can make a big change down the road.

An advice for ppl whos going through depression and can't get themselves to cook a good meal due to lack of mental energy; buy a rice cooker and a crock pot. You can make almost anything in it without having to do all the extra work of cooking on stove/oven. Simple meals like chicken rice and some beans and veggies of your choice all in one, if eating meals is difficult for you. Be sure to have fresh fruits and drink plenty of water.
