    Your great demonstration video informs & inspires people all over the world. This video is really 'step-by-step' DIY (do-it-yourself). Your air cleaning unit is practical & not expensive. Thanks.

    Had an idea for the activated carbon. Mount a Long larger diameter pipe on the wall and put it in there. Then put fan on end to push air through. Then make it so you can rotate the pipe when you want to put a fresh side on the top. i bet you could get a large diameter shipping tube to make it out of too.

    Interesting seeing all these different approaches to fan dust-collector boxes popping up at pretty similar times. (you, Matthias, Jack...)

    Nice detail of the rubber to prevent vibrations. Great work, mate.

    Excellent video It was great to watch a craftsman applying his skills - If I were on a ship to Mars this is the air filter/scrubber I would want next to me. Because I do not have your skills or tools mine will be a 20 inch box fan with a single filter slapped on the back.

    Here's a crazy thought for the activated carbon. How about a perforated bottom 5 gallon bucket set over the outlet on your portable dust collector? Mix fill the carbon with other filler to reduce the total pressure drop. That dust collector should have enough static to push thru a sandwich layer of screen with the activated carbon/filler in between. That or the other idea of crushing your carbon up and coating one of your dust filters. It will load them up, but you could occasionally blow them out and re coat with your massive bag of activated carbon.

    • @SavvasPapasavva
      @SavvasPapasavva  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good idea. It could work as the hepa filter in the extractor will capture the dust, and the exhaust should be relatively clean air. It also crossed my mind, that I could fill up a bag in my henry hoover with carbon and just turn that on.

    Awesome 👏 but shouldn’t it be activated carbon or even better, bamboo? How is it performing today??

    Larger air flow isn't necessarily better for carbon filters. They have what is called residence time. In other words it takes a certain amount of time for the carbon to absorb the odors. If you force the air too fast it doesn't have enough time for the carbon to do it's job. Just keep that in mind if it doesn't work as well as you would expect.

    • @SavvasPapasavva
      @SavvasPapasavva  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was speaking to the guy from British Engineering who checks our equipment at work. He didn't recommend lowering the air flow on down draft tables even for fumes. The more I thought about it I had to agree. Say the fumes are being produces quicker than the time it takes to draw through the carbon. Also lower air flow means not all the fumes will be drawn through the carbon. And finally - where your head was while the fumes were being made. Better to get it away from you. Also I have no way of measuring if it's working or not. Lol.

  • @Cactusworkshopchannel

    Very interesting! too bad the carbon didn't work. I guess what pushes the air in those cases needs to be more similar to a compressor than a fan. I'm waiting for the next one!

      An idea to increase the air flow for the carbon: a larger box, using two identical fans in a push/pull configuration, one post-filter perhaps?

  • @Flakey86
    @Flakey86 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can buy activated carbon pre-filter sheets which might work in this application.

  • @genericjesus8803
    @genericjesus8803 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    GREAT ideas, I’m thinking about building a similar unit. QUESTION, won't the carbon
    slowly sink to the bottom of the box? Maybe just flip the unit upside
    down every week?!?!

    Any later attempts related to using activate carbon or managine VOCs? Unfortunately, a lot of the excitement about air filtering plants were based off of NASA studies in confined areas that share little relevance with the many studies done by public health and environmental agencies that have shown disappointing results in real living environments.

  • @krzysztoftryka399

    How about industrial-grade exhaust fan? 2400 m3/h, 30 cm in diameter. Could be better - more blades at a different angle.

  • @levijessegonzalez3629

    Hello! I am interested mainly in VOCs as well. But I want to create my own purifier.
    However I can't go this elaborate.
    So my question is, Would it be possible to put some filter on a box fan (as a lot of diy'ers do on youtube) but the difference is somehow use a filter that would remove VOCs?
    What do you think the best way to do this is?
    HEPA / Furnace filter on the back of the fan, then activated charcoal on the front?

  • @benc1927

    I have no idea if this is feasible, or practical in terms of expense. However I saw someone made a comment which is "Greek" to me, but may be helpful to you. We need an updated Charcoal filter fan for VOCs if anyone can figure it out. thanks!

  • @brandonupchurch7628

    Instead of using 2 2in filters why not use a single 4in-5in thick filter, I don't know if they are as common across the pond but if you want activated carbon , at least here in the states several manufacturers make filters with activated carbon impregnated media.

  • @bengriffiths442

      aham, I saw, yes it's working. You mention that your filter is G4, my air purifier is with G4 and F9, and the pre filter (g4) looks clean, 10 months already, It is a little dark but there is no wood dust. I am starting to think that my shop is very clean, I am trying to catch everything from the sorce (I have and top and bottom dust collection on my table saw) basically my table saw is dustless, may be because of that I do not have so much wood particles in the air, still have but not so much may be. ;]
