One thing I noticed last season was that Martinez's ability to break a press with a vertical pass into midfield was excellent but often the receiving midfielders weren't comfortable taking the ball on the half turn and progressing to the final third. A lot of our attacks either broke down or slowed down at this point and we ended up going long to the wingers to cut out this step. Now that we've got a solid ball playing defender, we desperatly need a midfielder with the ability to receive the ball in space on the half turn and progress it to the likes of Rashford and Antony quickly. It looks like Mount fits this role perfectly, while having the ability to chip in with goals and assists. He will also bring down the age of our midfield.
Yea, McTominay is absolutely terrible at this, you'd often see him hiding behind an opposition player, or playing it sideways instead of turning on the ball. And Fred in this position would try to switch it, and end up hitting it into the stands if he's under the slightest bit of pressure. And the little we've seen of DVB last season suggests he'd be so far forward that he'd be in danger of being offside.
As a Chelsea fan, I'm absolutely gutted. He does so much behind the scenes that you only really see when you watch him regularly. United have basically got Ji-sung Park 2.0 on their hands.

We will be able to play far higher up the pitch and win the ball back far higher as well, because both Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes are two of the hardest working, and versatile players, in the league. Mason is not a bad one ... we will need a new right back...a new center back ...and a striker ...basically if the glazers leave and we get five good players in ... we will be in business next season

Finally someone has explained this signing properly, I would also add United has plenty of midfielders that like to naturally play in the left channel and not much in the right channel. Mason Mount has played there a lot for Chelsea and would bring a nice balance to United’s midfield. I’m really excited about this signing, hopefully we can now sell both Fred and Dean which will allow us to spend on more positions.

Ten Hag tried this formation a few times with Fred playing this role, and our best performances of the season were those games. The problem is, Fred isn’t quite good enough on the ball to start there all season. Mount is the only quality player who can play this role perfectly. This also suits Donny VDB perfectly. He’s very good at everything mentioned in this video, and I honestly hope that ETH gives him one last chance. He’s been very poor as a lone CAM and I really dislike him in that role, however, when he’s played deeper next to Casemiro, he’s really shown how good he is on the ball, and at receiving the ball in tight spaces, making lots of intelligent passes to keep possession. I know the fan base is tired of him, but I really hope that ETH gives him one more chance. I also think Sancho would be incredible in this role, weirdly. Great at intense pressing, picks up intelligent positions, his best attribute is his link up play and short, progressive passes. With his lack of aggression and somehow the inability to take a man on, I think a deeper role would suit him really well. I’m excited to see this in action, I really think this could transform us in a way that not many people are expecting.
You're right on VDB, as a lone CAM he is always looking to score and he is always in the box. However, I noticed that when he played deeper alongside a good CDM like Matic, he was more creative and more on the ball. He made crunch tackles and was better overall. However, I think the Rabiot signing would help with the CDM role as we don't have a direct replacement for CASEMIRO and I actually believe a CDM shd be a priority signing for us so we can release Mc-Fred. Even if we were to get an understudy CDM who can also play as an 8, but very good at the 6. Then our midfield would be sorted and we can look at Strikers next.
My other thought on the Mount signing is that Bruno might be made the 8, the one who carries the ball from defense to attack, like FDJ and Mount is the 10. Bruno played as the other 6 alongside CASEMIRO and he looked so good in that role at some point last season.

I do 100% agree that we need a CDM, tho. It should be one of our main priorities, yet I see no rumours about it at all. Lavia is expensive (around £50m), but he’d be a perfect backup to Casemiro. Hopefully we can get VDB or Fred on some form so we don’t need another backup CM. I don’t trust Eriksen after his form towards the end of last season tbh, he was never the same after the injury. He also doesn’t fit into the new system. Bruno was unbelievable in a deeper position, idk why ETH didn’t experiment more with him there, but he seems to prefer him in a more advanced position. I have to say I'm one of the Dads (and a Utd fan) who's always watched England and wondered how he gets a game, so found this really interesting....here's hoping there's something to it....would love to see us being able to go toe to toe with the Citys, Arsenals and Lpools of the world and not just have to rely on counter attack...and despite loving Eriksen so much for the silk he brings, I do think he's a bit of a luxury player in the big games and gets found out a bit defensively when he's asked to play next to Casemiro....

I must say, I thought that Maddison was the better “value buy”, but seeing your superb video explaining Mason’s “extra benefits of his all round game (pressing, positional cover etc.), I am a total convert. Lets hope we also do get a competent No. 9, along with Diogo Costa … and then we’re all set up to at least ‘Mount’ a challenge for the title…. excuse the pun!

I'm happy we got him, he's upgrade for eriksen we've missed last season. "When" casemiro gets suspended Mount would fill in the defensive work along with another no.8. Most importantly Mount is a teachers pet and endeared to every chelsea faithful, he has the age and passion and does the required running and compliments Bruno the best. All the other alternatives touted have record of bad locker room track record (rabiot, caicedo etc). And also this feels like somewhat of an ultimatum of sorts from ten hag to get the deal over which shows he already has all the plans in place for Mount to thrive.

Mason went to the school I teach at. I met him just before the last Euros. Great guy; sad for my Chelsea supporting cousins, but love Utd so, Ray Wilkins rides again. ❤
One thing I always found interesting was that every Chelsea manager and fan always rated Mount highly, while other fans never seem to rate him, that makes me think he has something that doesn't always show up on the stats page that only people who watch him every week see. While I don't think he is a world-class player, I do think he is someone that is worth getting.
He isn’t at the moment, but he has the sort of profile that could age like fine wine. He’s got a good football IQ, I can imagine him hitting his peak around 30 if he stays healthy.

One more thing to add... What is the main difference between this season and previous 3 years? Most of the lineup is similar (or same). Midfield played solid. Defense was solid. The biggest difference was Mount in form in previous years dragging us into TOP4 offensively and Mount being out of form/injured, where nobody else had no impact to help that. Basically Mount was the only player, who worked properly in offensive part of the game (except of wingbacks). And nobody was able to replace his input. Once he was injured, our numbers went from mediocre to terrible. And did not matter if we played Felix, Noni, Sterling or anybody else. Even this season - we were never doing really well this season. But look at the results and play. Until March Mount was playing. We had some wins, mostly tied the matches. Since his last match 4th March, we had 1 win, 4 ties, 8 loses. You can blame Lampard, but wasnt it partially us missing the most influential player in the team?
after all the saga on Frankie djong, we were not that much in to cacemerio, look how he took our heart, Martinez is also another and am unable to rule out Weg Horst either because he did some job done and it was a panic loan after the injuries in mid season, but if ETG put his time and dedication to sign some one believe me its because he is about to cook us something tantalising.
This also explains well the dynamic with liverpool's midfield where szob will be more the fernandes and Mac allister will be more the 'mount' kind of role
I believe mount is a great signing, maybe up to Licha level last season. We would still require a world class no 9, but with mount in the team, perhaps it would unlock more scorers among the players that would sum up to the single no 9 (if in the end we dont get the no 9 we wanted).

Mount was treated so badly after giving 18 years to Chelsea . Utd are going to get a monster of a player this is the buy of the season no matter what else happens in the transfer market true Chelsea fans adore him the media should be ashamed by allowing Boehly to dictate he’s agenda through them
This has shifted my opinion on the Mount acquisition. Now I'm satisfied we're getting him. I still think we need a secondary CDM to help Casemiro kill off the games in the latter minutes.
Get rid of mctominay and Fred, bring in Amrabat. Means we can bring on Erisksen for Mount in the 60th minute if we need a goal, or Amrabat to defend a lead. Would actually start the season with a seemingly strong midfield bench.
I don’t want Mason Mount at the Theatre Of Dreams but I trust Ten Hag and I believe that he has seen something we can’t all see yet so let’s hope for the best.

Fernandes and Mount in the same team doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Very different players, but they're both best deployed in the same position, CAM. Mount will need to adjust his game if this is going to work. To be fair, he's the kind of player who is capable of that. I rate Mason Mount, but I'm not convinced this'll be the great signing some people think.

Please have a look at his open play assists and rethink this video. Bruno and Eriksen are far better passers and setpiece takers than he is. McTominay and Fred are better defensively. Mount is bang in between on all stats and none are actually favourable. Also, his best stats came under Tuchel with him playing as 1 of 2 no. 10s with a midfield double pivot behind him. It made it easier for him to press and cover space. He will struggle as an 8 in a 4-3-3.

One thing I always found interesting was that every Chelsea manager and fan always rated Mount highly, while other fans never seem to rate him, that makes me think he has something that doesn't always show up on the stats page that only people who watch him every week see. While I don't think he is a world-class player, I do think he is someone that is worth getting.
He isn’t at the moment, but he has the sort of profile that could age like fine wine. He’s got a good football IQ, I can imagine him hitting his peak around 30 if he stays healthy.

What is the main difference between this season and previous 3 years? Most of the lineup is similar (or same). Midfield played solid. Defense was solid. The biggest difference was Mount in form in previous years dragging us into TOP4 offensively and Mount being out of form/injured, where nobody else had no impact to help that.
Basically Mount was the only player, who worked properly in offensive part of the game (except of wingbacks). And nobody was able to replace his input. Once he was injured, our numbers went from mediocre to terrible. And did not matter if we played Felix, Noni, Sterling or anybody else.
Even this season - we were never doing really well this season. But look at the results and play. Until March Mount was playing. We had some wins, mostly tied the matches. Since his last match 4th March, we had 1 win, 4 ties, 8 loses. You can blame Lampard, but wasnt it partially us missing the most influential player in the team?

I believe mount is a great signing, maybe up to Licha level last season. We would still require a world class no 9, but with mount in the team, perhaps it would unlock more scorers among the players that would sum up to the single no 9 (if in the end we dont get the no 9 we wanted).

This has shifted my opinion on the Mount acquisition. Now I'm satisfied we're getting him. I still think we need a secondary CDM to help Casemiro kill off the games in the latter minutes.
Get rid of mctominay and Fred, bring in Amrabat. Means we can bring on Erisksen for Mount in the 60th minute if we need a goal, or Amrabat to defend a lead. Would actually start the season with a seemingly strong midfield bench.

Fernandes and Mount in the same team doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Very different players, but they're both best deployed in the same position, CAM. Mount will need to adjust his game if this is going to work. To be fair, he's the kind of player who is capable of that. I rate Mason Mount, but I'm not convinced this'll be the great signing some people think.

United's midfield is literally the weakest part of the squad, not the strongest. Their back line is the strongest part of the squad by a wide margin.

Please have a look at his open play assists and rethink this video. Bruno and Eriksen are far better passers and setpiece takers than he is. McTominay and Fred are better defensively. Mount is bang in between on all stats and none are actually favourable.
Also, his best stats came under Tuchel with him playing as 1 of 2 no. 10s with a midfield double pivot behind him. It made it easier for him to press and cover space. He will struggle as an 8 in a 4-3-3.
