I know I’m late to the video but always remember to read cards even if they don’t activate! Early on at 6:07 he removed “orbital cannon” but that can only be hit if it is the only threat and there was 2 above.
I guess this was on the backlog for a bit. It isn't in circulation now. *Worth noting, this is the 2nd Edition so components may differ if you get the 1st edition.
Everytime Zee says "Let's break it down," I keep expecting some funky music to start up. Especially when he then says, "I dig it," like two minutes later. Also, I think the monocrome, sketchy, visuals on the back of the box were probably an intentional design choice to go along with the rest of the design asthetic. I remember books having graphics like that on the back or in ads on the last pages of the book. I can definitely see not evryone liking it, though.
It took a year and a half to get the 2nd edition from the time I kickstarted it. It was well worth it. I have bought a few other solo games, and other than mint works for this]ear awesome various solo variants, Deep Space D-6 is my ultimate solo game to play. The newest version of Tau’s dream, just kickstarted, brings this idea and mechanism to life as a bigger co-op style game called Armada. He’s hard at work right now as of this post fine tuning it, and I’m sure after seeing this review will fine tune it even more. The man is meticulous, and do his best to produce the best version his his creation. After that year and a half wait and since, I’ve grown to understand and admire.
Great review. It was a KS game a while back. There was also an expansion that adds a new boss and new mechanics that allow upgrading the ship. But I agree that it hits the sweet spot of a quick solo game.
Thank you Zee for another nice review. I was lucky to get the game and its expansion during my trip to Bangkok. I really love it as it gets multiple plays whenever it hits the table. Rating it an 8 as well.
Excellent review... love this game! I own it plus the expansion... I just backed the recent Kickstarter (not solo) and I am hoping it works just as well!
Sounds like what y'all really want is Astroforce: The Dice Game, which recently completed its Kickstarter campaign. Basically a reimplementation of this, but with more boards, better graphics, and an expansion.
D-6 Armada (1-4p) just went through Kickstarter. The creator is thinking of reprinting D-6; fill out this survey if interested: forms.gle/WNZJike8cJmfzkHv6
Definitely agree that the rulebook was poor quality (I didn't think to check BGG for clarifications so just interpreted it how I thought meant most sense). On the other hand I didn't mind the minimalist graphic design. Personally found it to be exhausted of replay-ability very quickly and wasn't that engaging so got rid of my copy.
I'm pretty sure I found the print-n-play on BGG a few years ago. Great try before you buy. I bought the game and expansion after trying. Agree with Zee's review in nearly every point.
Yeah, you are way late on this review. I kickstarted the 2nd edition. We got our copies last year. I don't know if you can get the game in retail now. It sold out quick. I love the game. Love the retro look. Dice are great. Your right about the boards and card quality. The cool thing is on BGG you can download different ships that other people have designed. Star Trek, Star Wars, etc.
The publisher is considering a reprint of this game, but they need input from the community. More info on bgg: boardgamegeek.com/thread/2422661/deep-space-d-6-reprint
I was going to by this for a friend if it was $15 or under, just to have a small game to have in the car. Not many components, and very cheaply made. I can't believe the greed for what people try to get for it.
Not cheaply made, at least not my copy. I've personally been quite impressed with the production and ascetic. Worth the retail, easily. But of course YMMV.
I just wish it wasnt bloody impossible to find the expansion. I love the game, would certainly like to get the expansion, but.... yeah, just cant find it no matter how much I look for it. That's the worst part of this hobby, ugh.
Hey that looks like a game I'd like let me go to my online retailer and... Out of Stock, Sellers listing for 100 bucks... Curse you Zee!!!! *shakes fist*
I sat down 3 times to play this. I watched several tutorial videos. I read the rules. I never actually made it through a game because it was just too confusing. I don't see any room for interesting choices either, and it's just stacked against the player no matter what you do.
I love the box looking like a 70s novel.

The box looks like that because it's replicating the old "Choose your own Adventure" books.
Yeah but that doesn't really make thematic sense. CYOAs were not mostly sci-fi stories.
I’m pretty sure it’s meant to look like an old Ace science fiction paperback from the 1970s.
@@chrismusix5669 trudat.
That gets a bit weird now, though, since there ARE Choose Your Own Adventure board games that also replicate that look.
I guess this was on the backlog for a bit. It isn't in circulation now.

I actually really love the components and aesthetic of this game! There's also a huge campaign with it on the designer's website.
I've been waiting for a reprint of this game for sooo long. I really hope there's going to be one
It is available for free as a print and play on the game's BGG page.

Very nice to see this game here! Really love it!
i see what you did there with the Z in the frame of the table over your left shoulder there, well done sir, well done
I absolutely *love* the aesthetics of the components and box!

People can get the print-n-play of the Halcyon on BGG. Uses regular dice. Fun little solo game!
Looks like FTL the board game
That's exactly what it is, only somehow even less interesting.
@@playstationyoutube4416 game is originally a print and play. This is the kickstarter boot up
The designer isn't shy about FTL being a major inspiration.

Orbital cannon could not be targeted because it wasn't the only threat.
I agree! I don’t do much solitaire but FLGS folks talked it up and I decided to try it. I really have enjoyed it and need to get that expansion.

Nice review...wish the game was easy to get.
It was 2 years ago when it was released and distributed by CSI

I had also rejected Deep Space D-6 until I watched this video. Pretty good for a quick solo after all.
Hoping for a reprint!

Such a nice game. I've only got 2 PnP versions of it. Still can't find it.
The look reminds me of the old game Starfleet Battles

Game looks like a prototype. Not for me unfortunately.
