Chess was huge in the Soviet Union, it was on par with hockey and football (soccer) over there. The Soviets even paid their good chess players a salary to simply study and play the game. They were also famous for teamwork at the top level of the game, there were no show offs per say, it was more of a team or fellowship environment which is why they were so good at the game back then.

Trouble is a lot of the game isn't shown, it's really more of a puzzle devised by IM Jeremy Silman. That being said, Ron not only had to avoid getting checkmated, but he had to do so while avoiding losing a Rook (Hermione) and a Bishop (Harry).
I really enjoyed this and your commentary helped me understand the games quite well (and especially the drama surrounding the tournament). Thanks! One small critique: I'm relatively beginner in chess and didn't realize in your game 6 commentary initially that the players were now on different sides of the board compared to games 1, 3, and 5 and was confused after I realized it and had to rewatch the commentary. Understanding that the video is more about the championship rather than a specific player, I think it would have made it easier for me to follow if the players had stayed on the same sides as if we were watching from one perspective - maybe Spassky's as he was the champion at the time?
Gotham thank you for all the amazing content you're providing for us. You make it fun and engaging for everyone to learn chess. We really appreciate what you're doing for the chess world right now. Keep it going my man!
"Bobby Fischer goes to war : how the Soviets lost the most extraordinary chess match of all time" by David Edmonds is a good read. He also covers the inner circle around Fisher to give a balanced view of the whole event. It is more history book than chess book.
@@Rajat_Dhasmana to be fair, the movie wasn't really about chess, it was about Bobby and how his mental state started declining. The acting was fine and I enjoyed the story
@@aleksaprelic9827 lol, really? It's about a world chess champion and you say it's not about chess? What was the reason for his mental health declining? Not chess? In the first game they show after Bxh2 Bobby resigned and stated it as a blunder whereas Bobby missed one idea some moves later which Levy explained very nicely. I feel if you show chess, then show it correctly else don't show it. That's the only reason for queens gambit becoming a success since chess is correct in it.

I was 21 in 1972 and although not a chess ‘player’ I was fully immersed in the politics and mind games. How Bobby withstood all that pressure was unfathomable. But, as you so rightly say, the pressure on that gentleman Boris Spassky was equally oppressive. The games had the headlines in all newspapers across the world and deservedly so. Chess was like tiddlywinks to the uninitiated. I remember it well as one of the ‘sporting’ challenges of my lifetime and it alerted the world to the beauty of the game. Steve
Love this content so much. I’ll probably always be mediocre at chess but the history of it is so lovely and I don’t have to be a GM to appreciate it. Thanks Levy!

I'm just getting to some of the videos from before I subscribed. Just wanted to point out that the "cameras" we are talking are movie cameras with actual reels of film taking film footage for broadcasting later. It had nothing to do with whether they were stationary or mobile. They were likely staionary because the SteadiCam wasn't even invented until 1975. But in reality, Fischer was bent because of his Game 1 blunder and wanted something to blame. But, as someone who has actually bouts of misophonia, it could have been legit. But, you really have to give Spassky a lot of credit for being a true sportsman. I guarantee yielding to Fischer's demands did him no favors with the Soviet government, but he didn't want a hollow title and it allowed the epic to happen.
Technically true, but psychologically it's different. When it is Fischer (who's only a challenger) that demands things, and those demands are met, and he's effectively deciding about the conditions, it becomes HIS match, HIS territory. It's a psychological blow to the ego of the reigning champion. Is it rational? No, but humans aren't 100% rational creatures.
@@vibovitold at the end of the day, no external conditions can effect what happens on the board backstage, with no cameras and little people, 2 people, totally concentrated, disregarding the past, and trying to win the game.
It's fascinating to think about how different both the candidates tournament and the world chess championship would have been had Fischer not played in this cycle. Petrosian, Larsen, Taimanov, all super class act players, all who would've made for an interesting championship against Spassky
Day 89: Of requesting Levy to cover opposite coloured bishop endgames. Especially when you have a slight material advantage of being up by two or three pawns against your opponent and you both have opposite coloured bishops as well.

Very well done, GothamChess, or whatever your name is! I was one year younger than Bobby Fischer, so I followed him from the time he was thirteen and I was twelve until Bobby's death in Iceland. To my mind, Bobby Fischer is "the father of modern chess." He brought chess to the masses and made it a global phenomenon. Also, Fischer had to defeat the entire Soviet chess machine which we now know fixed tournaments in order to ensure that a Russian was world champion. Hence, for both his brilliance over the board and his herculean effort to free chess itself, Fischer will always be the G.O.A.T. in my eyes.
This video was beautiful, the matches combined with the background history is very entertaining! This was maybe the best yet, keep up the great work, you're doing wonderfully!

The down fall of bobby Fischer just makes me sad, I feel like after he became world champion he had nothing else to do with his life and he just slowly went insane.
from the moment he became WC he had nothing to gain and (in his mind) everything to lose. It makes Kasparov's reign triply impressive - his longevity and the way he dominated consecutive generations. Kaspy is the god of chess. Fischer is Loki.
i think it's the opposite. he had already been (kind of) insane, but held it together thanks to chess - and a clear goal he could fixate on. once this was gone, his mind had nothing to hold onto and began falling apart.

I truly appreciate it your summary of the 1972 world Chess championship. I was just a kid at the time but even I remember how big it was for Bobby Fischer to win that championship in the Cold war era.
Imagine if after Fischer asked to play backstage, Spassky just said no
Bobby Fisher would have walked. There wouldn't have been a match. Spassky would have remained World Champion -- but it would have meant little as Fisher had shown he was the best-- crushing everyone he played......
@@snapone2011 Except he hadn't shown it against Spassky and the one game they played Spassky won and then Bobby threw a tantrum. Fischer walking 2-0 down would for sure not have shown he was the best lmao
Maybe we should acknowledge that spassky was a sportsman. High level chess players seem to live for the challenge and less for the politics of the game.
@@TioAceite Fisher was always having as you want put it in "tantrum" mode. But he had at least three things things going for him---he was always fighting to improve chess, it was not unusual for him to walk out in the middle of a tournament fought for more money for the players--he had the highest Fide rating by far, he had proven he was the best by crushing- Petrosian, Korshnoi, Benko, etc Won The US Open 11/0 several times.. Don't know how old you are but I would go to see the candidate matches. Bobby Fisher to chess was like Mohammad Ali was to boxing. He was the best..World Title or not.
@@TioAceite Spassky won three games, two games with white and invalid match (because Fischer did not come). Meanwhile, Fischer won 7 games, 4 games with black. This should show that Fischer is twice better than Spassky like Magnus is twice better than Ian. Bruh

16:00 A brilliant example about how there are two equally important resources in chess; pieces, and positioning. You can be equal or even up on pieces, but without proper positioning, you're actually at a disadvantage.
Much is said nowadays about Fischer, but truth be told... this was the very moment where the World Chess Championship had any matter of mainstream. Bobby with his neurotics and Boris with his sportsmanship. I love this match and a lot of people got into chess because of this moment in chess history.
Here I stand in the early afternoon. While looking with one eye this video and with the other my phone I notice this man's voice. It's so soft, yet firm. Passionate. Loving the thing he does. At this exact moment I realize I love his voice. It brings calmness and serenity over the excitement in the games. I feel like this is the voice that "speaks" to me the most right now.

Just when i was admitting that there was nothing to watch before my commute to work. You have saved my morning Levy. YOU are amazing!

I love it whenever Levy makes Yugioh references in these vids. 😂

"Bobby Fischer goes to war : how the Soviets lost the most extraordinary chess match of all time" by David Edmonds is a good read. He goes deeper into each player using behind the scenes sources in Russia to explain the political mechanisms that interfered in the matches. He also covers the inner circle around Fisher to give a balanced view of the whole event. It is more history book than chess book.
There's a really good movie about Bobby called "The pawn sacrifice". Shows how brilliant and troubled he was at the same time
It's a garbage movie that doesn't even show the games correctly. Better watch Bobby Fischer against the world documentry.

Watching a new levy video has become an hourly routine for me
I was 21 in 1972 and although not a chess ‘player’ I was fully immersed in the politics and mind games.

It wasn't a mistake by Spassky, he should still be willing to play without all the cameras and distractions. That's a more true game
