    I was full of negativity when I started playing this game. But slowly realised there are both highs and lows. The North African campaign was fun, but short. The Skirmish was meh, but the "Total War style" Italian campaign was genuinely fun! And the visuals are so much better than they were.

      Well this is a tough one. I've been playing COH2 for about 1000h now for the last 6 years or so. When u come from that game or even COH1 this game feels like the COD of shooters. Arcadey.
      The sounds may have improved but feedback from hitting enemy units feels lackluster compared to the old titles. For me the biggest red flag was the implementation of the in game store (and with that spending real money). This happened before they fixed major bugs or implemented basic gameplay mechanics (mostly for skirmish). The shop by itself is a joke. The skins u can get there are a joke. U have to buy each skin for almost every Unit. Wanna have a green camo on all your troops? Good luck buying 6+ different Skin packs.
      The new update (over a year after the initial launch) is just weak and only brings 2 new battlegroups which u have to buy or if u are one of the poor people who bought the premium version, get it for free.
      The game just doesn't provide enough immersion and groundbreaking features.
      If u are new to the genre u might find it a solid game. But then don't go back to older titles. U will regret it.

    One of the reasons why CoH I is an RTS evergreen for me is because there are numerous mods for the single player. Mods that not only allow me to play through the campaign again with new units and features, but also add something completely new. Like co-op scenarios or a WWI mod.
    In contrast, the mods in CoH II only worked in multiplayer.
    How do things look in this regard in CoH III?

    • @twiglets2
      @twiglets2  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @besogter_Burger I didn't realise CoH1 had those options when it comes to mods, very interesting.
      So far the mods for CoH3 appear to be community made maps. From what I can tell looking at the Steam Workshop there is very little in terms of the campaign. Though I'm reluctant to judge the quantity / quality of mods for any game that's been out for less than a year too harshly as it usually takes a good few years for any mod scene to find it's feet. Outside of exceptional AAA examples of course.
      Give the lacklustre North African campaign in CoH3 I wouldn't get your hopes up.

    I loved the pause-issue-orders feature, but there were other aspects to the game which I found a little irritating. The deal-breaker, however, had to be the 'camera'. I wanted it to be smoother, and I wanted to be able to zoom right in and right out again. Instead it stayed within a very limited 'height' over the map. So now I'm waiting for 'Men Of War 2'.

    I've played this game's campaign (expert expert) Apart from the skirmishes being more difficult, The defense missions actually triggering and actually having a use for air recon on the main campaign map i don't think enough of a change was made to make the mode anything less than a curiosity. I went back and played COH1 campaign and there isn't a single mission in the Italian campaign that comes remotely close to the ebb and flow of Hill 192 (even the build up to it in the beginning cinematic is like something from a horror movie) Two also had stand out missions like Hunting the Tiger. The overall presentation is still and will probably remain incredibly lacking. Points for trying to polish the game i guess but then i take those points away because of the dlc and it's woeful value for money.

    • @twiglets2
      @twiglets2  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @Gabbagool86 Thanks for sharing in such detail. I think something CoH3 lacks throughout all three components of the game is story. CoH1 had such a great campaign, (personally I thought CoH2's was terrible) and that Hill 192 mission is EXACTLY what I'm thinking of when comparing them. Releasing CoH3 in such a terrible state is unforgiveable of course, and not something to be encouraged, but I do think the game has something to offer those who enjoy (not so) grand strategy or a PVP skirmish experience.
      I really don't see the point of the paid for DLC if you can quite easily obtain the two new battlegroups through in game challenges and currency. Some very strange decisions have been made!
      Thanks again.

    Genuinely though, as someone who bought the game on launch, it's not worth at full price but pretty good when on discount and if you like skirmishes against AI and decent singleplayer content.
    This is mostly due to performance and what you get from it.
    CoH2 is absolutely unoptimized that it's a known thing to always close the game after a couple of matches or so because of memory leak, and it's also well known how the moving backgrounds lag the menus a lot to the point there's a guide to remove the backgrounds which most of the community does.
    In regards to content, over here, CoH2 with all the major DLCs with no discount (Western Front Armies, British Forces, Ardennes Assault) actually costs more than base CoH3 so far. This does not include the commander DLCs or the remaining Theater of War operations which would further make CoH2 cost more for the full game. Hence why I say CoH3 is pretty good for what it offers in terms of singleplayer content when on discount, similar to how CoH2 is better when you have all DLCs and preferably bought it via a bundled discount. If you don't own CoH2, then CoH3 is a pretty good choice in that regard; CoH1 is also a good option but personally only for the story and not the gameplay much as it's a bit dated (not to mention the AI has stronger cheats compared to 2 and 3) but hey it's also cheaper in price due to price drops so trying that one out is also a good choice.
    As for Men of War and Call to Arms players, if you like those games and prefer those, then CoH as a series would be something you won't play much in the end unless they full on transition into that genre. Similarly, I wouldn't expect someone who prefers Wargame or Steel Division to play games in the MoW series or even Hearts of Iron frequently. Of course, you can have multiple preferences so I am saying this in terms of "sticking to one genre" kind of preference.

    I'm a CoH1 and CoH2 "Vet" and loved your review as I haven't played the game and never tried it based on the bad reviews following it's launch. It may sound like a silly question but apart from polishing up the graphics, would you personally say it's improved so much since launch that it's worth it now?
    And how do you think it compares to CoH1 and CoH2? Would it be as enjoyable or still enjoyable but a very different experience?

    • @twiglets2
      @twiglets2  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @Maxrodon Firstly I'd say it isn't worth full price. It's just too expensive. But in a sale with at least a 33% discount it MIGHT be worth it, depending on which part of the game you would enjoy.
      If you enjoyed the campaign of CoH1, the North African campaign in CoH3 simply isn't as good. Not worth it for that alone.
      If you enjoyed the skirmish mode of CoH2, the skirmish mode of CoH3 is decent. Is it better? That depends on how you feel about the changes I highlighted in the video (Battlegroups, breaching etc) If you find those appealing then it MIGHT just be worth it in the sale, but it doesn't feel like a "10 years later" upgrade over CoH2.
      If you enjoy turn based campaigns such as in the Total War series and other grand strategy games then the Italian campaign is ironically the strongest part of CoH3 (now that it's been updated several times). I genuinely enjoyed it.
      The graphics do look much better than they did and the sound is also better, all in all they are at the point where you can call them "decent", no more, no less. The building destruction in particular looks cool in my opinion.
      I hope that helps!

I assume this means they are thinking of balance from a multiplayer perspective rather than single player. If that is the case then it's a shame to let multiplayer balance stop us enjoying a Pacific campaign where balance isn't that important.

    Great video - great review! Ya had me Twiglets - I was sold - right up to the point where a US tank with the TC (tank commander) was shown stuck up through his hatch while driving thru a building with the express purpose of knocking it down. Yeahhhhhh - riiiiight. (having served in the US Army as a tank crewman on M-60A1's in every crew position including TC I absolutely cringed when I watched that. NO efffing way would any TC ever do that while sticking up out of the TC's hatch. Can you say crushed by self created falling rubble. AND that's assuming that any competent TC would ever even do something as stupid as driving thru a building (movie BS) anyway - too much chance of damaging the tank. . Gimme a break. One wonders if game devs ever think about what they create or even invest time in researching what they're creating to verify if it is even feasible. In this case obviously not. This one has to wonder how much other idiotic behavior they programmed in.

    The game may look cartoonish but it was never marketed otherwise.
    I know than for most players who like the WW2 setting (or any military campaign in that matter) the amount of details tied to reality are kinda the main feature of any game
    considering the scale of the affair, but if you are like me who is more amused from the action and the spectacle of battle rather than the context of it this game just fills the spot.
    Of course i would also like to find some pathos through the art style,music and narrative like when they tried in COH2 but that brights problems of another kind.
    In short, COH3 may feels bland in comparison but that may be for the best, to keep the conversation focus on the gameplay.
    There no excuse for the business decisions though and the gameplay still needs some polish, but right now i find it fun (particularly the 2vs2).

      @DeeBestoWepon 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In theory, 3 battlegroups per faction should be the bare minimum. In practice, after at least 60 hours with a faction you should know what to expect from each battlegroup in most scenarios. If you have a preference with a certain faction 3 battlegroups are not enough to prolong the interest indefinitely if you only play one gamemode. Yes, battlegroups are different enough to justify their existence but the bigger problem here is the number of maps per gamemode. If you are a fan of 4v4 you are gonna play the same 3 maps all day, this is gonna make you feel the faction lack of deep but doesn't; it just than scenarios for using them tends to repeat.
      In short, no amount of variety in battlegroups is gonna make the actual number of maps bearable. I would rather prefer be a master of 3 battlegroups in a dozen maps than be a master of a dozen battlegroups in 3 maps. That its of course if you choose to play one faction in one gamemode. (but saddly this is what most COH2 players tends to do).
      In short short, variety in battle groups is fine, but needs more maps per gamemode.
