You truly make some of be best music on this platform. Great videos and information in general and even better use of devices working off of each others strengths. Fantastic stuff.
Really appreciate the narrative overlay. So good for understanding (and appreciating!) what you're doing and great inspiration for techniques to put in my own jams. Cheers!
Very glad you've discovered the MSW-810, fits so nicely in mid low to mid high. As for the tune? Yet again, absolute beauty to behold 🍻. MAW. Hats off to you sir and peace from the UK. Looking forward to the next masterpiece!
OOoooH YeSss !!!! 🤤🤤🤩💥Jay!! Been Waiting for 1 of your Back to The Old Setup of a few classics like the M32 , impact, Miniture & a Clorious assortment of Peddles❤ And What a Tune To Treat us To🤤 Just Love the melodics & chord changes in these jams , So worth the Wait !!!😍😉👍🏆🏆🏆🥇 Thanks Jay .... jaffa jenkins jams😊
Before I read the video description, I thought: The man has definitely trained himself in music theory. and it seems to be true ;-) it was definitely worth it. fantastic track and great chord progression!
Nice track again Jay 🤩 Great setup (probably one of your videos featuring the most gear?) Great use of the DBI's roller bar too (I know it needs a bit of anticipation to hit it right where want it to loop 😅)
That setup looks like an amazing dream I had once. If Rihanna is hanging out off camera in a monokini then it would be exactly the dream! Well... minus a Jv-1080. I want one of those so bad but I really don't need it... Oh yeah, great jam! You never disappoint. Loved it.
Realy enjoyable track. BTW How many devices do you own? I see so many different synths, modules, sequencers, pedals, effects, etc in your videos that you could fill multiple music stores with all of those.
Cool gear, nice sounds & effects; but it would ne nothing without the strong chord progression you came up with. Another great track which will hopefully appear on your next album! As always, thanks for the good music.
What do you like most about Drumbrute Impact? I have one myself, and I love it but, I’ve heard some criticism since its release, though. Some say it only sounds good with effects pedals. In my opinion, it’s a great-sounding machine on its own, incredibly versatile and fun to play live.
Such a sick track as usual. Also love to see some new interesting little bits in this one. What are your thoughts on the M8? I've never used a tracker before but I am enchanted by the idea of a pocket sized groovebox
I love the M8's ability to structure songs. It has this nested pattern/phrase/song structure that makes it really easy to set up longer arrangements. It also has great sounding synths. The biggest drawback is navigating all the pages, especially in sound editing. I wish it had more in the way of performance. But as a pocket device you can make music on? Pretty awesome. Excellent place to start sequencing a project.
Almost gave myself a stroke trying to follow the musical arrangement while keeping up with the visuals and patch notes, but on the second play through I was almost able to handle it. Really cool composition and I hesitate to give it any fault, but I'd possibly enjoyed it more if you'd saved the MSW for the energetic finale!
That was cool, it kind of reminded me of if you could just mash together the movie The Never ending story and the Nintendo video game Castle Mania, that would be what it sounds like too me, anyways that is so cool thanks Jay!!!🤪🤔
I bought it used from a Canadian synth buy & sell. I don't know if MSW is selling with the sequencer anymore. That said, it would be just as useful for me without the sequencer!
It is not the possible options that make music good, but how skillfully you use and arrange them over time. IMO, you could leave more info about the parameters you are changing and throw out details about brands and models.
Where did you get this snazzy looking MSW-810? I don't see this version with the sequencer anywhere - not even the manufacturer's website. Fabulous jam though, I didn't know the Impact had such a great punchy sound. All the synths play well with and off of each other.
The DBI is underrated, in my opinion. Really comes alive when you keep the decay times down. And this MSW-810 run was earlier and short-lived. Honestly, it's the 303 sequencer, which is famously obtuse, so no harm in life without it! This was the one available to me so I snagged it. Sounds great.
Good question. I've noticed this with a bunch of MIDI setups that you'll observe small fluctuations on the tempo indicator. Might just be par for the course when it comes to 5-pin? And thanks!
MIDI sequencers, including DAWs, output subtly irregular clock messages (particularly over USB). There is variation at the millisecond level. MIDI is a serial protocol, so each message is sent and received one after the next. Each message takes around 1ms to read so there's often a little delay introduced when they are read. It's not usually noticeable to human ears though. Devices receiving the clock signals have to calculate the incoming tempo (BPM) based on the time difference between the clock ticks. At 83bpm, that is once every 30 milliseconds, so a variation of 1ms represents a 4% difference in tempo. and that causes the BPM calculation to fluctuate. To combat this, devices (like ARP) often have a smoothing function to reduce the flickering tempo. Even then they are just trying there best to calculate the tempo at 33 ticks per second. That's why it wanders on ARP and it looks like the Brute has a different calculation algorithm, so it fluctuates differently. It's only a display issue though. Individual clock ticks that are long or short won’t make any noticeable difference to the timing as the next tick will correct it. Also, with ARP (and I assume other devices) the MIDI message processing has ultimate priority, to keep the music as in-sync as possible. Less important functions like updating the display have a lower priority.
How do you record this? So many live instruments... I'm trying to figure out cabling (I'm new to synths). Do you just plug in to loads of inputs on your interface?
Yes, just a lot of inputs into the interface. I user a mixer/audio interface combo, which allows you to jam (using it as a mixer) and then record (sending audio to the DAW) when you're ready. I definitely recommend any of the mixer / audio interface devices when you're starting out. The Soundcraft MTK series, Tascam Model series, or Allen & Heath Qu series are all great. Best of luck with your synth journey!
Sounds great and works great. An excellent SH-101 alternative. I could live without the sequencer but I am still looking forward to giving the sequencer a spin in a song.
Four of them are being sequenced by the same setup, and the fifth (the DrumBrute Impact) is set to receive clock from 5-pin MIDI (there's a button for that on the front).
Warning newcomers: don’t get a whole bunch of gear thinking you’ll bang out anything like this. You’ll set yourself back a year or so learning what the difference between midi and audio is and end up kicking your own ass cause all you stuff sounds like very uninteresting accordion music.
Man, those chord changes 😮 it’s your unique voice that tells me almost immediately it’s a Jay track, wonderful as always, thanks
Ooh I didn’t notice the M8 first time around, I’m thinking of doing similar with my Polyend Tracker and modular 👍🏼
Easily in top 3 synth artists on YT. Every upload is a masterclass.

Jay Hosking = Another Level
"It's a lot of cables, but also a lot of fun" pretty much sums up the making-music-with-hardware hobby 🙃
Years ago you did a video on the dreadbox Abyss. It made me go buy one and to this day.......I still own it :D
You truly make some of be best music on this platform. Great videos and information in general and even better use of devices working off of each others strengths. Fantastic stuff.
Once again with a thoroughly convincing argument for why the minitaur is the best sounding synth bass ever
It’s the constant changes of key I love.
Love that you always cover so many price points 😊
This is as 80's as it could possibly be! Brilliant!
Synthesizers are not a hobby. It's the way
Well Spoken,-🤔
Great track, and expert management of multiple pieces of gear at once. Such a hard thing to do without having “crazy arms” on the video.
Yay! Glad to see another big jam setup, I adore every twisty knob and noodly cable. Good vibes on this composition!
Fantastic work! The Midicake Arp really helps with creating and transpose beautiful arpeggios.
This was beautiful and complex which is hard to capture at the same time.
Incredible track Jay!! Beautiful clean setup. Always inspiring.
Wow, that was beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
I love those chords

This bassline reminds me of Portishead - The Rip and I love it! Great jam Jay

Aaaah Jay. Thats just nuts. So good. I love it when you do these. "All in". Indulging you is a pleasure i have. 👍
Sublime. Simply brilliant, technically and artistically.
This is a quality jam! I'm impressed! Just added it to my drive time playlist!
Nice track again Jay 🤩 Great setup (probably one of your videos featuring the most gear?) Great use of the DBI's roller bar too (I know it needs a bit of anticipation to hit it right where want it to loop 😅)
Second video in a row, first time I bump with your videos... and you are getting me! Suscribed.
Awesome, inspiring, and good music too. Thank you for sharing!
Lost in the chord progression…love it!
Awesome job Jay! Thanks for sharing.

Realy enjoyable track.

It sounds to me like a mix of the soundtracks for Fez and Portal 2 combined. Which is a great combination :D Thanks for sharing :)
Masterpiece!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Nice structure !! !! Great work !! !! ✨✨👌👌💯💯
Amazing! You should show us how you set your equipment up and sync everything together
This is the sort of thing I do on my Patreon. Most of the recent videos here have a walkthrough or behind-the-scenes video on there. And thanks!

This Tune has really good vibes, But because of Jay I now own the Mother 32 & Nymphes & I'm broke
Fun!

I think this chord progression isn't done with me yet, so you may get an arrangement closer to what you were suggesting!
That was cool, it kind of reminded me of if you could just mash together the movie The Never ending story and the Nintendo video game Castle Mania, that would be what it sounds like too me, anyways that is so cool thanks Jay!!!🤪🤔
hi friend, where do you find Michigan Synth Works MSW-810 with sequencer ????
I bought it used from a Canadian synth buy & sell. I don't know if MSW is selling with the sequencer anymore. That said, it would be just as useful for me without the sequencer!
@@JayHosking ok thanks
How’s the midi cake? Could be a good substitute- less features obviously but a less expensive option than a Sinfonion? Love your work
I am really enjoying the Midicake ARP. Right balance between immediate, effortless results and musical control
@@JayHosking Nice, thanks Jay

A brilliant composition, Thank you! Tell me, what do you use as a sequencer?
The M8 specifies the chords, the Midicake ARP specifies how those chords are played out across the different voices. And thanks!
@@JayHosking Thanks! It's very beautiful!

Amazing as always. Why is the tempo on the drumbute/Midicake fluctuating?
There's a description in one of the comments below! It's a normal thing.
Nice 1 , Yes Germany Can ... Weed is not a Crime! gr33tz
❤
I'm wondering if the midi cake would work with the tiraiz sp16 so I could play polyrhythms
If the SP16's tracks can be set to different MIDI channels, it should work. But I've never tried it.
Nice, great music, who is the master clock of your setup ?
The M8 is the original clock source. And thanks!
wow, awesome song man! Just wondering, why does the tempo on the midicake and drumbrute move around? is that a glitch?
Good question. I've noticed this with a bunch of MIDI setups that you'll observe small fluctuations on the tempo indicator. Might just be par for the course when it comes to 5-pin? And thanks!

Thanks so much for this explanation! And yes, I never feel it (I had no idea about the smoothing!), so it's only ever been a visual anomaly.
