  • A scene from a video from my childhood: "Real Wheels: There Goes a Train." (I might make a TH-cam Poop of this too!) Near the end is this great railroad crossing scene with the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum's excursion train, hauled by a 1950s United States Air Force MRS-1 diesel locomotive with a great-sounding RS5-T horn. Also note the interesting configuration of the crossing signals.
    (C) 1994 Real Wheels; FAIR USE!

      What I love about this video or two things, the engines horn and the equally special yet very rare Raco hydraulic gate Mech signals the sound that is heard as the gate rises is the sound of the hydraulic workings of the gate mechanism on the signal and I guess one reason why there’s so rare is that they’re complicated hydraulic system is very difficult to maintain their only a few of these in existence by far the only ones I know of are out in Pennsylvania at Cherry Hill Crossing on Strasburg Railroad there used to be a second set that protected Paradise Lane put in recent years in the 2010s They were replaced with WCH gate signals and at this point, I think these distinctive hydraulic signals are very endangered in North America

      The way I remember it the year they did this live action video was 1992 because it was the year that Santa Fe 3751 pulled the railroad's first Employee Appreciation special between Los Angeles and Chicago which was the longest trip to 4-8-4 ever took with a total of 18 days it was also the year when Amtrak had their first P40 Genesis engine delivered probably the best scene is this very scene right there showcasing the distinctive Alco MRS-1 engine 2104 with a Leslie RS5-T horn and to add a little more realism, were the Raco crossing gate signals because I myself have a Raco Crossing Bell in my collection and I've decided the backyard Crossing signal I were to have when I have my own house would be a Raco gate signal so I can use my Raco Bell

    it's not this one, but there is a train horn sound effect that is used frequently the entire there goes a train movie that i'm really trying hard to find a source to. you hear a little bit of it in the prior scene right as it transitions to this one. you hear it at it's at it clearest in the beginning when it shows a red and blue santa fe engines crossing a bridge when he is first showing of the diesel engines.

    • @ZakWolf
      @ZakWolf  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is a stock sound recording that I've heard in a few other places, like in an episode of the 60s Beatles animated series (when they showed a STEAM locomotive, strangely!) I know it's on Sound Ideas' International Sound Effects Library.
      Funny thing is, that horn sound would actually fit with footage of the Acela Express, knowing how noisy their horns can be!
