MULTI-STOREY-ROYAL PALACE OF RANGPUR, SIVASAGAR :
The Talatal Kareng-Ghar is the largest archetecture of Ahom era. It is situated at Joysagar of Rangpur lies in 26057'3'' latitude south and 94037'31'' longitude east. The royal palace was built in the days of Ahom king Rudra Singha by made of woods and bamboos at the privious stage. King Rudra Shingha decided to established the Rangpur Nagar in the year of 1717 A. D. in the Kati month. In the next month he started the work of the town. He dedicated the Nagar after 17 days of Phagun. He started the work of the capital after 12 days of Aaghun and set in the post of the Kareng Ghar in the ground in the year of 1724 A. D. after 12 days of Aaghun.
The palace was made by the mason Ghanashyam Khanikar, and it bears some beautiful sculptural images.
The seven storeyed building was three storeyed underground and four storeyed above the ground. There were two underground tunnels under Talatal Kareng-Ghar. It is Known that one tunnel was streched up to river Dikhow and the another one was streched up to 10 k.m. apart royal palace of Gargaon. There is Garh (boundary) made of brick and Garh-Khawoi (deep cannel) around the Talatal Kareng-Ghar.
According to Archaeological Survey, Bengal Circle,1902-03-"It is a building of irregular shape, consisting of a long flight of rooms running from east and west, with several smaller wings in its northen and southern side. The lower storey apparently served principally as stables, store rooms, servents quarters etc, while the royal apartments were located in the upper storey which has now disappeared for the greater part. In the central northern wing is and octagonal room which is now called as pujarghar. Close to it a portion of royal apartments still exists. It has a stair leading up to the terrace, and the anteroom is covered by a vaulted roof . South of it stands isolated room, believed to have been used by the queen during her confinemant. Another isolated room is the south-western corner of the palace is believed to have been used as a kitchen. The area within which the palace stands is sourrounded by a wall,which is approximately two miles in circumference. Another isolated building inside the area is said to have been used as powder magazine. It is called Kharghor."
