  • Beets are one of the healthiest foods that you can eat, and they're not that hard to grow. We prefer to transplant them to ensure we get precise plant spacing and nice, round beet roots.

I am so glad to have found you guys by watching Danny & Wanda at Deep South Homestead. I am in zone 8b (southern/coastal AL. 45 mile NE of Mobile, AL and 45 miles NW of Pensacola, FL) with super high humidity year-round). I have gotten back into gardening since my retirement but have forgotten a lot of the planting times for crops in our zone. (BTW: I was born in Quitman, GA and my mother's family are still scattered all over GA. My grandmother that I spent summers with as a child lived in Thomasville, GA). My late husband and I used to plant in a larger scale as you guys do but since my retirement and age-related disabilities, I have had to resort to raised bed and container/pot gardening. My soil is mostly clay and iron rock so without the capability to properly amend the soil (plus I just got my old '69 Ford Tractor running) I can't grow IN GROUND just yet...hopefully in the spring if I can get someone to help me. Anyway, I had a couple of packs of beet seeds in my collection so when I was planting my rutabaga's, cabbage, collards, mustard, kale, I decided I would direct sow into the raised bed a couple of the beet seed packs. I was not going to tell anyone that I had done so as I didn't want to be the laughing stock of the gardeners around here or hear "YOU CAN"T PLANT BEETS THIS TIME OF YEAR". Well, they have come up and are about 2 inches tall with two leaves. I watch this video and read the comments and found I CAN PLANT BEETS NOW and can plant them until it gets too hot for them to produce!! WHOO HOO!!! I also have carrots up which no one has been able to grow in this area due to the clay soil being too compact to grow carrots. In a raised bed you can amend the soil the way you wish to give them the soft dirt they need to grow. Never raised carrots or beets so I'm EXCITED I got these two crops (small scale) to sprout and are growing. I just got to thin the carrots as the seeds were so small and my eyesight is not that great so they are quite thick. The beets had few seeds in the packs so I was able to direct sow them and may not have to do too much thinning. I am finding that I am having to RE-LEARN how to garden as the old ways are proving to be not acceptable in this changing climate. My full sun plants (in the old days) are now planted in part sun/shade as the sun literally burned my tomato & pepper plants leaves to a crisp. I pruned them back after I moved them to a new area and they bounced back and produced (very little unless I self hand-pollinated every blossom as I have NO BEE'S!! I planted Lantana to attract butterflies (which brought many beautiful butterflies to my garden this year but also left me with their larva/worms that began eating my peppers, tomatoes, eggplants). Then the drought with our excessive humidity brought on powdery mildew problems so I fought many battles and often just left me scratching my head trying to figure out what to do or what I was doing wrong. MY BRAIN LITERALLY HURTS trying to remember when to plant, what to plant, when to harvest (garlic & onions are a big problem for me to grow to any size other than green onion size). I am almost finished building my NEW greenhouse (hope to finish before this next super cold front comes thru next week bringing temps at night into the upper 20's-UNHEARD OF FOR OUR AREA THIS TIME OF YEAR!!!) I have huge pots of ginger that I don't want to die plus 9 fig trees I successfully transplanted from the mother tree but roots are still too delicate to put in the ground. I am also going to try to raise my 3 best tomato & bell pepper plants as well as my 3 eggplants that are still producing blooms and baby eggplant since I pruned the plants back. I have a couple of full-spectrum grow lights and will need a source of heat for the greenhouse but I AM DETERMINED to grow fresh veggies thru the winter. (Plus all my herbs that are still doing well in my tiny plastic storebought greenhouse). Is there any brochures available for temp requirements for different vegetables, growing days, when to plant and when to harvest for specified zones? I know a lot of newbie gardeners that have asked me the same question. Growing beets is a good example in that I had no clue that they could be planted now and all thru spring. Most seed packets say to plant after all danger of frost, etc. That tells me NOTHING for my zone. I know growing my own veggies will be essential for survival in the coming uncertain times of our country and the GSM weather conditions so do you offer seed/transplanting times, days til harvest, temp requirements, when to harvest etc., or could you make a chart/brochure for our zone 8(a,b) to help us that are trying to become self-sufficient? I also want to THANK YOU for all the video's full of valuable info that you take the time to make for us wanna-be gardeners. I have got to start checking out some of your older vid's before I became a subscriber here to see if there is something ELSE new that would help me in my ventures of gardening. YOU GUYS AT HOSS TOOLS ROCK!!!! PS, I ordered some elephant garlic last night so I'm looking forward to getting it to get it planted! Blessings to you and much prosperity to HOSS TOOLS & your families!!

Direct seeding works well too if consistent size is not important to you. Most beet varieties are multigerm, which means each seed produces 2-3 plants. You can thin them if you want evenly sized beets, or just let them grow in bunches.
