Psychic Detective is one of the games that I had as a kid and I had no idea what I was doing. Watching it back it's apparent that it's actually a lot more enjoyable than I thought. I was expecting it to be a puzzle game with complex mechanics but it's actually a screwball comedy choose your own adventure game and it's hilarious.
@@themysteri0usstranger there's literally only one point where you can get a game over and even if you lose you get a unique cut scene based on what you did before, so there's a reward for doing it. The puzzle is not explained at all but you could easily get to the point where you can't lose unless you deliberately choose to after a couple of runs. If you kept notes on which pieces win in each encounter you could pretty much win regardless of what you do because you get to pick your pieces first and the board is composed only of things and people that you encountered in that specific run, so the Ben Kingsley lookalike will always be at a massive disadvantage once you know how it works because he can't surprise you with anything unexpected. I want to be clear, it's actually pretty good at what it's trying to be, but it's definitely not anywhere near as complicated or difficult as it first appears when you're going into it with no context and menu icons just keep appearing and disappearing before you can work out what's happening.
@@themysteri0usstranger sorry, I realised that you may have meant complex in a narrative sense and I would agree with you a bit more in that sense. If you were interested in a game that takes a similar approach to its storytelling but refines it and improves upon the execution I'd recommend Who's Lila? The same core idea is there with it being a murder mystery being told through making decisions that alter the course of the story but it benefits from making every outcome hold equal weight to the story. The story is a bit harder to get your head around because it extends beyond the confines of the initial murder mystery and into philosophical stuff about the nature of reality and how we construct our sense of self.
Watching Jerma try and play Immercenary actually made me download and beat it myself. Took about 5 hours and most of that time was just spent on heavy grinding, as you need to be at certain stat levels to take down the game's 11 No More Heroes-like bosses. While it wasn't really a fun game, it was definitely pretty interesting and also definitely one of the better experiences you can have on the 3DO.
I'm surprised Jerma hasn't played Tender Loving Care, its a slightly obscure FMV dvd game kind of like Psychic Detective but a lot more down to earth and dramatic. I'm sad we don't get cool experimental stuff like this anymore, a choose your own adventure game where you have to do detective work by jumping around people's FMV perspectives????? Holy shit that's such a cool idea
there was a recent FMV game called Not For Broadcast where you're running a TV station in the midst of a fascist regime which was really good. you have to watch multiple cams and bleep or edit things as they happen live, had a pretty fun story and characters too.
@@ChewyTwee have you checked out Who's Lila? There's a lot of similarities to the narrative style of this game, except the different paths are selected by doing facial expressions and influencing the way people react to your character. It's definitely a really unique game and if this game interests you then I think that you might get a kick out of it. It's a much less comedic story, but the facial expressions have to be manually performed by moving parts of your character's face manually, so it does get a bit silly nonetheless.
I like it, I love it, I want some more of it. I try, so hard, I can't rise above it. Don't know what it is 'bout that Jeremy's lovin', but I like it, I love it, I want some more of it
was NOT prepared for that first game to be so unrelentingly crazy so fast. i'd love to see a reboot starring Fred Armisen and Jennifer Tilly, they'd kill these performances
Why is every game on the 3DO a goddamn fever dream?
THIS IS THE WRONG STREAM TO FALL ASLEEP TO
Damn I guess I'll find out soon
I'll report back if I get horrific nightmares
@@obese5094any nightmares?

No way did I just find you organically
@@RiffwraithLad wtf i cant believe its my cherished friend from The War
Big W for us
This is my favourite vein of content, weird niche game packs.
Same here, I love when Jerma has to play the straight man compared to old and batshit video games
same, I have no idea wtf is going on in this game rn and I love it.
seeing jerma trying to guess what's going on is so funny for some reason
Starting to see why the 3DO failed if it had only games like these.
if there is a youtube rewind i guarantee jerma long edits is going to be 99% of the thousands of hours I have on here
i feel so damn dumb with psychic detective i'm so confused by everything happening lmfao 😭
Jerma at the end of his last run on that game: "lady destroys red square, right?"
Me: "sure buddy, just click something"

i mean it's still kinda a puzzle, game looks complex to me, well compared to modern gaming.
