Box cutters and utility knives are often underestimated as a threat because they are not a purpose built weapon such as a dagger or other fighting blade. However, several factors make them something to be aware of. They are cheap and widely available. They are very difficult to see, either concealed on a person or during the chaos of a fight. Some of them provide a very strong grip. The slashing strikes of these weapons produce a lot of blood as well as fear and panic.

box cutters can be amazingly sharp. i once was opening a box being careless and the blade slipped out of the cardboard and i felt it touch my hand. i was almost certain i was going to have a nasty cut but i looked at my hand immediately and saw nothhing and felt no pain. so i continued what i was doing and a few seconds later i felt something wet on my hand. the blade was so sharp i didnt initially notice or feel a thing. 20 plus stitches and almost to the bone. 10 years later and i still have very little feeling from nerve damage.

UPDATE 9/12/2020: I'm going to summarize this video, because TH-cam keeps promoting it and it leads to terrified people getting triggered before they listen to what is being said. What I said in the video is that you should be aware of the possible danger of getting attacked by a utility knife. Utility knives are cheap, widespread, easy to conceal, and produce horrific wounds. That is all. I do not support any sort of ban on utility knives, such a ban would be impractical, and utility knives are vital cutting tools for a variety of working trades.

Actually in the eyes of the law and judge and jury, it would be far wiser to carry a good utility knife as an improvised weapon, only because when you carry a "Scary" or "Tactical' looking knife in the sole purpose as a weapon, you will face the court in your state and possibly a jury. The prosecutor will slam you because of that and they'll put your intentions under a microscope. Especially if your blade caters to Zombie Killers. You know, the green handle, blood splatter paint blade. Or a heavy duty large tactical blade with a sawback and knuckle guard handle. They'll question why you even brought that to the fight, but if you just have w simple ( quality ) utility knife and use it for self defense, then you can bring a strong defense table to the court, stating you always have it BECAUSE ITS S TOOL not a weapon. See?

    • @vocartagmailcom
      @vocartagmailcom ปีที่แล้ว +2

Taking utility knife to the club or place where you won't need that may look the same as taking there a tactical knife, it's out of place, it would look like preparing to fight. Axe or machetes are also 'tools' but no one takes them out of the context of using them.

Thanks for posting the advice. I can attest to the value personally. While out late in Amsterdam years ago I was robbed. When surprised, I 'half drew' a Spyderco Endura from by waist (grab the hole and delpoy, handle locks on the way) but shifted to open hands when I saw no weapon. In the tussle he drew an X-Acto snap-off knife. I gave him pocket change and he ran away. Win-Win but I know to watch for those now. The idea of that snapped off in my gut was worse than facing a 'real' blade.

I use one at work to open boxes; I just keep it on my belt all day, every day. Never am I unarmed. I can draw it off my belt and flick it open in a second. The razor-sharp blade can cut anywhere on an opponent's body. It can slice through clothing, skin, muscle, and tendons. It is light, can be thrust and slashed fast at an opponent's face, eyes, neck, hands, arms, legs, etc. A little blood drawn from some scumbag who wants to assault me should change their cowardly mind in a hurry. I edc a foldable Cobalt carpet knife everyday and I have used it on people before when I had to I keep the blade kind of nasty on purpose meaning Rusty dirty whatever it's surprisingly effective when you cut someone across the face or the nipple they don't want to fight you ever again

On some utility knifes you can set the blade to be not as far out which would be good if you cut your self, but even then they are still very dangerous.

Thanks for the Heads Up. Someone just being aware of the possibility of a box cutter being used on them, may allow them to make decisions that could save their lives. Like keeping the assailant beyond arms reach, using something as a shield or just running like hell. Good video.

I sharpen my knifes as a sort of hobby though I don't use them much, I can get them damn sharp with some of my higher grit stones. But, some of the higher end utility knife blades are f***ing sharp beyond what I can make mine. Not that it would matter much when getting slashed, but still it's scary.

I've seen the kind of damage a box cutter can ,cuts threw flesh like a hot knife threw butter and after making a cut the flesh will literally split from the slash ,the razor might not be as strong as a well forged knife. But the cutting edge is almost like a surgeon's scafell!

I know this is a rare occasion but the overall fragility of the blades can be a hazard. I had one snap on me while stripping wire (don’t judge) and it sliced my cheekbone pretty good. So thankful it wasn’t my eye.

That’s an excellent point and an important thing for people to remember. There is that old saying “hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.” People often forget the “hope for the best” part! I think this gets into the whole idea of “balance.” I do believe that balance can be achieved, such as being aware but also upbeat and positive, know what I mean?

100% knives are more dangerous than guns. While a gun does cover an incredible range, it gives away your position where as a knife is incredibly easy to hide and is completely silent.

I've never doubted the lethality of a box cutter. We all know of arm slitting as a suicide method, well a box cutter making a nice vertical slice up the forearm, its plenty long enough for it, also long enough for hitting the jugular. The ones with the snap off blades could possibly even make for a stabbing type weapon although perhaps with limited utility to do so considering the breakaway lines, other box cutters lack the length to do so.
Any weapons lethality should never be doubted. It may be easier to kill a man with a sword than a simple box cutter like in the opening of this video, but that doesnt make it impossible. A .22lr can still incapacitate or kill a person, christ even a UK legal air rifle (above a certain power they are registered as firearms instead) could kill a person with a well placed shot. The neck alone is rather exposed and yet still contains the 2 carotid arteries (each further splitting within the skull) and jugular veins, blocking of just 1 carotid can cause stroke or fainting, of course should you be incapacitated and with a bleeding neck, fatality is likely without good urgent medical attention.
I love firearms. I work with a box cutter daily. But no blade or projectile weapon should ever have its ability to harm doubted.

Working in the construction industry, we use our utility knives constantly on wood, plastic, tile, pipe, tarpaper, carpet, you name it, they are absolutely indispensable, but if you are going to be fighting, show some class, use a proper folder at least, preferably one with rosewood scales and brass bolsters.

A similar thing happened to my friend. He was waiting at a bus stop in the middle of Birmingham (UK) city center, and a random guy just went up to him and slashed his face with a utility knife. No altercation of anything, just a completely random attack. He now has a huge scar on his cheek.
He's not my only friend with a large scar on his cheek from a utility knife either. I have a friend who i met when we were working together in a factory. He needed a utility knife but they were all in use by other people, so he decided to make one by taping a utility blade to a ruler. He finished wrapping the tape around, and brought it up to his mouth to cut the tape by biting it. When the tape gave way, the blade sliced his cheek open. Lucky it wasn't his eye.

A family friend of ours got in a fight at McDonalds. I’m in Australia too.
The other guy pulled out a utility blade and stabbed him in the forehead 3 times.
He’s ok now but I agree, they’re easy accessible, cheap and sharp.
Our knife laws are very strict but they need to be changed so that sensible knife users don’t get caught up in it. Most knife crimes are committed with kitchen or utility knives.
You rarely hear of someone getting stabbed with a Spyderco or Benchmade.
