The balance between Morality and Science is intricate, requiring of thought. Politics needs both information to achieve progress.Thank you Bertrand Russell.
I was thinking the same thing. It seems that if you believe in myths that don't track reality , you are more likely not to think critically leading to many vices. It is not being an Atheist that makes one be a good person, but makes them less likely to be a bad one.
At 19:36 he commits a substantial error of ignorance by stating "I cannot think of anything mankind has gained by the existence of Genghis Khan" (the rest of what he says about "the qualities of these men" is spot on) --- GK introduced so many of the mores we still aspire toward in meting out justice and fairness, he rocked the world in his perceptions of right and wrong compared to any contemporary civilizations of his time. The hiccup in this is you first had to submit to his rule unconditionally, but once a people did, they were treated as equals. GK employed and had in his court all of the world's major religions, all were allowed to practice their faiths and indeed GK had a large proportion of Christians in his court. The guy was amazing considering his origins of no formal education whatsoever. A definitive biography of Genghis Kahn is Jack Weatherford's "Genghis Kahn and the Making of the Modern World." It is a riveting account of what really happened in those days of yore. It is no way an aspersion I'm casting at Professor Russell for not knowing this, having these lectures available is a true treasure and allows us to peer into his quite brilliant and prescient mind that is so pertinent to today. I thank you for uploading them. Profusely.
I understand what you are saying but I cannot see where you are coming from. Genghis Khan's rule might have been meritocratic but he committed mass killings that wiped out wide swaths of the human population of that time on a scale that is still almost unrivaled to this day. He destroyed cities like Baghdad, which were major cultural and intellectual centers just because their kings/rulers refused to submit to Mongol rule. He was a serial rapist as well and took thousands of women against their will after probably killing their father, sons, and brothers. So like Russell, I find it hard to see what good really came from his legacy as well.
Yes, it's the first person ever that considers the natural impulse for violence and the need for violence in humans and how to satisfy it, to avoid wide scale suffering. I said first time, but that exclude myself, because i have always realized the existence of that need in humans by observing how people crave for violent movies and everyone must admit that watching a documentary about a great past catastrophe with high casualties leaves one with a sense of peace and satiation.
@@goognamgoognw6637 If you observe, even Laurel and Hardy is based on violence and laughing at the misfortunes of 2 idiots. I didn't enjoy it that much when I saw it again at 30 years of age. I was actually moved to pity than laughter.
That's not necessarily true. I've met evil from all walks of life. I understand your point, however. It is easier to be arrogant and hateful when you feel justified by the highest power. Cheers
dude tho i agree with you on the antitabaco stance you cant dismiss some one for that, and you have to take into a count the chronological context. in that time it wasnt known the harm of tabaco. it is easier to dismiss the opinion some one that rigidly disregard the knowledge and wisdom of other for lesser concerns.
How close-minded of you. Bertrand Russell was a man of serious moral and intellectual character. Even by today's standards smoking a pipe has negligible effects on the environment, especially compared to the 10,000 more serious things in our air.
OK but every drop counts for forming an ocean ., it may be negligible when compared to total environment , but a person sitting just in front of him a meter away ,the smoke pipe is just like an an exhaust duct in a cement plant . may the Nobel prize go to good genuine people.
james kutty Joseph You have been mislead to believe that second hand pipe-tobacco smoke is the same as industrial chemical pollution. I think Bertrand Russell did more to promote peace in the world than either of us.
OK . no problem brother . i believe GOD more than Russel . thank you for your comments. i noticed that you are a soft spoken good man . my aim is to support the love of GOD for people who are hurt and suffering with out hope.. having mislead by SATANIC WORLD sir, i am sorry you are hurt by my comments.

Give that man a light.

Lol
Yeah, that hiccup.
The greatest discoveries regarding the criminal mind have come about from the dissection of the English aristocrats brains.
Highly interesting

Native American spirituality or shamanism is 35,000 years old the only spiritual construct that works…. 💯
17:10. To slave for their captor. Recall lecture 2 calling for the need for economic entomologists.
27:15 lol, I wonder if Russell considered Hitler when he wrote this.
Bob Dylan.
Henry Wolf.
By thinking critically do you mean "to believe anything science community says"?
