From what I understand animator, ub iwerks had a strange sense of humor. When Walt Disney instructed him to make a "funny animal band" for this, that's what he came up with.
Oh yeah. And if you think he is here, you should watch "Plane Crazy" the other Mickey cartoon from 1928 that is also on the public domain since Jan. 1st 2024. Just what he does to Minnie in that one would be enough to put Mickey on a watch list.

It’s mostly people want to stick it to corporate Disney, who lobbied to extend copyright laws so they could keep Steamboat Willie out of the public domain. Now that their extended time has run out, the floodgates have been opened.

It's still amazes me that you animated this whole cartoon by yourself. Not only that, you did the music, sound effects, and voices completely independently. And it looks authentic to that early cartoon aesthetic you were going for! This deserves an award.

The fact that we're living in an age where we all can finally use most of the 1910's-1920's Felix The Cat, Oswald, and Mickey shorts and their character designs is crazy. I seriously can't wait to see some genuinely creative stuff with those three in the future.

@@shaneshaneno3shanehe279Of course you can, he is older. Just make sure you don't confuse copyrights with trademarks and he's perfectly fine to use. (Even the names, clothing, and colors) Just make sure you don't take anything from after 1928 this year though and keep counting up the years after every other year passes. For example, the next prominent Disney characters in line is Pluto and Clarabelle in the next two years since they were introduced in 1930. (And yes technically speaking "Clarabelle" has been around since Steamboat Willie, but she wasn't named yet and couldn't stand on two feet)
Also, next year I believe we will be able to use Mickey with his gloves and plane crazy with sound, because both of those were introduced in 1929
@@Pancakenaut Actually, we can already use Mickey with both gloves and his iconic colors thanks to his promotional posters from 1928-1930 by Ub Iwerks. One of the very first ever made depicts him as having red shorts, yellow gloves, white buttons, brown shoes, and pie shaped eyes as a matter of fact: img.huffingtonpost.com/asset/5be36cb91d00008500311dc9.jpeg?ops=scalefit_720_noupscale&format=webp There were other color schemes used as well, such as the colors we know of today and even green pants with yellow gloves and orange shoes since that's what he had for his first plush toy. The same situation of multiple color variations applies to Minnie as well. And let's not forget that Mickey already wears gloves in the title and ending cards, along with striped pants. Besides, I don't care what people arguing for Pooh will say, you cannot copyright or trademark a color scheme and/or a plain t-shirt. You can use Pooh with a plain red t-shirt all you want, you just can't explicitly use Disney's designs for any of the characters that were drastically altered for 1966 onward, like Tigger for example. We will be able to use Daisy, Chip, and Dale long before that can happen. *Lol*
We will also be able to use the classic depictions of Goofy and Donald within the next 6 years, and the "modern" Mickey and Minnie designs within the next 10 or 11 years since they first popped up in 1939.

I'm not going to lie, Steamboat Willie entering the public domain is the best thing Disney gave to everyone (although unwillingly) for its 100 year anniversary.
Even with the amount of restrictions, its like Prometheus giving fire to the humans in Greek mythology; there's just so much oppurtunity for people to make new content out of him (video games, new animated characters, satire etc).
I have never seen steamboat willy before so this will forever be the 'correct' version in my head
