Harjinderpal Singh Matharu is among Europe’s leading santoor players. He studied Punjab gharana tabla in his youth, but after impressing Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji Maharaj, the leader of the Namdhari Sikhs, it was arranged for him to study under santoor legend Shivkumar Sharma in Mumbai. He now performs and teaches, using his santoor’s hundred strings to further the art of Gurbani Kirtan (Sikh devotional music).
Yogesh Samsi is one of India’s leading tabla soloists, pushing the instrument’s boundaries and furthering the work of his guru Alla Rakha. Son of esteemed singers Dinkar Kaikini and Shashikala Kaikini, he began playing at age six under Taranath Rao, a guru renowned for his knowledge of rare and ancient talas. At age ten he commenced a 23-year discipleship under Alla Rakha, building a distinctive command of the Punjab gharana. He has accompanied a broad sweep of top Hindustani artists, as well as touring widely and visiting the UK each year to teach his own tabla curriculum. Listen to more of Yogesh here:

Patdeep is an afternoon raga. It draws from Kafi thaat, with an aroha [ascent] of nSgmPNS and an avroh [descent] of SNDPmgRS. The vadi [king note] is Pa, and the shuddha Ni differentiates it from the similar Raag Bhimpalasi. It somewhat resembles the Carnatic Raga Gowrimanohari. Absolutely beautiful and a revelation. I knew Shiv Kumar Sharmaji well, and for 4 decades. His disciples such as Matharuji are keeping his legacy alive.

The main feature of Santoor performance is its rhythmical section as no Mend is possible, so the emphasis must be put on rhymical play which gels nicely with Tabla. It was originally a folk instrument which Pt.Shiv Kumar Sharma popularised in the 60s.
