Nobody give him credit for what he have done for Chelsea still remember him winning the Champions league for Chelsea against 1 of the best Bayern Munich sides . And to name a couple more 2x Premier leagues and Europa League he was one of the underrated defenders in his time

It's the defending part which let him down. He was doing very well during his first stint at chelsea. He still retained his ball playing ability but he's not really consistent enough for a defender. He steps up when the team needs him tho.
Actually he is not pure CB His original position was DMF in Benfica If he keep playing in DMF position he is much better than Casimiro, Kante, Makelele, Guttuso, Roy Kean, Kimmich, Varetti and etc.. mangers changed him to play CB
