One of the best things about Iam Tongi, in my opinion, is that he used his platform to elevate the music of other Pacific Islander artists. He didn’t have to do that. It would probably have been “safer” to play music that mainstream audience members would recognize. But, he chose to bring his community with him.
This is what it looks like to embody the idea that when one of us wins, we all win. What a good dude.💕

This song embodies how life is like for kids in Hawaii. Exactly. After school (if we never cut class) we would go hang out at the beach! Sometimes we go and hang out at our friends or cousins house with our boards or diving gear before hitting Yokohama or Makaha Surfing Beach. Mahalo for your exciting and happy reaction to Iam's vid and Aloha from Hawaii!

Hello again you beautiful two. I believe that the recent reveal and response to IAM TONGI, the American Idol winner 🏆, is the most significant one to date. Even Carrie Underwood received fewer votes and worldwide attention in comparison. This season is sure to be remembered for years to come 🌟.

I love your reactions they are fun and insightful. Islanders all love lay back style so reggae from Jamaica is loved amongst all the islands of the Pacific. There are reggae bands throughout Polynesia but especially Aotearoa (New Zealand) and Hawaii with many bands on the mainland (US). I believe in the late 80's early 90's Jawaiian Music was coined (Jamaican-Hawaiian) referencing reggae as the influence of the music played with Ukulele making it unique in its way also. Since then many groups have been formed and the music is loved and enjoyed throughout the islands. Those very same groups (bands) play at graduation parties, weddings, birthday parties, hotels, beaches, parks and concerts. This is local style music not Hawaiian music which is also awesome but different from what you are hearing I'm sing. Hawaiian music you can look up artists like Keali'i Reichel, Makaha Sons of Niihau, Ho'okena, Gabby Pahinui, etc. vs Local Style reggae groups like Kolohe Kai, The Green, Ma'oli, Kiwini, Ho'aikane, Braddah Waltah, Three Plus, etc. and others that do a blend of genres Kapena, Willie K, Josh Tatofi, Anuhea, Fiji, and many more. Enjoy looking them up and listening to some of the talented artists we enjoy here in Hawaii.

Hawaiian Pidgin was formed in the early 1900’s when the sugar plantation and pineapple plantations came here. The plantation workers were Hawaiians, Filipinos, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese and Koreans who couldn’t speak each other’s languages, but they all spoke broken English. Every culture added their own words from their native language to Hawaiian Pidgin. Hawaiian Pidgin is broken English

In the early '80s, Reggae found a niche in thenHawaiian music scene. In the beginning, we couldn't quite get the groove/feel of Reggae or Ska or One Drop. Hence our interpretation became what we called "Jawaiian". Eventually we caught on and it's become the most popular genre in our state. Thanks to our fellow island peoples of Jamaica.

Pidgin English or Hawaiian Creole by some language experts, is a conglomeration of many different languages.
During Hawai'i's early years of immigration of people from other countries, most especially during the plantation days, is most likely when Pidgin started.
So... when Kanaka Maoli (Hawaiians) were trying to learn & speak English, they had some difficulty early on due to the differences between the languages.
Like brother became 'braddah' and "How are you?" or "How is it going?" became 'howzit?'. For example.
Then over the years, with the introduction of the Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, and Filipino immigrants, their words began to eventually mix in and Pidgin would evolve into what we know today.
In fact, it's also because of the Plantation days & immigrant families that we have what people in Hawaiʻi know as "Plate Lunches". That's another long story. 😅
