I am charged for domestic battery and cruelty to a child because while arguing with my husband I hit him using baby receiving blanket and he was holding our baby. I have a public defender but it’s difficult to reach out to him and talk to about my case. I wonder how serious my case is? (No criminal record, my very first time).

Inability to speak to one’s attorney is a complaint we commonly hear about. By now, your lawyer should have informed you of the worst case scenario and what the the DA’s Offer is. Domestic battery and cruelty to a child are serious enough offenses to warrant jail time in some instances. Equally as important, it’s not ideal to have those types of offenses on your RAP sheet because of the negative impact they’ll have on your life (applying for jobs, housing, student loans, etc.). If you need to go in another direction with your defense, it’s worth consulting with an attorney to explore your options.
