Plain St. Paul sandwich is my favorite with hot braised chicken, half order of plain fried rice (bean sprouts, scallions, onions, scrambled egg, dark soy sauce), crab rgoons/egg rolls and strawberry Vess Soda. !! Any place off Natural Bridge or North Grand (not trying to endorse any specific places lol)

Miss the St. Paul sandwich of Saint Louis while I'm in Chicago! I do believe the classic ones only have onions and pickles on them! I've never been to an inner city Chinese spot in STL that served them with lettuce or tomatoes but your creation still made my mouth water! Thanks for posting! I was researching the best method to recreate them! The baking powder is probably the key! Thanks again!

Watching this while I make my first pho with omasum. I made the broth from beef bone and beef feet (cut up beef feet) and chuck ribs. Toasted the onion and ginger on broil, the whole 9 yards. There's a latin market near me that sells everything from burnt goat heads to frog's legs, to conch, to brains.

I'm living away from St. Louis, and St. Paul sandwiches and St. Louis style fried rice are two things I really miss. If your arteries don't clog you ain't makin' it right. I used to get them at House of Chu, which was on Delmar, just east of the Delmar Loop. Place probably not there anymore, because the old chinese guy that ran it was old back in the late '70's and early '80's when I was old enough to drive there and get it. I was from further east, kinda near St. Luke's hospital. That might not be there anymore either. I was born in that hospital, and I think I could smell the St. Paul sandwiches cooking down the street from that day forward. You born or grew up in St. Louis, you know you gotta have it.

I grew up in St. Louis. One of our friends, C. C., would get sent on food runs by his mother. In that part of St. Louis, everyone, and I mean everyone, called the Chinese takeout restaurants, the "China man." It means Chinese takeout in the community there. And it is all you had to say. C. C. would typically order shrimp fried rice topped with egg foo young gravy (you had to have the gravy or the fried rice was too dry). He would order a duck leg and a "special "St. Paul sandwich which came with a little of seemingly every kind of meat: ham, shrimp, beef, chicken. Those were the days. The thing is, I can't remember when we started eating egg foo young on bread--it just happened. And it was just plain sliced white bread, not even toasted. Sometimes, maybe most of the time, it was wrapped in wax paper. The place we went to the most was at or near the corner of Pennsylvania and Page. I have no idea what happened to this restaurant, and for all I know it is still there. Another place was located on Olive in University City. It is called Chong Wah, and is still open for business. Anyway, I enjoyed your video. Update! The place on Page at Pennsylvania is still there. It is called Chung's Chop Suey and is cattie-corner form a Popeyes Chicken. Chung's Chop Suey is an odd old building, made entirely of cinder block, and white-washed. The back of the restaurant faces page; so you can't see the front entry from the street. It used to have a rotating, plexiglass lazy-susan kind of food delivery system which was see-through. No chairs, no tables--just order and go. Lots of these in St. Louis.

I don't feel like they know what good Chinese food is here so I've been finding recipes and making things myself. I never could figure out why people from Cleveland thought East st. Louis was in St Louis until I moved here and found out they have an East Cleveland that's in Cleveland. I had to explain to them that East Saint Louis is in Illinois.
