I’ve been waiting for them to do a Good rock album on their High Fidelity series, ever since I got that one. So I jumped all over this one. 👍

I just ordered this 2 min ago after watching your video. I have all the Cars albums on vinyl. Candy-O to me sounds better than the first album on my old originals that I bought all those years ago. MoFi has Candy-O listed as awaiting repress. However, they do still have the first album and I'm going to order it from them.
I've always slightly preferred Candy-O to their first album. The tracks on that first album just got played to death on FM radio (and everywhere else seemingly) which probably has a lot to do with it. People like to crap on those Mo-Fi Cars pressings but I think they all sound pretty good, and better than the originals which also sounded good to begin with. Don't hesitate in picking them up if you can get them at a decent price.
Yeah they were played to death because they were Awesome! One of the best debut albums in rock history. Side 2 never gets old. Anyway My reply was in reference to the Sound of the debut Rhino High Fidelity pressing. Absolutely amazing.
Completely agreed, the word for this pressing is "BALANCED"! Cars on the FM, cassettes, and cd's for me were always very backbeat forward and so far KG mastering on this and the self titled places the vocals and instrumentation (respectively) in perfect balance with one another...it just sounds more cohesive than what I grew up with. Also agreed - you cannot play this pressing quietly, total hurricane of a pressing! Great review & enjoy your personal notes!
My copy had several skips during the first two tracks. Rhino sent me a replacement, but that one also skipped through the first two songs. Cleaning the discs didn't help. Played it on my friend's turntable and although it didn't skip, there were very loud pops were the skips were.
I currently own 4 copies of Candy-O. A first press US, no sticker or text, a US second press with sticker, a third US press with printed text, and the 2017 Ric Okasek supervised deluxe (ADA) reissue. So, I’m anxious to get my Rhino HiFi version next week and give it a spin. That said, I always thought the OG pressings sounded great, if you just turned the bass contour knob up a smidge.
Also, an interesting decision by Rhino to add the band name and album title to the cover in the upper left corner. The original pressing jackets, like mine, were unnamed except for on the spine. If I remember correctly there was an clear sticker on the outside of the shrink-wrap on the original release that had the band name and album title on it that looked very similar to Rhino what has done on their new jacket.
Waiting eagerly for my copy from Rhino, but enjoyed your review. The series from Rhino so far has been impressive in the total presentation - and in what matters most - the sound. Can’t wait to crank this up!!! Thanks for the review, Mike!
Interesting comparison! Oddly enough a local friend reported back to me he suspected the Rhino Candy-O sounds borderline bright and bass-shy which is not far from what you are saying - except for it being a matter of degree. Clearly you are listening through two different systems and have your own set of biases. His system could be bass-shy and a bit more neutral than yours and yours might be more full-range and more forgiving on top which could explain why you think it is more "perfectly balanced" sounding. I have not had an opportunity to hear this Rhino yet but I do remember a similar bright-ish sonic signature on the first The Cars/The Cars Rhino High Fidelity edition which was not to my liking. I felt the Nautilus Recordings edition was far better. My buddy will be visiting me this coming week and will be bringing his Rhino/Candy-O to shootout against my Nautilus Recordings/Candy-O and perhaps a couple of other pressings which may include the MOFI edition. @@MikesVinylExperience The shootout went down and the three members of the listening panel (myself included) much preferred the MOFI edition. We found the Rhino too thin and bright. In some ways the OG was also preferable for its musicality. I don't know if you know fellow TH-camr Scott Wilson of @ThePressingMatters and go check out his Candy-O video that went live a couple of hours ago. He even provides HQ digital rips of two of the songs ("Let's Go" and "It's All I Can Do") for download so people can hear for themselves what's what. Who knows? Many might still choose the Rhino and this will be highly dependent of everyone's hearing as well as how their systems are tuned. Cheers!

Being given #4203 on a very first day order is sad. I can guarantee you that the knuckle-draggin' goobers at the Rhino warehouse aren't paying any attention to matching up numbered copies of these releases to when the orders actually came in. More like last numbered copy in (#5000) is the first one out. With Rhino consider yourself lucky to even get yours. I ordered Candy-O at 8:00 a.m. of day one and I still don't have mine.
I have thought about playing the albums but I would want to invest in proper equipment to record it and then jump through whatever hoops you would need to do to get rights to do that. The latter being the most difficult i would guess.
You and I are the same vintage, Mike! This was one of my favourite albums from my high school days, and well, The Cars ....what more can you say!! 👍😊

I’ve heard that the jackets are numbered BEFORE the records are assigned to them, so lower numbers means nothing as to pressing order.
