I'll die on my high horse that victory piece was criminally underrated. I ran a darkrai with a 1-1 victini/piece, and the tempo it provided to start swinging turn 1 without an energy attachment was incredible.

Computer Search is just such a good card that any Ace Spec, past or present would struggle to compete with it. Maximum Belt is probably my favorite of this first new wave because a basic damage boost was surprisingly absent from the original Ace Spec lineup and probably would've still seen play due to how much some decks need to reach those key KO numbers

prime catcher better than computer search by a mile

I remember getting wrecked by Rock Guard Turtinator GX in expanded. But you're right that it was computer search or bust.

Charizard is the most commonly used deck these days...and there's a legitimate divide on whether you play maximum belt vs prime catcher. That alone tells you Ace Specs are better now than before. Variation in play is always better for the health of the game.

I’m just waiting for two years down the line when everyone forgot about Neo upper energy and Pokémon comes out with some super busted stage two dragon Pokémon that needs wacky energy attachments

I really like the diversity of effects from the new ace specs. Powerful enough that it makes sense to be a one of card, but not warping to the point that if you prized it you lost the game (prizing g booster was really annoying).
Also, prime catcher coexisting with counter catcher is really good for the overall state of the game, maybe if it was just prime catcher, a situation similar to computer search would occur, gusting is really powerful

Love that it feels like you could put most of them in any deck and It wouldn't feel bad.. Especially master ball for the weird picks

I definitely believe that Ace Specs are in a much better and much healthier space this time. The power level of all of them feel much more balanced and worthwhile. Neo Upper Energy I feel is a lot closer to the vibe of Rock Guard where there's the off deck that plays it for niche situations, but we don't have anything like Crystal Edge or Master Ball, and we even HAVE Master Ball.
Speaking of Crystal Edge, I was the lone White Kyurem player in my area. I played it in whatever fire deck I was running at the time (legit don't remember) and the 200 was cool, but it was such a cope move.
I feel that part of the problem with the first batch was that Computer Search was the first and best. Everything else had to compete, so none of them really got to shine. But the current format has a lot more compelling reasons to experiment without as clear a winner, and that's fantastic.

I would love to see an Ace Spec Stadium that says “when you play this Stadium, do not discard any other Stadium in play. If that Stadium would be discarded or banished, remove this Stadium instead. When another Stadium would be played, discard it and this card.”
Basically, it can either be a Chaotic Swell, or a protection for another Stadium in play. It can be your own or an opponent’s.

Computer search would just honestly become the only used ace spec except for off meta decks, being able to search for ANYTHING as an item is just insane

      @canttellyousorryaboutthat716 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Mhm. Computer search being an extra 5th copy of every card in your deck is hard to pass up. Dowsing is better than most people thought at the time, but because junk arm was in the format before it, it generally got overlooked. I think in this current format, it really would be computer search, dowsing, some prime catchers, and MAYBE a hero's cape (unlikely)

    *For anyone really bored:*
Hiya. Ol' Otaku here. Actually, probably best if you _don't_ remember me, but as the bulk of this video deals with the Pokémon TCG at times when I was a lot to at least a little "active", I thought I'd weigh in. Yeah, this means I'm daring to disagree with Ross here. *The smart money is that I'm wrong,* but I'll risk posting my take here. Even if I'm not wrong, this is going to be an incredibly longwinded *quibble.* But I don't want to delete what I've written and there's still a tiny, _tiny_ chance that a more nuanced understanding of how the old Ace Specs performed (and why) could be useful in the present.
Dowsing Machine wasn't a distant second place to Computer Search. Yes, Computer Search was the #1 Ace Spec to use in the vast majority of decks, but Dowsing Machine was _almost_ as good in all those decks, and in a few, was better. We're just dealing with two really great cards that - via the Ace Spec mechanic - are mutually exclusive to each other. Computer Search being a _little_ better thus was still enough for it to regularly see play instead of Dowsing Machine.
Scoop Up Cyclone and Scramble Switch weren't as good or as widely played as Computer Search or Dowsing Machine, *but again,* they were _really_ great cards that were useful in most decks and - in a select few - were the better choice. And I'm not talking the select few that folks ran for funsies at League, I mean there were tournaments where Scoop Up Cyclone or Scramble Switch was the Ace Spec and that deck made Top 8 or even won outright. Scoop Up Cyclone was usually run to abuse coming-into-play Abilities, but was also good at Prize denial. Scramble Switch offered a lesser form of Prize denial and wasn't going to help you spam a coming-into-play Ability, but the main point was to act as a one-time insanely potent source of Energy acceleration.
Master Ball and Gold Potion were the budget Ace Specs. They're definitely more tame than the four I've already discussed, but they were still very good. They just weren't "great", but were still well worth playing if you lacked the four previously mentioned Ace Specs. Keep in mind, this also means they were good enough to crowd out running a copy (or another copy of) various potent NON-Ace Spec cards. I don't recall _any_ decks that favored Master Ball to Computer Search, but if you didn't need a different Ace Spec, you absolutely replaced an Ultra Ball with Master Ball. Gold Potion wasn't as obvious, but considering _regular_ Potion under extremely rare circumstances found its way into the odd competitive deck, it shouldn't be a surprise that Gold Potion did as well. A drawback free (other than being your Ace Spec) 90 point healing could essentially undo an opponent's small-to-mid-sized attack. S'possibly the one instance I _barely_ recall Gold Potion being a successful deck's Ace Spec was a one-and-done, but I also recall Gold Potion having been dismissed by most folks (including myself), so even an odd outlier shows what you need to consider with Ace Specs.
*Okay, now for the messy Ace Specs.* G Booster was a certified success, a clutch card in a metagame defining deck, so why didn't I discuss it with the other big successes? G Booster was only worth using in a very specific deck (and its variants. What's more, G Booster is an example of the sum being greater than its individual parts. If you're unfamiliar with the Genesect-EX (and its deck) in question, you'll have to look it up to understand how it could all have whiffed if even one aspect of it was a bit less potent. Then check the other dominant archetypes *and* the counters floating around.
G Booster's more complicated success helps me explain the other Tool Ace Specs, and why they fell short. Life Dew had a generically useful, potent effect; giving up one less Prize is on par with Computer Search and Dowsing Machine _before_ you factor in how Life Dew could be easily bypassed. To begin with, sometimes that denied Prize wouldn't matter. Next, there are multiple, generic ways of forcing your opponent to change out their Active in most of the old Standard and Expanded Formats (dunno about the present). There are usually ways of discarding and/or negating the effects of Tools, or preventing their attachment. Sometimes, there are even solid attackers who can hit the Bench or are focused on alternate win conditions. Even in control/disruption decks, if you're keeping your opponent from attacking/attacking well, Life Dew would be redundant. So only a few hyper-specific decks could make Life Dew shine, though such decks did exist and saw at least limited competitive success.
Rock Guard was similar to Life Dew in most regards. In some ways its effect could matter more often (anytime the equipped Pokémon was damaged by an attack) *but* if the damage counters it placed on that attacker didn't speed up taking KOs, or could be useful for triggering/not-triggering certain other cards' effects, those damage counters wouldn't matter.
*Victory Piece was another oddball.* It saw a tiny bit of competitive success. My memory is hazy, but IIRC correctly it was because Victini-EX - *with* Victory Piece attached - could OHKO a Genesect-EX for no Energy. When circumstances permitted, this could turn around a tight game against that deck, which probably had just used G Booster to slaughter an otherwise healthy, fully powered attacker. There's a very faint possibility that the card's first attack - which provided some Energy acceleration - also benefited, but I might just be remembering one of those "on paper" points that never made a difference in tournaments.
Then we get to Crystal Edge, Crystal Wall, and G Scope. None of these were general attachments; only White Kyruem-EX, Black Kyurem-EX, or Genesect-EX (respectively) could make use of them. You also had to use them instead of more popular non-Ace Spec Tools. All _might_ look like they had potential, at a glance. If Genesect-EX decks didn't have G Booster, you'd still probably want to use Computer Search, Dowsing Machine, or Scramble Switch before relying on G Scope. Maybe even Gold Potion or Master Ball. Yeah, even considering all that lovely Team Plasma support that could combo with G Scope and Genesect-EX. G Scope's attack wasn't bad, it just wasn't good enough.
I don't recall any White Kyurem-EX ever really proving worthwhile, even with a *fat* +50 damage provided by Crystal Edge. At least one Black Kyurem-EX *did* prove worthwhile, but making it tankier by a single turn was nowhere near worth giving up on Computer Search or the other top Ace Specs. Possibly not even worth giving up an instance of Muscle Band (yes, I'm thinking about both Standard and Expanded Formats of the past that used these!).
