    I am making my first attempt at a Winter Garden. I haven't done any gardening in decades. I have high hopes to grow enough for the neighborhood. Oh yeah, I love your videos too.

    Hi Susan, I have had the best success planting carrots around August 1st and harvesting them in the late fall. That way, by the time the roots are starting to form, it is into September, and the weather is starting to cool a bit and they need less water. This is a similar timetable as your corn. Next year, I am going to try growing leeks in the fall also. This year, my early spring planting resulted in pretty nice leeks by June, and I thought I would just let them stay in the ground, but most of them started sprouting side shoots, and the central leek ended up not as big as it might have been.

      @@SusansInTheGarden How did you make your row covers/ tunnel supports with the conduit? I like the idea where you have all the beds set up so you can move them. can you give more specifics please? THANK YOU

      @@larrymorton4357 Hi, Larry. I use different materials for the row cover hoops. Some are from recycled 1/2" drip tubing and some are made with black poly sprinkler pipe. The white PVC uprights that you see on all of our raised beds was for the very purpose you mentioned! We wanted it to be really easy to add hoops and row cover to any of them with a minimal amount of time commitment.

    Hi, I know what you mean about the chipper/shredder jamming. I bought an affordable model off of Amazon. By the second season, it jammed all the time, but I did learn NOT to try to shred vines, even if they were dried up. They always caused a jam for me. BTW, I live in Zone 7B in NJ, and my neighbor leaves her Canna Lillies in the ground all winter. They come back for her in the spring. Thanks for another great video.

      Hi, Pat. Do you mean the house-shaped chicken wire cover? If so, that came from Gardener's Supply: www.gardeners.com/search?q=crop+coop. And yes, it's great for protecting plants from birds and rabbits, etc.

    Great update, Susan...thank you! I appreciate the honesty about the carrots because it helps us all learn. My garden rested this summer but this weekend I'll be planting next year's garlic. It will be wonderful to have my hands back in the soil again. It has been a shock that my carefully stored '21Music garlic saved for seed is still nicely plump and starting to put out rootlets very eager to get in the ground.

    Loved your video! I combat those cabbage butterflies too. In my greenhouse (summer-fall), we suspend shade cloth over the doorways. That way, we can keep the doors open for ventilation and keep those bugs out.

      That has been my method up until now but I had so much debris (plus more to come), that I'm going to need all three bins for a while! I will consolidate them over time because I like that method better. Just needed the space.

I can't wait to see what you will have next year! 🤗🙋Greetings, Judit

    Susan, I don't plant carrots any longer because I think I've only grown them successfully a handful of times over many years of gardening. Now, I usually stick with the tried-and-true veggies that I know will perform well in my garden. Naturally, I have to try some new vegetable varieties each year otherwise gardening wouldn't be as much fun. One of the new things I'll try to grow next year, insert drumroll here, is a rainbow mix of carrots! 🤣😂🤣WHAT? I hope you and Bill have a wonderful week! ~Margie🤗💐🐝🦋

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's funny, Margie! I'm sure you'll do great. And actually, I have to tell you that after the video was finished and uploaded (a.k.a. carved in stone), I came across a few normal carrots so it might not be as bad as I thought! I've been waiting for them to get frosted before harvesting them since that makes the roots sweeter. Fingers crossed. Take care.

  • @daviddeininger2938
    @daviddeininger2938 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Do you think part of the carrots is being in a raised bed versus in ground? Maybe they prefer a ground bed better. I've seen where other TH-cam videos showed potatoes that were in raised beds & some were in the ground. That's why I wondered. Lorraine

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, Lorraine. Well, up until the last 2-3 years, I've been growing carrots successfully in raised beds so I really think it's a watering issue. We water the majority of our crops more than what carrots prefer, yet we have to keep the other crops going. The good news is that after the video was finished, I discovered some decent-looking carrots so maybe they're in better shape than I thought! I don't want to harvest all of them yet because carrots taste sweeter after they've been frosted. We shall see.

    Missed you last week, Susan! Suggestion for the hoop house lettuces vs the birds and bugs: either screen doors and/or use the ag fabric over the bed. I have found the ag fabric that you recommended to be quite effective, so thanks! If screen doors aren't doable, then maybe just child gates in the doorways would deter the birds, or perhaps chicken wire or some other barrier. Sad about your carrots. This year has been my most successful year growing carrots, ever! I wish I could pinpoint what I did differently and why they are doing so well! On a side note, I've lived in Wenatchee for 50 years and only recently learned that we are no longer a zone 5b, we are zone 7a.... as a result of climate change, I guess. Totally changes my perspective on garden possibilities; however, old habits are hard to let go of and be more of a risk taker or adventurous!

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there. Wow, that's quite a switch from 5b to 7a! I suppose we'll be "upgraded" one of these years, too. Anyway, I was in such a hurry in the days before we went out of town that I didn't even think to cover the plants. But they are protected now!

    • @wendyburston3132

      What is ag fabric?

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wendyburston3132 Hi, Wendy. It is called agricultural insect netting or garden insect netting or agricultural mesh. It's a very fine mesh that is also quite durable, and you can use it to protect certain types of crops from damaging insects like aphids and cabbage worms. I did a recent video in which I compared different types of row covers, including the ag netting: th-cam.com/video/uhDRiLX5070/w-d-xo.html. That might help.

    Most of the carrots I have are so tiny, think I'm going to try a lot of different varieties next year and see what works best. I placed then next to my beans. Maybe that was a mistake. Last year the ones I planted in the bed didn't grow but the seeds that fell out of the package on the ground grew very big. This I planted in the ground and, hm, maybe two inches at best. I'm 5a Ontario Canada. Hoping to cover the remaining lettuce and Swiss chard with something what plastic do you recommend for a impromptu greenhouse cover?

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Wendy. 6 mil plastic would be great if you can get your hands on some. Just remember to open the ends of your tunnel on particularly warm, sunny days so it doesn't get too hot under there.
