    I don't know about anyone else but to me this speaks of losing youthful innocence and having to face reality for what it is.

    • @mr_girr3488
      @mr_girr3488 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      thats pretty accurate to the original intent actually, nice. The meaning is the US beginning to lose its innocence during the 50s and 60s as everything from the death of richie valens to the moon landing. And the american public who had to realize how complex the world was, all in a sorta 'coming of age' story

    • @Mr22thou
      @Mr22thou 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree with both of you, DarkpaladinEXE and Mr_Girr. And, the lyrics can communicate on the personal and national levels, and even the humankind level. However, what stands out for me, these days, is the apparent bitterness and maybe even hopelessness at the end of the song, especially from the references to Mick Jagger till the end. Waking from our youthful innocence may be jarring and most of us resist it, however it is a good thing and we'd all be better off if more of us did it. Lastly, as horrific as life often is, there is always wonder, lessons and love. The older I get, the more I accept and the more bitterness and regret I let go of. I'm happier accepting what is and letting go of childhood desires for perpetual fun. That just doesn't work in the real world.

      +noah klein***That's a literal, partial and superficial reading. The imagery, I believe, is specific to someone who was a teen when Buddy Holly, Richie Valenz and The Big Bopper died, on Feb. 3, 1959, and how that teen felt upon reading of it. Then it goes on to describe the music that came afterward, which reflected a real world that wasn't as sweet and innocent as he once imagined.
      Despite the 50's and 60's imagery, the song's meaning is true for everyone and every generation, as we grow up and out of our childhood view of life and the world around us.
      That's my 2 cents worth. Take it or leave it.

    ok so theres a lot of confusion in this comments section for god knows what reason so like half the people down there im gonna say this once. The day the music died is what people actually called February 3, 1959. it was called this because the previous night a plane crash had killed Richie Valens (Born: Richie Valenzuela); The Big Bopper (Jiles Perry Richardson); and Buddy Holly (Charles Holley) while they were on their way to their next destination for the winter tour. while Mclean stated that most of the Lyrics are up for interpretation, due to the all-encompassing nature of the song, and the seemingly never ending 50's-60's pop culture and political references, the widowed bride is confirmed to be Holly's then widowed wife María Elena Holly, who not only blamed herself for his death for multiple reasons, but was pregnant and miscarried a short while after Buddy's death. Also undisputed facts are that Don Mclean was a paper boy at 13, and he first learned about the plane crash by reading the papers he was delivering. Despite the first lyrics, the song does in fact come together to tell the story of how "The Day The Music Died" had permanent effects on Rock 'n Roll.
    with Elvis in the army, Chuck Berry in jail, Jerry Lee lewis married to his 13 year old first cousin once removed, and the recent plane crash, people believed rock was dying. this song tells the story of how people felt and reacted after this crash, using his own experiences to guide the emotion in the song. as the song continues from what me and my history of rock 'n roll teacher gather, each lyric has either a double meaning or reference. with the lyric "singing this'll be the day that i die" possibly being a direct reference to Buddy Holly's hit "That'll be the day".
    This song is not only about the day the music died, but the effects it had on music and on people, along with the political events of the time that shaped the music as much as the music history did. It is not making a profit off others deaths, it is relaying one mans experience and observations over the tragedy of the world itself. with the last verse filled with poetic effects and cliches doubled upon music references.
    "I met a girl who sang the blues, and i asked her for some happy news. she just smiled and turned away"

      Not impossible, but chances are it wont get played a lot. There are other longer songs that were cut down for radio play. It was only after they became popular that they were allowed to play full length. Radio didn't, and still doesn't like songs that are more than about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes long. That doesn't mean there aren't exceptions and this is deservedly an exception

      I too am about the same age...I finished high school in 1974 and I can remember how Vietnam and music stuck in my head as I watched several older friends drafted. It was stange days indeed, one could watch the Vietnam War on TV too. That might have been a good thing in disguise as the news poured over the tv and radio. However watching the news on tv about Vietnam War made it extremely clear to us back home just how cruel, bloody and dreadful war rreally can be! It was so long ago but oh so real and wasteful of a lot of young guys! Just ask their mothers.

      The plane was hired by Buddy Holly, he was gonna fly no matter what. The coin was supposedly flipped by some guy named Tommy (I don't remember who exactly he was) and Ritchie Valens. Although later reports of the present witnesses say there was no coin flipped at all. Waylon Jennings didn't fly because he left his seat to the Big Bopper who was sick.

      That's incredible- I'm in almost exactly the same boat. I moved out of my old neighborhood this year, and had to leave behind all the friends I've had since I was really young. Though I never grew up in the 60's and never experienced any of the things Don McLean sings about, this song expresses exactly how I feel: Sad to have to leave my friends behind and move on to the rest of my life, but also extremely grateful that I was able to make so many great memories with them. It's a truly bittersweet feeling, and American Pie encapsulates it perfectly. I hope you end up feeling better about leaving your friends, and that you have a fantastic day as well!

    Picture this: your driving home from a baseball game, 3 hours away from your house. The time? 11:23 pm. Your dad pulls over to get gas at some random gas station. While there you get a soda and some licorice. When you get back in the car this song is playing. You and your dad jam out to this. He cranks it up all the way, while he goes 90 down the highway. For me these are the times I want to remember with my father. Love you pops ❤️
    edit: thank you for all the love, this song came on the radio the other day as i was going down the SAME highway, what did i do? bet your a$$ i cranked it up and ran 90 down that highway.

    This song has a special place in my heart. It was on one of my old music CD's and was once on my Dad's iPod. Perhaps most fittingly, I heard this song on the radio on April 29th, 2018. The words were never much truer as the "retro" music station I heard the song on died on May 26th, less than a full month later, only to be replaced by a radio station that plays songs from 1999-present, which were much worse than the 1971-1999 music played by the station that came before it. It perhaps isn't a coincidence that one of the last songs they played is about "the day the music died"

    I went to my estranged father's funeral, only to learn , via the tributes , he spent more time dishing out fatherly advice to Cousins I hardly knew, than his own children. I wasn't bitter though. I went thru a ceremony for a deceased Vietnam veteran, and I had no sorrow at all. How can you miss or mourn what you never had?

    By far the one of best songs during this time period. However, the most analyzed , many obvious references, such as the deaths of the young singers, the Beatles , Elvis, Bob Dylan. But other lyrics that even Don, who is still alive, doesn’t recall the meaning as he wrote while high.
    I see the beauty in the lyrics, melody, and the spirit of America.

    • @HopeGardner3amed
      @HopeGardner3amed 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Even if it is not about America itself, it is about American music fads in 50s/60s/70s and how they influenced history which is what makes it so timeless. The reminder that art and media influence history and society is often forgotten by our education system, but is always true.

      This song is a masterpiece. But Madonna’s version is overrated af. Madonna took this song, replaced the guitar and the drums with music completely created by a computer. She used auto tune and she still doesn’t sound as good as Don. Madonna cut all of the song that made it great, and danced around like a slut. The day the release of Madonna’s cover was the day the music died.

      marley cummins I wouldn't exactly call myself a mod but the symbol has been passed down generations from the first mods. Bands like Oasis, casual fashion etc had a huge impact on the supporter culture which evolved at my local football club during the 90's and 00's. I want to keep that tradition alive and I'm using the symbol for purposes of association.

    There are so many people in the comments asking what this song is about. Ok, here we go, time for a history lesson. But before we start let me state that this is a highly ambivalent song: There are many lyrics that could refer to different things and this is supposed to be this way. But lets get started: This song is mainly about two things: The death of three famous rock and roll musicians on 3rd of February 1953("The day the music died") including Buddy Holly ("Them good old boys"; "The father, son and the holy ghost") and the changes in society and music industry in the fifties and sixties: Bob Dylan, The Beatles and MIck Jagger are not described positivly in this song. Dylan who turned his back on the social movements of this time("moss grows fast on a rolling stone") is the "Jester" who stole the crown from Elvis Presley (The king) while Mick Jagger is the "Satan". There are way to many allusions to explain here ("then we were all in one place"=woodstock;"the girl who sang the blues"=janis joplin etc.) but I want to show you to special parts of the song: The intro and the refrain. The intro is mostly about Don McLean´s understandig of music: It is supposed to make you smile and bring you to dance. It is about being happy. This is completly contrasted with "the sad news on the doorstep" (McLean delieverd papers at this time) and it seems that he could not "take one more step"..but after "ten years on our own" he found his way back to his old meaning of music. And this is were the refrain comes into our discussion: In such a sad song about such a sad topic the title and the refrain are a joke: A play with words that is supposed to make you smile. "Miss American Pie" does not make any sense... it is the silly combination from the winner of a beauty price with american pie; and a cake and a beauty price do not fit together at all...it is supposed to make you smile even though the whole song is so sad. And this is the brilliance of the Song.
    Sidestory: "this will be the day (that i die)" was a song from buddy holly.He and the other two musicians who died with him, were on tour together and on the evening of their death, they were singing this song. This is one of these stories only life can write I guess.
    Ok I hope that I maybe could clear up some things. If anything is hard to understand or grammatically wrong I ask for forgiveness; I am no native speaker and describing such difficult things in a foreign language is not that easy.
