I was playing along (I'd forgotten this iteration of Masquerade Party existed, but in watching The Odd Couple and Oscar was watching it). I was trying to think who could the judge be. Never in a million years would I guess. He did a terrific job.
The last Masquerade Party I remember seeing was an episode with Morey Amsterdam dressed as the Dutch Boy plugging a leak in a stone wall. One of my favorite game shows as a kid.
Monty Hall acquired the rights to produce a new syndicated version of this show (who better to produce it?) in the fall of 1974. Even though this lasted just one season, Dawson proved he could successfully host any game show [even though his only other stint as an emcee was a local 1969-'70 Los Angeles series, "LUCKY PAIR"]. When "FAMILY FEUD" was proposed two years later, he was ready....
Originally Mark Goodson was considering Jack Narz for FF, but Richard’s contract with GT allowed him first crack at a GT pilot of his choosing. He chose FF and the rest is history.
I remember seeing a photo of Richard and he's standing in front of a large sign that reads "Manual Dexterity" and it's clearly on the set of a game show but I can't find ANYTHING about it. He satirized game show hosts in the movie "The Running Man" but the game in that movie wasn't called Manual Dexterity. This one that I'm curious about happened to be a real game show.
Officially it is. I say "officially" because in 1988, he taped a pilot for a revival of "You Bet Your Life", a show originally made famous by Groucho Marx for over a decade.
@coolwafferman During that run, there was a special episode broadcast on NBC, ABC, CBS simultaneously. One of the guests on that show was then Vice President, and future President, Richard Nixon.
Took me a long time-- Allen does a great job! Finally was able to discern that voice. Crazy to see him throwing books everywhere!
the makeup skills back in the day were so much better than they are today
I remember reading where Betty White was on this show and someone recognized her as she entered the stage.
I wish I could find this full episode I just learned about this show and would love to see more
He was always seen as more of a host than actor. Even his wife said that. But he was able to play a character here.
Nipsey Russell was always a sharp game show player.

What is cool is that this very had Betty White is disguise.

Barry I. Grauman the show was produced by Bob Barker of all people.
@@jwgreek8606 he alluded to it later too on Tattletales Bob did when he and Richard were on it together.

Outstanding clip! Thanks for posting. Would love to see more of this version of Masquerade Party.
I was born 1 year and 2 days after the original airdate of this episode.
Is this the only game show Richard Dawson outside Family Feud?

Dan Barker No, he actually hosted a game shows produced by Bob Barker in the late 60’s called “Lucky Pair.”
Can you please post more episodes during Dawson's run at Masquerade Party?? Thank you!!
That's the show I do remember and I lived it. Are there full episodes available.
"it's possible, but not"
lol.
I already know that the disguise was supposed to provide a clue, but what was the clue in this case?
Alan was "passing words". He hosted the gameshow "Password" for about 20 years.
I know that he hosted password.
I saw a full version of the episode on Facebook where they explain it: "Most judges pass sentences, but our judge passes words."
Good make-up on Mr. Ludden. I would have sworn it was Dustin Hoffman.
What a geek!
wait, in response to lee's last question, were there any particularly famous referees or officials at that time?
@coolwafferman It was previously on during a good portion of the 50s.

Don't read the comments first, someone has loose lips
oh, crap, i should've known that she didn't mean referees.
LOL @ 2:55!
