WOW! I never heard of this! I was 19 when this was going on and just starting out in my adult life. If ever a man deserved to be recognized (albeit posthumously) this is he! Unbelievable how one man went with his gut rather than the data in front of him and had the intelligence and daring to go against his orders. Thank you Stanislav! I hope they are treating you better up there than we did down here.

You typically could start a nuclear war with ONE missile, carrying an ERW (Enhanced Radiation Warhead) which after detonation in the stratosphere creates a NEMP (Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse) which damages all electronics and power lines, which are not specially shielded, over a vast area - effectively blinding and confusing the target before the main strike which can come much later. Therefore, one single rocket launch can very well be acted upon with a full scale retaliatory strike.
Google 'Black Brant Scare 95' and you'll see what is considered to be the closest call ever to a WWIII scenario. And pay special attention to that this happened long after 'the cold war' was considered to 'be over'.

5 ICBM, in 1983 they would have been Trident I or Minuteman III, they would have been able to deliver up to 40 100kT(Trident I) or 15 300 kT(Minuteman III) warheads. That is enough to flatten every major soviet City and would have, due to the lack of warning, have killed most of the chain of command.
It does not matter that he saved the world. He disobeyed direct orders, he put all of the lives at risk.
Just assuming that only 5 ICBM would be not too bad is just wrong. Just 5 can destroy a country.

Have you heard of Vasili Arkhipov? He did the same thing, years earlier, during the Cuban missile crisis. He was in a submarine that had lost connection to the outside world, and didn’t know if there had been a strike or not, and decided not to do anything

If the story could have ever been proven, my instinctive reaction is: "You engaged in warfare over a software bug?!" It's outrageous and absurd, and is grounds for a citizen-coordinated general strike/revolt for all countries involved. The hypothetical would have represented the epitome of human stupidity.

Any launch by either the the USA or USSR would automatically trigger launches by all other nuclear countries on both sides and pretty much obliterate the entire world except Antarctica. This situation occurred in the Cold War. I was pointing out Cold War targeting scenarios. The number of ICBMs have all but been eliminated from their Cold War abundance.
I was an officer in the early eighties in U.S. Navy Special Warfare and I can tell you that in the Cold War, fall-out would not have been much of an issue because nearly every populated area in the world was directly targeted. Let me emphasize; Directly targeted. That Soviet Lieutenant saved the world.
He lived his later years and died in Fryazino, 50km from Moscow. We are definitely not a Moscow suburb. Our town is 450 years old and is a radio-electronics production/research hub.

I did know about Vasili Arkhipov though, a Soviet submarine officer who refused to launch nukes at U.S. forces during their failed invasion of Cuba in 1963. Two other officers on the sub were in favor of nuking the Americans, but it took three to approve it, and Arkhipov refused. Two nuclear bullets dodged thanks to two brave Soviets. I wonder if there are similar stories from the Western side, buried deep in NORAD and still stamped "Top Secret?" Probably...

That's not bad code. It's an insufficiently designed filter. It's the math behind the filter and the fidelity of the code representing that particular design. Either aspect or both could have been incorrect.

You should do a video on Arkhipov. Having read about both of the incidents, I believe Arkhipov's situation was a far closer call, and far more dependent on his own judgement.

@@eskanderx1027 he was an officer in a Russian submarine that could launch nuclear warheads at the US. The submarine was being harassed by a US ship with depth charges. However those in the submarine thought they were under attack. A nuclear launch was planned which required 3 officers to agree, 2 officers signed off on it but he didn't. It prevented the launch of nuclear warheads during the Cuban missile crisis

I really wish things like those would be taught and discussed.
I always found it fascinating that there are some videos on the internet that manage to capture your attention like this (be it because of the production, storytelling etc), each standing out in its own way, regardless if it was made by a smaller or a bigger creator or team, regardless of a subject that you may or not may be familiar with, and it’s genre (cars, music, history, geography, gaming you name it).
For me, this video definitely goes into that category.

Remember reading his story in the paper for the first time around year 2000. Think the correspondent did an interview with him as well. One of the best stories from the Cold War.
