I completely agree; I have approximately $650k in external retirement funds. I am debt free and have very little money in retirement funds compared to the total value of my portfolio over the past three years. To be honest, the Fin-advisor can only be neglected, not rejected. Just do your due diligence to identify a fiduciary one.

There are a lot of strategies to make tongue-wetting profit that the average joes don't know. . Personally, the financial-market for me seems the only way forward with my long time horizon (accrued roughly $457k in gains since Mid 2021 ) but if you don’t have that fortune of time it’s a tough market out there almost nowhere feels safe!

Devin, thanks for always giving us helpful information to navigate Social Security and get our best benefits. I just got off the phone, after waiting 2 hours on hold I might add, to make an appointment to apply for widow's benefits on my husband's earnings. The representative tried to convince me that I will have to choose between my earnings or my husband's because I am 66. I told her 3 times- no, I'm not applying for spousal benefits or my own. I want widow's benefits, Form SSA-10. She finally put me on hold and went and asked somebody. She said I am right. After age 66, it doesn't matter how much I earn. I can file for widow's benefits. And then at age 70, I will file for my own. It pays to educate yourself by listening to people like you!

Devon, in you linked article you mentioned bank account protection. I have a friend over 65 living entirely on her SSDI payment. She had been previously advised to transfer some of this income into other (same bank) accounts she and her husband had at the time of his death. So she does this in small amounts monthly. Are these other accounts protected too since all the deposit into the main account appears to be protected? Or does this practice need to stop? Thanks.

Devin, What is this ‘restriction’ to leave out my benefit when filing for survivors benefits? I went to my local SS office this last Friday to file but, was told that dept. was short handed so I will be called Feb. 3rd to complete the filing. How do I make sure I don’t lose my own benefits should I file after 70 if I would get a higher amount?

Excellent video. Background--I am the older spouse. Married more than 10 years. Neither of us has reached FRA or filed for benefits. Spouse will receive substantially more than me at FRA. Spouse recently passed away. Possible strategy-I file for MY benefit when I turn 65 (and am eligible for Medicare) and then switch to survivor benefit when I reach my FRA. Question-Is this the best strategy? And how does FRA for survivor benefits differ from FRA? And-is there anything else I should consider? Thank You!

Great video!! Question..my wife was on disability when she passed in 2018. I am 61 and still working. Plan to retire at 62 at which time I will apply for her survivor benefits. I will draw her survivor's benefit until I reach 70. Will I get 71.5 % of her SS before she started receiving disability or 71.5% of her disability amount which is considerably higher?

  • @lindad6223
    @lindad6223 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm understanding the reduced benefit set at 82.5% of FRA when your late spouse began benefits at 62 - and the surviving spouse claim is at it's maximum at roughly 62.5, depending on birth year, when your reduction is 17.5%.
I'm understanding the 100% of FRA when those benefits began at or after FRA. This is when the surviving spouse claims at their FRA.
    What about the missing middle?
My late spouse claimed about 9 months prior to FRA. Roughly 6% reduction. Am I right in presuming that when my reduction is that 6%, my survivor's benefit is at it's max? Somewhere between 62.5 ish and FRA, matching the actual reduction that the late spouse received?

Enjoyed the video and learned a lot. But I have a question about the calculations shown mid-way through (for calculating the monthly reduction %). In step 3, do you divide the number of months (from step 2) by 28.5% or do you divide 28.5% by the number of months? The later method would come up with % reduction per month which is what I think you want.

They know the 1st is dying. They file for divorce on #2 so they can qualify for SS based on #1 survivor benefit rate. I don’t ask if f their plan worked so will ask you. Does it work? Oh and 2 told me they plan to remarry #2 after they go thru the process.

Devin, the typical case is that the wife takes her own benefit at age 62 and her husband takes his at FRA. Her own benefit is more than a spousal benefit. Now years later they are both past FRA and If he then passes away first, my understanding is she will receive his full benefit as long as it is greater than her own benefit. Is this correct?

Thank you very much for this info. I became a widow at 58, my husband was 68 when he died. He collected SS at 62 and I put it all in the bank because he collected a pension. I work full time for health benefits so I put off collecting my widows benefits until I reach my FRA which is 66 1/2 so I can still work full time up to the SS limit. When I do collect my SS I will collect on the survivors benefits only because my husband was getting way more than I would on SS. His 80% because of early collecting is still more than mine would be at 100%. Please tell me if I am correct or not, and feel free to correct me. Thank you. :)

Just like the IRS tax code.... and just like the small business PPP and EIDL grant/loan rules....is there ANY govt program that is not INCREDIBLY ( and maybe "needlessly" ) complex?...... can't this be simplified to only a handfull of rules?. I am a first-generation American and all my European relatives have all manner of "programs" they are involved with.....and they would fall over in a dead faint if they saw this.....

    I have some questions.
I was married for 27 years my wife was 18 years older than me. When she passed away she was on disability. She was 69 when she passed. I was 51 years old when she passed. I was diagnosed with ALS 2 years ago. I'm on disability now. So can I get my wife's benefits now? I'm 55 now.

Scott Chastain If you are disabled before age 60 you can get your wife's SSDI now. Talk to Social security about your survivors benefits. If hers was a higher amount than what your getting now then they will give you hers. As long as you haven't remarried.

You must ensure you request a RESTRICTION to leave out either your survivor or your record benefit before adjudication of the benefit. If not , all eligible benefits related to your SS number will be included and you will forgo your ability to file for a survivor and then later file for your own . Extremely important!

A married couple are both receiving social security retirement benefits and one of them dies. Is the survivor entitled to receive any of the benefits the deceased spouse received?
If social security did not exist, they could have put the money away for themselves, but the government took it from them. If they had not been forced to give it to social security, the couple would have it available to them, and if one dies, the survivor would have it all.

I collected both my SSDI was figured on my own earnings. After I was awarded my SSDI , the gave me a per cent age of my deceased ex spouse benefits. When I turned 65 last November. At that time, I had to relinquish MY SSDI but switch to full spousal benefits which was about 500.00 more

My husband died at age 42 - he had been on disability for about 7 yrs prior to his death.
He was previously married for 10yrs and had 3 children with her, they are all adults now.
We were married 9 yrs and 10 months and he adopted my son, who is also an adult now.
How do I know if I can claim the survivor social security benefits and when would it be best? I am currently 50yrs old.
